I am going to the game in Buffalo and thought that maybe there's a chance that it could get bumped to the primetime game. It probably won't because Dallas plays the Giants that week and Indy plays the Pats in what's currently the primetime game. Anyway, if you look at the schedules of the Jets, Bills, and Pats up until then, we could all be 5-2 going into that weekend....it's crazy. In my opinion, Buffalo will definitely beat the Raiders and Rams the next 2 weeks and might beat Arizona after that so they will go into the Bye week at least 4-1, maybe 5-0. I think they will lose to the Chargers but beat Miami, so put that Bills at at least 5-2 in week 9. The Pats will beat the 49ers, Rams, and Fins but I think they will lost to the Chargers and Broncos, that makes them 5-2. And as for our Jets, I see a loss this week, but then wins against Arizona, Cincinnati, Oakland, and KC (yeah, 4-straight) to send us into Buffalo 5-2 and looking for a 5th straight win. Of those 4 straight, I potentially see a loss against the Cards but right now I am thinking positive. It could be a real battle for the division this year that could go right down to the wire. I personally think that if all 4 teams in the AFC East were operation at 100% in terms of athletic performance, efficiency, and coaching strategy, the Jets can take decisively. Yet to be seen is whether or not we can find a way to optimally match our players' abilities with the decisions on what to have them do.
All the Buff games this year will be dogfights and we are not assured of a victory. You see us winning against Arizona, Cincinnati, Oakland, and KC. Currently, I can't etch that in stone either. How many times have we played teams we should practically destroy only to play to their level and find a way to lose. Win or lose this weekend I want to see improved ST play, improved running and offensive line play, improved play calling that shows some imagination, and most of all let our rocket-armed QB play with the gifts he was given instead of making him look like a 2002 version of Chad Pennington.
Buffalo will test the depth of our secondary out. They love to go 4 and 5 wide. I fear that Coleman will be abused by them.
Did you hear Steve Young on Monday night? He pretty much summed up everything that is holding the Jets back right now. He said Eric Mangini is a very conservative coach who wants to win his games 17-14. But when your gameplan doesn't work after 45 mins, or someone makes a mistake (ie. the interception), 17-14 can become 21-17 and you don't have a gameplan for making up that 4 points in a hurry. Ohhh, ya.....Coleman matched up against that 6'5 James Hardy.....not good. Not to mention that Marshawn Lynch is an under-rated version of Marion Barber
Interesting post. I agree that all three AFC east contenders being 5-2 is a really good possibility. (although, i could easily see the Pats being 6-1) However, it's so hard to look that far ahead in an NFL season with any certainty. Should be really interesting.
ya with Brett as our QB, we should be doing some 4 -5 WR in there including Dustin Keller should be in on those plays
Did you hear the way they beat up on Mangini for those 3 straight running plays? I bet that will be a huge topic of conversation during this week pre game show
Yeah, good question...put Cotch, Coles, Smith, and Stuckey out there then leave Keller in for an escape route, or even mess them up and send Keller deep and keep Stuckey short.... We know Favre, he could see his 5th read wide open at the last minute and get the ball there.
This was Herm's mentality too, but Herm actually had a defensive scheme that was competent and he had Curtis Martin. There's no way the Jets get anywhere this year without aggessively striking down the field with Favre as the MAIN game plan. They need to pass to setup the run.
Flex scheduling doesn't start until 11/16 so there's no chance it can be moved to Sunday Night but it can be moved to 4PM.
I didn't see that but I've heard the same mantra all week--all because the Jets went for the run 3X at the goal line. I've been anti-Mangini (and anti-Pennington) for a long time, so I got no problem when people criticize them... But... since I am admittedly not all that bright when it comes to this inside stuff, can I ask a stupid question? Wasn't Brian Schottenheimer considered to be an offensive whiz-kid after the Jets made the playoffs a few years ago? Wouldn't he be the guy doing the play-calling at the goal line? Or does Mangini call the plays? If so, why are all these critics pouncing on Mangini?
Yes, I have been wondering that too. I guess Mangini is taking the blame because thats one part of the head coach's job. Also, he must be the one who OKs the gameplan. Either way, it is more than 3 plays at the goal line last week, it is our overall offensive philosophy. You are right, Schott is supposed to be a forward-thinking offensive genius that will come up with schemes other teams will never have seen let alone expected. Right now, all we are is predictable. Perhaps this is due to Mangini's conservative nature, or maybe it is because Schott isn't all he was cracked up to be. They way I see it, when you have Favre as a QB, you could randomly take plays from Madden 09, and if you have the athletes the run the routes and the O-line to protect, Brett can make them work. Football isn't all that complicated if you can execute. That's why I think we can win the division decisively if our coaches find a way to use our players to the utmost and make them play at 100% each week.
Both Mangini and Schottenheimer are getting pounded. Mangini is b/c of all the silly penalties, how many 12 men on the field penalties can we get? The writers are asking for him to allow Brett more freedom b/c ultimately he has final say on the gameplan.
