Why was Chatman used so much last night ? Even as our #3 back I would have hated to see him go down. Why risk the guy to injury ? ********************************************* Jesse Chatman-RB- Jets Aug. 28 - 10:14 pm et Jesse Chatman ran for 93 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries and added six receptions for 87 yards against the Eagles Thursday night. Even for a preseason finale, 180 total yards is a fine night. Chatman remains the No. 3 running back for the Jets, but there is a possibility that he could work his way into a short-yardage role this season.
Who else was there? The only other candidate was Jehuu, but I think the Jets actually wanted to move the ball on offense. Our RB depth is excellent, even if our starter is questionable.
maybe they felt like they wanted so see how he would react after carrying a load like that. My opinion he looked pretty damn good. Sometimes he dances behind the line a bit too long but he usually makes it work somehow.
They had to play somebody. It was a good chance for Chatman to show if he can be counted on for some 3rd down carries or if he could spell Jones/Washington if one of them should get dinged up for a few series.
I guess that's the point I was driving at - why not keep some scrub RB for the last game so you can make sure your #3 RB doesn't get injured.
Somebody has to suit up and play. Why even have this game if everyone's going to wear a dress to it? We need to save our #3 RB now? When is he going to play again? Maybe they wanted to see how he'd do as a featured back for a game in case he's needed.
Like it or not he's going into the season as our #1 RB. No good reason to play him against future grocery baggers and risk an injury...even if he's been less then impressive.
Yeah, that was a wise-ass comment but in thinking about it I would have liked to see if he could even get yards against another team's 2nd or 3rd string defenders. If he couldn't it would be good to know that now rather than later.
I'd have much preferred to see Caulcrick take the bulk of the carries. Find out if the guy can be a feature back or if he's destined to become a FB.
I was fine with Chatman playing the entire game. He had a good game and showed he can handle the workload if Jones were to go down this season. One thing that scared me was Keller in there and fighting for yards on a meaningless game. On that 1st catch where he refused to go down and got knocked around by 4-5 guys I got pretty pissed cause I don't want to see this kid get injured. On the positive side...it took 4-5 guys to bring him down eventually. Hehe.
I think they wanted to see if he could handle full reps behind our line, because at times we are going to need a physical back to go against physical defenses. The Eagles' defense is very physical, and I think they were a good test. 2 years ago, when we beat the Pats, it was because ran ran our only true pile pusher Kevan Barlow down their throat the whole game. Barlow wasn't much for us as a feature back, but he was the type of guy that could wear physical linebackers down with repeated reps. Thomas Jones does not strike fear into opposing defenses most times because he doesn't punish them between the tackles. We face the Pats and Bills twice this year and they both have tough, punishing run defenses. There are probably going to be a number of situations this year that we see as much or more of Chatman than we see of Jones for that very reason. Edit: As far as Caulcrick goes, maybe the CS hasn't seen enough from him to warrant that many carries, or maybe they've already decided to let Tony Richardson mentor him as a FB.
That was my first thought too, they wanted to see if he could go the whole game. I was impressed with him.
I think Jesse C. is the third RB, and so, without Musa S. he was the odd man out. Do you remember who all was screaming and hollering about "Who the eff is this Jesse has-been?!!" when he was signed by the NYJs....? It is really satisfying to see how those FO moves pan out, isn't it? Personally, I loved watching Jesse run last night. And, by the way, according to his after-game interview, so did Leon.
I was impressed with him last year, and knew I'd continue to be impressed. As a depth guy, I think we got a FA steal.
Leon is probably going to benefit most from Chatman's carries. Imagine getting pounded by a bruiser for 3-4 straight plays and then having someone that fast the change the pace with?
I saw this kid run in pre-season last year and I was really impressed. Then when Brown went down he stepped up and made plays with that shitty OL. When the Dolphins released them, I thought it was prob because of some injury of some sort, because I couldn't honestly figure out why Parcells would've let this guy go. Glad he's a Jet now.
