This thread is for looking ahead to the draft and the offseason - what positions are our biggest weaknesses?

I know we need a DE, FS/CB (depending on what Lowery's permanent position will be), ILB, RG, red zone threat/big WR, P, K?, and NT depth.

If you had to rate them in order what would it be?

    For me:
    1) FS/CB
    2) ILB
    3) DE
    4) RG
    5) red zone/big WR
    6) NT depth
    7) P
    8) K

Why does everyone hate Brandon Moore so much?

I forgot about QB that should've been on my list.

Do we even know what we have with Ratliff or has he just done well against scrubs in preseason?

People assume he sucks because we didn't spend a first round pick/tens of millions of dollars in free agency on him.

Well, while not a staunch jets fan...

    1. RG - If he can't pass protect for a QB that is good at avoiding the rush, no idea how he is going to pass block for a young guy.
    2. FS - You just need a guy that can be consistent back there.
    3. NT Depth - If you lose Jenkins right now, the entire run defense goes out the window. You need to be able to have a OK replacement, and you don't.
    4. P/K - Neither are overly impressive.

Somehwere, QB depth too. I don't know if it's a major concern, because the jets may be able to convince favre for one more season. I guarentee if the jets even SNIFF the playoffs, favre will be back. He'll want to end his career in the post season where he belongs. The jets CAN get there still this season, but I have pretty good hopes he will be back. He wont learn this whole system this year, finalyl get comfortable with it in the last 4 weeks, just to not go one more.

Uh, there are other needs too, but all teams have them.

Start with a real head coach, creative OC and fiery DC. Before that is fixed, NOTHING will matter.

NT Depth. In the 3-4 defense it's the critical position. You've seen what happens when Jenkins has to come out-- the D pretty much collapses with Pouha in there. I'd say the Jets need to secure another solid NT even if it means taking cap space from some other position.

Agressive/Talented and fired up coaching staff.....

Agressive/Talented and fired up coaching staff.....
This is ridiculous. This team is never prepared to play, not even against the worst teams in the league. The playcalling is the worst I've seen since the draw on 3rd and long. Hell, CHAD PENNINGTON threw for 300 , Sorry, I've seen enough. This team needs a new coach and a new direction.

    Bill Cowher?
    Mike Nolan?

Free Safety and slot CB are my No.1 and No. 2 needs respectively.

We don't seem to have an answer on the roster for either position.

    +1

The defense only works when Jenkins is on the field. With a capable backup or (dreaming here) an equal talent to split time, the defense could become very good at all times, not just when Jenkins is out there.

After that, offensive line. Everything else is icing on the cake and if the cake collapses the icing just looks a mess.

I feel like we lack depth just about everywhere except OLB. We keep trading away mid-round draft picks that could have been used to build depth at different positions. I feel that is a big reason why we're thin. Next year we are likely to lose another 3rd rounder (If Favre keeps starting).

Out of these head coaches available...which one of them runs/ran a 3-4 defense, and was most successful at it? I don't think any of them really do. Didn't/Doesn't Pittsburgh run a form of 4-3/Cover 2 hybrid of some sort? (not sure) Or will we spend another 2-3 years cleaning house again to bring in 4-3 players to fit the new defensive mold?

Actually they all run/ran a form of the 3-4 with the exception of Holmgren.

I'd say defensive line depth is our biggest need. They're playing pretty well now, but all of our starters are pretty old, and and behind them we don't really have much.
