Are we afraid to give him the ball? This guy should not be a dump off option, he should be a featured weapon in our offense!! They need to design plays just for him. Yesterday we ran a screen in the 1st qtr to... T. Jones?!!? Fck that!!
Yes, Leon needs at least 7 or more offensive touches a game. He seemed to always be in the game plan early last year, i wonder what happened
i really liked that 5 WR set or whatever we used at the end of the game, why not get him more involved in that? if he gets the ball in space, watch out Arizona!
One 5 wide set at the goal line might be clever, but to use it over and over right on the goal line without even making it seem like running the ball was an option is stupid and uncreative.
Oh i agree that to use that on the goal line for the 2PT conversion was horrible, but we used it for most of the 4th quarter, if not the whole quarter.
That's also a testament to how uncreative Schotty has been. Why do we only use the 5-wide set when the game is completely lost? Is it because he's scared to use it any other time?
Absolutely. i watched Favre's press conference after the game and he said something along the lines of: We found something that worked offensively towards the end of the game, and that's a big positive. We should be able to build on that and continue to improve the offense. i get the feeling that we will see A LOT more of the 5 WR set next week. i hope that it works as well as it did against SD. i fear that it was partially successful because SD may have been giving our WRs a bit of a cushion because they were just trying to prevent a big play, being that they had a 2-3 TD lead most of the 4th quarter.
SD was still pressuring us and occasionally playing the WR's tight, so it wasn't like they went into this Defensive shell. We gave Schotty an excuse last year because his playcalling was limited with Chad. We're giving him another excuse this year (and to an extent, rightfully so) with a newb in Favre. However, you can see serious flaws in his playcalls that have nothing to do with a QB knowing the system. One of them is this thread: getting Leon the ball. As long as Mangini is here, so will Schotty since Mangini brought him in. I still have hope for him to improve and learn, as he's a youngin. Sutton, on the other hand, needs to be assassinated.
Its hard to say, but clearly Favre is comfortable in the 4 Wide / 5 Wide sets... Brady is the same, he always said that he preferred these sets because it spreads the D out and its easier to see whats going on.
And see, that's just it. Schottenheimer needs to use these early on, not wait until we're trailing in the 2nd half, because clearly, it works. This is exactly what happened in the NE game. I'm so sick of hearing about the goal line playcalling from that game. Sure, that was a problem, but the real problem was and has been the overall playcalling from the get-go. We manufactured a solid drive and TD (to Stuckey) with about 11 mins left vs. NE. That style of Offense needs to be run right out the gates. Then think about pounding the rock.
Leon needs to get the ball in space at least 10 times a game. If he does he will at least break one big.
It is like he has the inability to mix it up. It has to be all one way or all another. Shotty is an ass. Very poor utilization of his talent. I wish they had just given Callahan the job.
Without establishing a rhythm, working the short pass and the run together well, just throwing a 4-wide set out there isn't going to work unless you have a ton of talent and a lot of sync. We have neither. That's looking for a lucky knockout punch in a fight without setting it up with jabs and bodyshots. We have good talent but no chemistry. Against Miami, they mixed up the run and pass well and set up long passes and a decent air game. We haven't done that since the first half of the first game of the season.
good point. They seem to stick to one thing and keep doing it no matter what and rarely will mix it up or make adjustments. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
The 5 WR set will work well if the opponent is playing prevent defense the entire 4th quarter, which was the case with the Chargers. Not too sure if we had the 4 WR set on the play where we scored, (even tho I know it was a shotgun formation, so chances are, it was) but if we ran that formation at any point in the first 3 quarters, were we successful in getting a drive together and translating it into touchdowns or field goals? Our line really sucked last night. Brick just flat out sucked last night. Even on prevent D, the Chargers 3-4 DL's were still able to apply pressure on Brett. He tried to do all he could to move around in the pocket and buy time to find receivers. That's the best positive to come out of it. That the guy can still move around and has pocket presence. However, running "more" 5 WR sets 'early and often' will not work as well as often knowing that defenses will game plan against it.
