    Meet the real American Idol
By MARK CRAIG, Minneapolis Star Tribune

The Jets have 24 players who are 25 or younger. That means 45.3 percent of their roster was in second grade or younger when Brett Favre broke into the NFL in 1991.

So you can imagine what it was like when the Jets traded for Favre this offseason. Sort of like watching the T-Rex come to life and follow you home from the museum.

"There's an element of awe," said Jets coach Eric Mangini, "especially for some of the young guys that have been playing Madden with him for years."

Favre is coming off a career-high six touchdown passes in a 56-35 victory over the Cardinals. He's led the Jets into their bye with a 2-2 record a year after they went 4-12. He also leads the league in touchdown passes (12) and passer rating (110.8), and would have to be considered the league MVP front-runner through the first quarter of the season.

Apparently, he's also becoming just one of the guys in the Jets locker room.

"You just try to keep guys from asking for an autograph early on," Mangini joked. "But now he's just part of the group."

So, who's bigger in NY right now, Favre or Eli?

Unfortunalely the giaints are more popular in NYC because they have been around a lot longer then the Jets. Yet Brett is very popular. If he wins a SB, he would temporarily replace Eli at the top. If no SB, he will always be #2 to Eli in the minds of most neutral and giaints fans. They have the majority and we have to face facts unfortunately.

Peyton may have more notoriety, but Eli doesn't come close.

Now if Strahan was still around, that would be a media dream having them both in the same city.

    Eli loses.

Brett's pretty popular and besides Giants fan most people don't really care for Eli. Even some Giants fans don't care much for Eli, in spite of being way more popular after the super bowl. But other than those Giants fans, pretty much an Jets fan or non-Giants fan would prefer a Favre poster on their wall.

that is true that a lot of giants fans dont like eli. my grandfather, and step dad are both huge giants fans. neither one likes eli even after the superbowl win. none of the other people i hear them speak about the giants with like eli either. i almost got the sense from my grandfather a few weeks after the superbowl win that it was a little disappointing for him to not be able to hate on eli so much. favre is more popular than eli, but the giants still have the larger fan base.

No surprise I'm a Favre backer but give Eli credit he stepped up last February and I will always appreciate what he did. If the Jets go farther as a team or Favre takes the MVP he tops Eli in 08' IMO.

Eli gets too much credit for what he did last year. He managed games well but he never had to win it by himself. In fact, their defense outplayed their offense. And the running game was really the biggest weapon on their offense. Really their weakest link was their passing game.

In NY, I think Eli still has the edge. Mostly because he just won a superbowl, and his team is undefeated.

Outside of NY? No question - Favre is more popular then Eli.

Except of course, in the Super bowl. You know, where he lead the game winning drive capped by a TD pass.

Your right, he never had to WIN games for the most part, but when he had to in the biggest game of his life, he came through. He deserves credit for that.

He came through obviously but it was still the defense that held the record-setting New England Offense to only 14 points. How many points was New England averaging per game again?

C'mon the real MVP of that game was the D-Line. Anyone with any football insight of their own should know that.

    19/34 255 yds 2TD 1INT

Are those really super bowl MVP numbers? Also, the Giants doubled the amount of rushing yards that New England had.

Well, they were for Peyton Manning, who also had a fumbled handoff (that was his fault, not the RB).

Regardless, holding the Patriots to only 14 pts is far more impressing than Mannings 2TDs and 1INT

It's unfair to compare - Eli never had the weapons peyton has had his entire career. I will say however, it is ironic it took Eli just a few season to get a SB with a offense worse then what Peyton has had his entire career.

So, who knows? Maybe ELI IS BETTER THEN PEYTON. It's not so far fetched, if you really take a step back. How much of Peyton is the product of the offense around him, and how much of it is him? No one really knows, because that offense around him has never really changed. Favre has rarely had the same two wr's on the field every year. Same with Brady, among many others. I have yet to see how much Peyton really can play as he hasn't had to deal with different personel his entire career.

Fair enough. But Eli will have to continue to prove that he's an elite QB and if Peyton continues like he has been this year then maybe you're right. Right now we don't know.

All I know is this: Everyone was giving Peyton a free pass when he played bad this year due to personel.

Sorry, you play with what you have. If your truly great, you can make it work in some fashion. It wont always be pretty, but it has to be effective.

First time he had to deal with it,a nd it wasn't good. Heck, even with all the weapons, he didn't look good today. Unfortunatly, they played the texans.

    Talk about chokers.
