How would you get if you were to replace Mangini?

I would rather see Mangini stay to get some stability and bring in an experienced DC and OC. Especially OC. Bill Cowher is not a great coach, he was a good leader and motivator. He also hired good coordinators.

As a HOF linebacker, 10 Pro Bowls, Super Bowl champion, 2x NFL Defensive Player of the Year, the guy has a lot of credibility with players. He knows the game and has the instant respect of every guy on the team the second he walks through the door.

The focus and intensity the guy played with was legendary. And here's a blurb from Wiki on his ability to motivate others:

"Mike Ditka said that the day before the game, he was talking to the offense while Singletary was in the next room giving the defense a motivational speech. While it started out quiet, within minutes, [Singletary] was screaming at the top of his lungs and the defensive players were throwing chairs and knocking over tables. The Bears would eventually go to win Super Bowl XX by beating the New England Patriots 46-10."

Singletary coached Ray Lewis in Baltimore in 2004 and has been an assistant head coach at San Francisco since 2005. As a coach Singletary has already paid his dues. He's interviewed for head coach jobs in Dallas, San Diego and a college job at Baylor. It's only a matter of time until he gets his shot.

Terrance Cody is going to be a beast of a NT. From the little I've been able to see of him I would put him on a par if not ahead of Raji in that role.

There is no doubt he was a great player and leader. But to date, that hasn't translated to accomplishing anything notable as a coach. So what, he was a position coach for Ray Lewis. Brian Daboll can now say the same thing about a Hall of Fame QB. I have not seen innovation or any degree of increased production out of the teams he has been a coach.

He was passed over for those head coaching jobs. It means those teams felt he wasn't good enough to be the head guy. Motivating players is nice - again, Herm was a master of this. But game planning, making adjustments, game management and building a team around your philosophy are critical parts of being a good head coach. Who knows how Singletary will tackle these tasks. I agree he will get a shot, but he's far from a sure fire success.

Agreed. No more reaching down to some positions coach. Far better is it to pick someone who has been a coordinator AND a track record.

Bill Cowher told NFL.com's Adam Schefter late last month that the earliest he could see himself returning to coaching would be in 2010.
Cowher, a CBS analyst, said he's "working on the same extension that the CBA is (and that runs through 2010). I’m on here until at least 2010 — or more. I’m really enjoying CBS. They’ve been very good and allowed me to come in."

...not to suggest that this actually means anything.

By being an anlayst Cowher is staying involved in the game. He's keeping his knowledge updated about the current rosters and coaching staffs. It's a great way for him to keep his head in the game while he relaxes and unwinds from his previous coaching responsibilities. I'm sure when he decides to come back (and he will) that he'll be refreshed and ready to go.

That being said I have never been too much of a Cowher guy. I think there are several others I'd rather have before him. But I do admit that the guy is a proven winner.

Would anyone here consider Jim Fassell? The guy did win an NFC Championship game, is offensive minded with a good track record. I'm throwing his name out there.

And I'll go ahead and just throw his name out.

But I agree with this notion and Red75bronco's: bring in an experienced DC to replace Sutton, and give Schotty a little bit more time to prove himself; if he doesn't then bring in an experienced OC too.

Holmgren is done in Seattle after this season. Most reports suggest he won't take too much time before coaching again and could be intrigued by an East Coast team.

I wholeheartedly expect him to be the HC of the 49ers next year, but ya never know. Coax Favre another year...?

If JT O'Sullivan can keep it up, Nolan will keep his job.

This has been one long marathon....40 years...While I have not given up, I remember being one poster who was unwilling to annoint this team the saviors of the franchise. At this point we have very little to show for their work, however, this is a lot of panic for a 1-2 record.

Mangini is definitely on the clock,....so long as he does not replace his DC and pretty soon his OC.
The only guys I would really think we should consider is Wade Phillips & Brian Billick.
Each of them have a relatively good track record, not to mention they have shown preferences to play the 3-4 D. It took us forever to come close to finding the correct personnel for the 3-4, I couldnt imagine the organization possibly hiring a new coach who lives and dies by the 4-3 like Spagnola.

Cowher would have no interest in the NY Jets. He is looking for duel HC & GM duties like Holmgreen.

In my opinion it's the coordinators that are the problem. Whenever Mangini took over the defense after the BYE weeks in the previous two seasons they've been great in all facets. Sutton has proven to be awful at making adjustments or even gameplans for that matter. It's clear Mangini has wanted someone else since day 1 (see Rob Ryan) and as for the OC, Schottenheimer has proven to be a one-trick pony with his magical 2006 campaign and now has nothing innovative left to give. I think Callahan should be given controls of this offense he ran some unreal offenses with Oakland. And like we do every offseason, we should try and get Rob Ryan in here to run the D... Coordinators have a huge impact these days and with Mangini having to divide his attention between 3 diff facets of the game the failures of each unit should be placed moreso on the coordinators than just the HC. Sutton HAS TO GO!

With all that said I'm not throwing this season out the window yet lol even though it totally sounds like it!

He couldn't beat Belichick even when he had vastly superior talent.

Yeah Fassell, that's brilliant. I love the idea of bringing Pete Carrol back as well. Two guys that failed in NY, and people wanting them back for round 2 of "As The Jets Burn"

Mike Martz.....Mike Martz? How do you go from winning 3 division championships and 1 conference championship to assistant again? Doesn't that pretty much say it all?

While we're at it, let's get all the ex-Enron execs to run our front office. Put Bradway back as GM and maybe even give him some OC experience.

Sutton is too tame....we need to get him a drug habit...something like crack, and then use the Mike Tyson fight-day method of not giving him any of his "medication"

Shotty? Shotty is completely inept. Nepotism rarely works out, especially when the senior member is a play-off choker.

What I find most entertaining is the man-love for a guy that while listed as the most efficient passer in history, only has what...1? 2 playoff wins under his belt? A guy that consistently threw for 7 yards on 3rd down when they needed at least 15. YAC - Yards After Chad. A collegiate scholar that never understood the concept of "avoid the sack by throwing it away"
Yes, I know, this is on the level of quantum physics, but I'm sure a guy as smart as chad can bend time and space to get the ball to his receivers in a mind-bending 30 minutes. Hello, McFly! I remember watching one day and he attempted a 25 yarder, and by the time the ball got to the receiver, Chad had already suffered and recovered from 3 season ending injuries.

Did we mention his supporting role in the movie "Unbreakable" as the injury-prone villain? He would have led us to the promised land if we had stuck with him that 1 more year he needed to perfect his time machine.

Maybe we can get Curtis Martin a bionic knee. With inflation we'd have to change his name, obviously, to something along the lines of The Six Hundred Million Dollar Man.

Or fuck it, swap one of Chad's legs and one of Curtis' arms, and bring Herm back after he's fired for being a great coach.

    Long Live Billy Bong Thorton
