Offensive tackle Willie Anderson lost his starting jobs with the Cincinnati Bengals during training camp. Now, he's lost his roster spot, too. The Bengals released Anderson on Saturday as part of their moves to get to the 53-man roster limit. The 33-year-old Anderson was the most tenured Bengal, having played 12 seasons in Cincinnati. Injuries limited him to seven games last season, ending his streak of four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances. He became a backup to Stacy Andrews in training camp, and declined to take a pay cut Saturday to stay with the team. ******************** If I were Tannenbaum I'd be all over Willie Anderson (6-5 / 340). It would be great to have a former Pro Bowl player as our first reserve. I'd feel so much better with at least one experienced backup OL on the roster. We don't have much cap room, though. Too bad we didn't cut Barrett and use his $$ to attract Anderson.
We have plenty of money to sign a backup o-lineman - somewhere around $2 million in cap space now. I agree, WA would be nice depth. Can he also play Guard? That would be an important key as to whether Tangini would be interested in him or not. edit: Actually, if he can play guard he would probably take Moore's spot eventually. He could be depth until he's up to speed with the first team. Hah - that would make all of our starters former first round picks. He was making 3M when he was cut. You can't offer the vet minimum to the guy and expect him to be very happy about it. Something like 2M would probably get it done.
Depends on the market. I still say the Jets should offer the league minimum. If there is no one else to offer him a contract, either he takes the Jets offer, or leave the table. If there is some other team that would offer more, fine. More power to him. It's that simple.

That was a quote from January from a Cincinatti writer. I put it in to show that Anderson is a good locker room presence and team leader. The previous quote is as of today - "show the people who doubted me that I can still play”. That is one motivated big fella. I would assume that a number of teams will offer him a 1 or 2 year contract in the near future.
I know. That league minimum quib wasn't intended for you - if it read that way, it's my fault. I'd like to see the Jets pick him up too - you can never have too many quality OL.
We can use his experience, and the fire he has to prove the Bengals wrong, to our advantage. It may be a blessing to have this guy come off the bench. May prolong his career, and make him more productive when he does play.WE can also use the depth. I say we get Brett to give him a call!
I'm sure there are plenty of teams that would use him as a starter, plus the fact that we have less than $2.0M in cap space. He would be a great pickup, but I just can't see it happening.
While they are at it they should grab Rudi Johnson too. Maybe they can get a 2 for 1 deal. A lot of people here want no part of him but for the right price I would definitely give him a shot. I am guessing he is still better than anything else we have. And 4 weeks would surely be long enough to decide if we want to keep him when Chatman comes off suspension.
Damnit. Didn't know where to put this, I don't think it deserves its own thread: Ravens didn't release LB Jameel McClain, who I wanted for LB depth very badly. Apparently has been doing wonders for the Ravens on ST, too.
There are so many teams that could use a solid OL right now. These teams offer starting opportunities and have much more cap space for a big contract. So I think the Jets are way down on the list. Chicago just IR'd their first round pick - a T. Their OL is shaky now. Tampa Bay just lost its top OL due to injury. Bryant McKinnie starting T for Minnesota got suspended for 4 games. KC is trying to rebuild its OL and give some push for Larry Johnson. Miami is rebuilding its OL pretty much from scratch.
