http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afceast/0-3-160/One-lucky-play-saves-Jets-from-0-3-start.html One lucky play saves Jets from 0-3 start September 25, 2008 5:54 PM Posted by ESPN.com's Tim Graham DAVIE, Fla. -- That low-percentage, fourth-down lob Brett Favre somehow completed for the decisive touchdown on opening day has made a big difference in the AFC East standings. If Favre's desperation throw would've fallen incomplete or gotten intercepted -- those would be the outcomes if he had another 20 tries at the same play -- his New York Jets probably would be 0-3. The Miami Dolphins would be 2-1 and in second place. "That play was a backbreaker for us, but even on that last drive we could've gone down and scored," Dolphins tight end David Martin said Thursday. "In the back of your mind, yeah [you think about being 2-1], but you don't dwell on that. You try to look forward." The Jets look all the more lucky for beating the Dolphins. The Jets followed up with disheveled losses to the New England Patriots, a team the Dolphins destroyed, and the San Diego Chargers on Monday night. "We didn't play all that well against Miami," Favre told reporters at his Wednesday news conference. "It was a win. It's funny how wins make you overlook some of the things that you see in losses. They're magnified so much more. "I'm not going to disagree as far as have we taken a step backwards. As bad as the game may have seemed the other night with those self-inflicted wounds, which if they continue you lose. If we would have had a few more of those against Miami, we would have lost. It came down to the last play." After scoring 38 points against the Patriots on Sunday, the Dolphins can further buoy their optimism by justifying Week 1 as a fluke. That's significant because they suffered a potentially demoralizing 31-10 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2. "As soon as they saw two losses," said Dolphins receiver Greg Camarillo, "the nonfaithful fans started talking 'Aw, here comes another one of those seasons.' But what matters is the way we handle it in the locker room. Fans are going to complain, but as long as we have our confidence in the locker room, that's really all that matters. "We have the confidence of a team that has more victories than one. We don't consider ourselves a bad team. We consider ourselves favorites in every game. Going into the San Diego game [in Week 5], they don't believe they're a 1-2 team, and neither do we."
I suppose the defensive and offensive play calling would have been exactly the same by the Jets had they not got that TD. The Jets controlled the tempo of that game by winning the battle at the LOS on both sides of the ball. Sure, they had a chance at the end, but the play calling surely would have been different had we not gone into the 4th up 2 scores. It doesn't matter if you win by 1 or 21, you still get one more win.
Come on, it's typical of the media. They build up a team and then tear it down. All for the sake of "news". Anyone who understands football had to know that there was going to be some growing pains for Favre and the offense. How long that would take? No one knew.
this dumbass forgets to mention the fact that nugent was hurt and thats why we even went for it on 4th down. nugent missed a fg earlier in the game because he was hurt, so thats 3 pts there, then on the 4th down play we would have kicked another fg, which means we still would have won by 6
Well, we can play the what if game all day. If Nugent doesn't fuck up that kick the Jets get 3 and 3 or 3 and a punt. A win is a win and a loss is a loss, and you only have control of the present.' And I actually think Chad would have been a better QB for the Jets this year(yes, really), but these what if articles are completely retarded.
I'm trying to find the BS in what he says. He's right. That pass gets picked or Chad makes a better throw at the end of the game and the Jets are 0-3. The Dophins game easily could have been a loss. Anyone who knocks the Jets seems to be an idiot or a jerk according to many posters on this site. And yet most of the time the naysayers seem to be on the mark.
I'd agreee with everyting LTJF says. We barely won against Miami - it could have gone either way. And then the Jets didn't look good in our two losses. This team was one play away from being 0-3. It didn't happen but still the Jets are not playing good football right now. At least Miami has a big win to build on where they looked great. The Jets can't claim anything like that yet.
Miami looked great running college plays. Let them try that formation again and see what happens: 5 yard loss, sack of Ronnie Brown, or an INT. Don't give everything to the Dolphins because they were creative for one game.
true, the Fins would be 0-3 if they tried to play the Pats with actual NFL plays. At least the Jets were brave enough to try.
I hope Mangini makes every single Player read every single one of this BS articles, maybe that makest them step it up.
The way we've been playing, and with all the hype that's been surrounding us, we deserve the ridicule.
That is so ridiculous as that play happend in the 2nd qtr, he assumes everything else stays the same if we don't score there but if our K was healthy we wouldn't have needed to go for it on 4th down and we still would have been up 13-7 only Miami wouldn't have been getting the ball near midfield all game. If they don't call that ticky tack call on Cotch in game 2 we verey well could be 2-1 right now. We can play this game all day.
