I was surprised at the number of penalties I saw yesterday. Mangini is well known for having a team that plays smart and doesn't get very many. Last season I believe we were 2nd in the league for having the fewest penalties. But look at last night's game - seven penalties. And many of them were committed by veteran guys. Barton's helmet-to-helmet infraction kept the Miami drive alive. Woody and Faneca had them on the OL. It wasn't like the rookies were causing all of the mistakes. Against a bad team like Miami we barely got away with so many penalties. But the Jets definitely have to improve on this in the future. They must cut down on the mental errors.
It is a concern, but one that can be worked on. one of them cost us a golden chance to run for a first and seal the game late in the 4th. The O-line is getting used to a new QB snap counts right now and will hopefully be settled in more in the next week or two with Brett.
I looked at a number of other clubs and 7 penalties was not that uncommon. So the Jets were a little below average for the NFL on week 1. I'd agree with most here that as the OL gets used to Favre, the penalties will go down.
Farve said after the game that some of those were his fault -- timing being off, getting used to the line, how he calls plays and makes changes....all that will get better....the PF on barton is becoming common though with his high QB hits
A little below average is a lot more then we are used to so I can see a reason for concern. With all the new players on both sides of the ball there will be some adjusting to each other going on. Here's to hoping its soon rahter then later!
DOOOOOOMED!!!!! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!!1111!!!11!!!1!!!!! It was week one on a hot, sweltering day. Mangini will fix this by next week. I'm not worried.
the penalties came at very bad times too. the woody false start on the third down run by jones where he actually picked up the first down and that would've given us the game right there. and the barton helmet to helmet which kept their drive going. couple this with the poor pass protection which led to favre's fumble and sacks. its not the end of the world cause we won the game, but we need to see some improvment in this next week.
Another mental error - Baker absolutely missed the guy charging in and basically stood there and looked around on that play. Hey Chris, you're not some stupid rookie. You've got to pick up the blitz next time. I'm just thankful Favre didn't get smashed on that play.
