Did anyone watch this kid play football in college. There is nothing phoney about his game. He has everything it takes to be a winning QB in this league and if he is there at 4, it would be the best thing that has happened to the Jets since Namath's gaurantee.
I agree with Vision. He's an excellent prospect who has the savvy to handle the bigtime media, and the tools to be an excellent NFL QB. Taking him at #4 is really a no-brainer, provided the CS believes that Pennington has had it.
I really don't know why, man, but every quote of his I read has sort of a snide twist to it's syntax, or maybe I'm just having some random paranoid attack come from nowhere, because I have no reasons to be down on him from a technical standpoint. I also don't buy into the theory that his success was created solely by his surrounding talent. It's a personality thing.
the last thing you said...no truer words have been spoken around here for a long time my friend...many a night as i sit around playing with my 2-year old i wonder if id be happier sitting at a bar...and on the rare occasion i go to a bar,i cant wait to get home and play with my two year old...i feel like peter brady when his voive was changing.."when its time for chaieiaiieinge"
honestly how would you address the media if you're the best qb in the draft and your being doubted the most? i certainly wouldn't like it, and that little chip on his shoulder that he displays during interviews is also a great thing to have if he's going to lead your team. Honestly, the article made me want to go get him even more.
This article doesn't change my mind either way. It just reinforces the way I feel on both sides of the fence with him. Being obessed with the spotlight doesn't necessarily mean he won't be a great football player. Look at LeBron James. The kid is absolutely pheonominal, and he openly stated that he wants to be the king of the media. Then again, is the attitude of being obessed with the spotlight going to hurt him? Let's just say the Jets draft him at 4, or even worse, trade up for him. The spotlight is going to glare on him. What happens if he gets his chance and flops for two or three games? All of a sudden the "media darling" is getting trashed by fans and media alike. How does he handle the fizzled star? Is he then a poised and composed young man? Or is he suddenly Ryan Leaf? QB is the biggest crapshoot in the draft. Can Matt be a super star pro-bowl Super Bowl winner? Sure. Could he also be a big time flop? Absolutely. I still would rather skip on him. Take Super Mario, or trade down to grab a first rounder next year. I'm still stuck on Quinn next year if Penny and Ramsey flop. Or go after Croyle later. I would rather a 3rd rounder flops than a guy who is getting millions without touching a snap. If I want sexy, I'll grab a Playboy. When I watch football I want to see men who like to eat babies! (J/K, credit to Mike Tyson for the paraphrased quote!)
NO way do they pick Leinart. The media is trying to sell him big time. I feel the Jets are not sold on him for many reasons. Plus his mindset is not what Mangini is looking for. He is running his mouth already and he has too many distractions going on. Even Brian Billick said so. Besides his arm is still a question mark especially to play on the Eastcoast. Leinart will be a decent Qb not a franchise player. Dont expect to see him in green.
I don't expect him in green and white either, but if he somehow falls to our pick...we are taking him.
I dont want Leinart, and this comparision is absurd. IF there is a QB in this draft that could possibly hold Joe's jock in all aspects, it would be Vince Young. He has the chance to be tremendous, a black winning QB in NY, and he has the arm, legs, and athleticism that Joe had. All that said, even that is a stretch in my mind. I dont want a QB at 4, but I really question Leinart's NFL transition. I want Mario, Hawk, Brick, Ngata. The whole concept of a franchise QB i think is a joke. All that means is they are paid way to much and get to much focus. In a salary cap game, Franchise QBs are cap busters.
The spotlight tends to ruin more careers than it makes. Very few athletes function real well in the spotlight, although some thrive on it. You'd better want to thrive on it and you'd also better know you can perform well under it before you ever get out on the dance floor. Few who think they can take the heat actually can. Athletes like TO, for example, thrive on the attention and in fact, do well under the spotlight. It's almost as if when they don't have it, they don't perform as well. When they have it, and especially if they help create it even, they do especially well. John McEnroe in tennis was another personality who played much, much better when he had the spotlight. Joe Namath created his own spotlight, then fed it even... even dared the media to step up the lumens... and still knew enough about himself to know that he could go out and boast that he'd pull off SB III when everyone was saying, "No way" and still actually go out there and do it on game day! But most others who find themselves in the spotlight don't do well at all. Some who get there in fact think they'll be fine with it and welcome it and tell themselves they've got the resolve to perform well in spite of it. But the truth is, most of these guys find out the pressure is far more enormous than they had ever envisioned. I'm just concerned that Leinart finds himself engulfed in something the size of which he has no clue. If it gets in his head to such an extent that he really believes he's Superman, he gets drafted and gets a huge contract, sure. Then gets out on the field and goes 1-4 at the start of the season and his entire world collapses because he thought he could walk the walk despite the spotlight, only to find out he was wrong about himself. It can cause years of damage to morale, confidence, self-esteem, etc. Meanwhile you've got this clown on your hands with a huge contract at your expense, looking for all the world like he might be the NFL's next big bust.
Sorry to disagree with you but they will trade him or the pick and get three picks for him or the spot.
dawg stop dreaming.. the jets are gonna need a partnet to trade down. what team is gonna give up 3 1st day picks in this draft to move up?
It doesnt have to be 3 ist day picks. Look at what the Giants gave up for Eli. You get a 2nd and 3rd or 4th for this year and a 1st or second for next year.
I really dont think they like him for many reasons. We will see what happens. Anyway the Titans will probably take him anyway.
I'd rather take D'Brick, Cutler or Vince Young. Leinart has made alarm bells go off in my head for about a year now. I also find it either disturbing or amusing that Cimini thinks Leinart is good looking. He mentioned it repeatedly in the article. Uh, first off, why is he judging other men's looks, secondly, what does it matter? We want a QB, not a model. I don't get it.
but its ok when hes portrayed as the next Namath? its just the fact NY is one of the biggest media cities in the world and theres no bigger stage in sports itself except the olympics. the point is, these players are supposed to be humbled by the pro experience. his media exposure and life off the field would lead some to argue he is "NFL" ready then. the people who criticize the article are no more biased than anyone who would let these press releases convince them matt leinart is a better fit for this team than any other player. let alone comparing him to a legend just cause he's developed a persona before even being drafted
