I don't remember that but I DO remember the Jets blowing the Chargers out 44-13 in Chad's second start ever as a the JET QB in 2002. (The year he first busted onto the scene and we all thought he was going to be Joe Montana) In that case, I believe the Jets were 1-4 and the Chargers were 4-0 or something like that. After that, their season collapsed and ours took off.

Sure....But that was before the Brett Favre euphoria set in. SUPERBOWL dude...SUPERBOWL.

For me...It wasn't that Jets' lost, it was how they lost & how weak & pathetic they played. Very disappointing...for me. It was like the fathers/son game....:hackett:

    Patience...

Good post and all, but I wonder...

What will your opinion be if the Jets lose again? What if they lose badly?

This is a west coast trip, and the Chargers' season is at stake here, and the Jets haven't come together just yet...

I will still give the Jets slack until after the bye week. Like I keep pointing out to you guys, Mangini fixes what's broken during the bye week, they got three patsies after the bye, and once this team gets rolling we will see what they are made of.

Honestly..The Jets were expected to be 2-2 at the bye week. If they beat SD, that is gravy.

After the bye, we have Cincy, at Oakland, and KC..

    5-2

    At buffalo, St louis..

    6-3

    At NE
    at Tenn

    6-5

    7-4 if young starts.

    Denver, at SF

    8-5

    Buff, at Sea, Miami

    10-6 if hasselback is healthy...If not 11-5

Eggs Zackly my point, Green Machine!!!

    Thanks for the support.

On the other hand, as far as your predictions go? I think these Jets can beat the Titans later in the season, and I HOPE they can get some revenge against New England when they go up the turnpike...

But yeah, you can' predict much during an NFL season past that. Injuries can take a playoff team and turn them into patsies, and "non-playoff teams" can suddenly develop into world-beaters...

Based on everything I see and hear. We are going 6-10 this year.

    Here's Why.

    1) Lack of game management (clock, false starts, delays, 12 men, etc...)
    2) Gutless play-calls - conservative vs. attacking style on both sides of ball.
    3) Poor gap containment on run plays and too much cushion on pass plays.
    4) Stubborn commitment to JAGs (TJ, LC, ES, DC)
    5) Potential bust in #6 pick VG- reminds me of concerns about DR in TC & Pre-season.
    6) Lack of push on the O-Line even with AF and DW. Just pause the recorder on the snap of each run play and see if the players are ahead or behind the LOS.
    7) DE/LBs (VG, BT and CP) are all liabilities in pass coverage.
    8) Defenses inability to shed blocks. Hold and react instead of rip and swim moves to penetrate.

I'll stop here for now but you get the idea why I believe that's the best record we can hope for.

    1) It's a new team. They'll get better as the offense and defense gel.
    2) I agree. Brett Favre should play without a helmet and heave fifty-yard bombs every play of the game from now on. No guts, no glory.
    3) We shut down the Dolphins receivers, we shut down Randy Moss, and our run defense has EXCELLENT gap containment. The only back to have much success against us so far has been LaMont Jordan- most of his yards came after contact. (Not to mention that he had something to prove after everyone said he was washed up, he was playing against his former team, and he came in fresh in the second half).
    4) Our JAG starting running back had 70 yards and our JAG starting wide receiver YAC'ed a 10-yard slant into a fifty yard play.
    5) Vernon Gholston is irrelevant with Pace and Thomas playing at a high level.
    6) We had more yards from scrimmage than the Patriots against the best defensive line in the league.
    7) Pace knocked away a touchdown pass.
    8) Defensive linemen don't rip and swim and penetrate in the 3-4; they occupy blockers.

Allow me to put this in that new-fangled interweb lingo you kids are throwing around these days- you just got powned and you're a newb and you epic failed.

A lot of these are baseless, sweeping generalizations.

I totally agree with you about the Jets after the bye and about Mangini being great at fixing the team's problems then. And I'm telling you, the Chargers are NOT blowing out the Jets this week. This is going to be a very competitive game. I just have a lot of confidence in our defense's ability to ge a lot of pressure on Rivers. If Favre can limit his mistakes, we'll have a chance.

I hope they do well this year. I've been a Jets fan since 1967 so I'm no kid and watched every single game here in So. Cal since DirecTV became available.

But I've suffered so long, that I don't trust the postives anymore and focus on the negatives to soften the dissapointment after any high expectations. I've waited for that second ring for 39 years.

I will post what I observe in each of the 8 categories I listed negatives about. I hope you are right and I am wrong.

I'm not here to argue if this is going to be a blow-out or not, or who's going to win the game, but I would like to clarify a couple of things about the Chargers defense that is being called the weak spot of this team. While it should be evident by now that losing Merriman has made their defense not as effective as they'd like to be and, in a lot of cases, borderline conservative, it should be noted that they emerged to be a very good defensive team in 2007, perhaps in the top 5.

Contrary to what slimjasi said about the Chargers defense, they led the league in interceptions (30 total, 10 from Cromartie) and giveaway/takeaway differential (+24) last season, and were second only to the Patriots in number of sacks in the AFC (42) -- the Chargers led the league in sacks with 61 back in 2006. They intercepted Manning multiple times last season, and they also picked off Tom Brady 6 times in their last two playoff contests against the Patriots in 2006 (3) and in last year's AFC Championship (3). Unfortunately, the Chargers had major injuries to 5 of their star players (Rivers, LT, Gates, Merriman and NT Jamal Williams) in that championship, who were either severely limited in their ability to play or did not play at all. Merriman was injured in their regular season contest against the Titans last year, and we all know now that the injury carried over to this season.

This year's Chargers are definitely different. In addition to Merriman being gone, people also don't realize that they don't have their leading tackler in ILB Stephen Cooper, who is currently serving a 4-game suspension due to a banned substance found in one of the supplements he's taking (let the steroids accusation begin). He usually clogs the middle and defends the run and the pass effectively. The Panthers and Broncos made note of this, so they were successful in their running plays and in the end zone. Coopher's replacement, although a veteran acquired from the 49ers, has been less than stellar. And the depth in OLB isn't quite good. Merriman's replacement, Jyles Tucker, isn't as big and physical as Merriman and he's only in his second year who is still learning to play with the first team. This is why the two teams they have faced so far could afford to double-team Shaun Philips (the "other shawne") and not worry about the other guy. As a result, the Chargers couldn't pressure the quarterback effectively and the secondary is left with covering the receivers longer than necessary, and thus they give up a lot of yards and points on the board.

In this regard, it's easy to prejudge the Chargers defense as "weak", and rightfully so given their current situation, but don't discredit their abilities when they have everyone on the team. There's a reason why they were projected as #1 pick in total defense in many fantasy leagues this season. It's just that nobody foresaw their current shortcomings, but show a little of respect at least.

Anyway, Favre could have a field day if your OC calls the right plays that take advantage of the weaker defensive front from the Chargers. Running against them wouldn't be a bad idea to set up the pass because San Diego has been suspect in this area as well. Better take advantage of it now while the coaches are still trying to figure out how to improve the defense without Merriman and Cooper.
