Today I can't say I'm surprised the Jets lost this game. Since I've become a Jets fan in 1981, this has happened over and over again. Bottom line: We always seem to lose the key games we should and need to win. One game this game reminded me of the December 15, 1991 loss to the Patriots by a score of 6-3. We could have clinched a playoff spot if we won (IRRC). Crap team (pats finished 5-11), a game we should win at home, and we blow it. I remember the Star-Ledger had a headline "Pats make Jets their Patsies" or something similar. We snuck into the playoffs the next week in Miami, but honestly, we always blow these games. Inferior opponent, game we "should" and "need to win" and we lose. Feel free to add your own game to the list.
Cleveland game from a few years ago. Team played poorly for pretty much the whole game but then rallied at the end and were driving for the tying TD. A would-be TD pass to Baker was called back because they said he was out of bounds. Replays showed that he was forced out and his feet clearly would have been in bounds. You are right that we always blow these type of games. I've become a bit numb to losses like this but I have to admit yesterday's still hurt a little bit.
The 2000 loss to Detroit. Only difference to me was that if we won the Detroit game we were going to go to the playoffs. It's too soon for that now.
Yeah, the image from yesterday's game that I can't get rid of is Baker falling helplessly to the turf as Favre's pass sailed incomplete. Baker had NOBODY within about 5 yards of him and probably would have run to well within FG range.
Definitely FG range, maybe a TD. I thought Brad Smith might break that one on the FG drive at the end of regulation. The Cleveland game is a good comparison, road AFC game, similar time of the season. Not a season killer but one that could either be costly or still overcome.
yeah, this was definitely like the Cleveland game from 06. A piss poor opponent, on the road........ugly perfiormance, right down to the ugly green pants too. Also, it was relatively early in the season, with time to bounce back.....which they did nicely that year...let's hope we have a repeat of that bounce back I hate to sound like someone that didn't put their money where their mouth was........but I knew they were going to lose this game. I suppose like the original poster of this thread was getting at........there's at least one game each season like this. In typical Jet fashion, they'll offset this bad loss with an improbable win..like at Buffalo (hopefully)
Definitely the Bears game in 2002, such high hopes going in, only to see a mediocre, play down to the opponent type of game. The last two weeks of this season erased this game, but I still remember the awful feeling when this one was over. After this game I just kept telling myself, no matter what, don't get too high on this team, cause they will just break you. I still haven't taken my own advice. Bonus points for a huge rushing day from Curtis. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/scores102/102349/20021215NFL--CHICAGO---0.htm
That was a sloppy game all around. There was the fight during practice that week that really got it started well. Then the holding penalty on the 2nd half opening kick off negating a Chad Morton KOR for a TD. Then as we were marching down the field Chrebet's courageous yet bonehead play of trying to leap over a defender then fumbling the ball. ugh.
I watched that game in Chicago with some friends there, we still laugh about that Chrebet play. The original plan was to go to the game but we didn't feel like driving down to Champagne, it's like 3 hours.
I was never as mad as I was after that game. After battling to get back into the playoff race only to lose to the TERRIBLE Bears team...But it happens every year. This thread could get filled with these types of games really quickly.
Probably, once junc sees it. I think the fact that we managed to beat New England and Green Bay and still win the division is why I can laugh about that game now.
That's right, I forgot about that--on a Saturday, right? Then the final week they lost to the Pats in OT, blowing a lead. Man, they really spit that one up, didn't they? Like football's Mets.
I'll never forget Gary Andersons field goal to beat the fish that year. He was like 43 years old, had no power in his leg at all, and somehow drives this wobbly duck 53 yards on a line through the uprights. Ugliest field goal ever. It barely got off the ground and I don't know how it even cleared the line of scrimmage without being blocked.
