Ferguson or Williams or even Hawk would fit any one of our needs. They will alll be good players. Guess what, considering Mangini is from the Parcells/Belicheck school the all prefer linebackers to play major roles.
I think it's easier to make a choice in the top 5 than it is to make good choices in the middle rounds. Finding good value deep into the draft is a skill reserved for very few, and therefore I think those are tougher picks. Also, if you think about the top 5 picks, everybody has a consensus on who they are, so it's really not that tough.
D'Brickashaw Ferguson OT Virginia 12 33.33% Mario Williams DE N.C State 24 66.67% That's what I thought.... I wondered why I kept reading about how close it was..
This is not about what the fans want. Thye have a plan and we have to trust that they will build a good team. So no matter who they pick we have to support them.
I picked D'Brick because that is the bigger need on our team, but I don't think he will be there at 4 and I will have no problem with Mario Williams on the Jets. Firstly he is one hell of a prospect and Secondly, how cool is it to have a guy called Super Mario on the team. Especially in green, he is like Mario and Luigi put into one body, THE ULTIMATE MAN!!!!
I voted for Mario Williams. The mock draft in my signature explains why. We have the ability to draft a beast at DE, and a guy that many people are comparing to Julius Peppers. He would instantly make our Defense THAT much better. And on top of it all, we use our next two picks on very good OL prospects. If we begin next season with the following OL, I would be very happy. Jones - Kendall - Mangold - Moore - McNeill
UMMM, You are 100% TRUE and CORRECT... Now, there's no reason not to see who the Fans want... What does one have to do with the other? They're both great players.
I doubt this is an accurate sampling of what the boards thinks since only about 40 people voted, and there are a helluva lot more members than that. But this does make for good discussion.
So you would be willing to have LT, the most important position on the line, the weakest link? I have no idea what Jones has done to garner such support from people. Thomas has just as potential while showing more on the field of being a decent player, but people are willing to write him off in favor of Williams. But yet Jones someone has evolved into a solid LT???? I want the QB to be protected in the pocket. I want our injured/new QB to be able to pitch a tent, bake a cake, and sing the Battle Hym of the Republic before he throws the ball. What has Jones done to show that he can be that LT? He was not that impressive last year. Average at LT does not cut it IMO. If you are going to rebuild the line, you start with LT and C. I honestly don't get this devotion for Jones. You would think he played so well last year, he was the next Ogden or Pace.
Glad to see you agree. Whats going to get real interesting is what happens in the middle rds. Expect them to have a outstanding draft.
It's quite obvious. If I can only choose from D'Brick and M. Williams its of course Mario. We will never waste our pick on a position that doesn't need replacing. Personally though, I want to trade down.
Right. We need to use the pick on the sure thing. Unfortunately we aren't in position to actually choose which one to take, we will instead take the one thats left after the saints draft....
I wouldn't exactly call our tackles last year "effective". Further, I'm not as high on Abraham as many others on this board. The guy is a phenominal pass rusher, but that doesn't make him a great DE. That makes him a great pass rusher. I think Mario Williams has the potential to be a great DE, meaning pass rushing and run stopping. Abraham definitely improved as a run stopper and was great in pursuit, but he wasn't blowing anyone up at the line of scrimmage, Williams can do that. Hell, Thomas does that better. If the Jets are moving to a 3-4, Williams would be perfect. He has Shaun Ellis size, mixed with Abraham speed. Thats a scary combination. Who wouldn't want to have a Julius Peppers look-a-like on their team?
The thing I figure is this. Brick is not a sure thing. Do I think he won't be a great player? No, I think he will be a very good OL for his career. However, it is pretty commonly accepted that his run blocking could do for some improvement. Given that, there is definitely a downside to him. How about Mario? He is much closer to a sure thing than anyone else in the draft as far as I am concerned. He has big time speed, and big time size. I haven't really read, but what is his downside? Realistically everyone has some downside. What does Mario not bring to the table? You could justify either player really. Whatever faults they have can be corrected in camp. You can't say that about the QBs rated high. You don't even necessarily have that ability with RBs. These guys could both be trained to be big time players in the NFL. That said, I feel Williams brings the most to the table the instant he is drafted. To pick a guy who is going to get a windfall payday, I feel that is the biggest barometer. The guy who brings the most to the table the instant he is selected. Mario fills the void left by Abe, with freakish talent to boot. At most, even if he is absolutely great, Brick simply anchors the line. Yes, our QBs need protection, but I would rather get a playmaker for the money that will be spent at #4. Brick will create plays, Mario will make plays.
