Maybe we can con Minnesota to take Clemens like Bollinger. Look at that scrambling pass to the back of the endzone by RATLIFF. GOD DAMN!
I think the Jets would be geniuses to pull off a move like that. If they could rip them off... to the tune of say... a 4th round pick (I know I'm dreaming)... it would be a coup.
Not to mention the questionable use of the word "thought" in conjunction with the word "interesting" in the thread title. Is there some penalty for false advertising on this forum?
It is kind of awkward though. Clemens isn't progressing and Ratliff looks good. I'd have a hard time slotting Clemens #2 at this point. Wrong message to the team and all.
Keeping Clemens at #2 shouldn't be a problem. He's got some game experience and the receivers have dropped a lot of his passes this preseason. Ratliff has played great and he may turn out to be the QB of the future, but all of the success he's had has been against 2nd and 3rd teamers. If you put him at #2 and he struggles, where does that leave you? Clemens deserves a chance with at least a halfway decent oline before he gets traded/released. Hopefully, neither Ratliff or Clemens will have to play meaningful minutes this year, but keeping Clemens at #2 will give him confidence and if he struggles they can move to Ratliff.
All of Clemens failures this preseason has been against second and third stringers. Bill Parcells once said that the Quarterbacks sole job is to get the team into the endzone, and out of Clemens, Ratliff, and Ainge (who only played the second half of the last game), Clemens did the WORST job out of the three. He wasn't bad last year but you have to wonder if running for his life all season long hasn't completely shaken his confidence and given him David Carr syndrome. Last year he aired it out, this preseason he looked very intent on not making mistakes. If this is what he is to become then we should move him and allow Ratliff to be the primary benefactor of backing up Brett Favre, since he is not yet tainted.
The Jets have to keep both Clemens and Ratliff. If Favre leaves after one season (or even two), we need Kellen abd Brett II to compete for the starting position. I love what ratliff has done so far, but we cannot with surety that it will translate against starting caliber defenses. The fact that he has made something happen every time he's played is encouraging.
Or we go out and get another QB like we did this year. I really don't ever see Clemens as the starting QB for any period of time on this team. That's not to say I see Ratliff or Ainge as that franchise QB either. I am just hoping Favre stays an extra year so we can either draft or trade for the guy that be.
You know, I had that same thought recently. Tampa Bay has had pretty decent success handling the QB position this way.
You are the man. Buzz: Trade Imminent? Posted on August 30th, 2008 by Bent Latest blog post from Cimini suggests the Jets are about to make a trade. However, it may *not* be for Jesse Chatman, whose agent has reportedly denied that his client has been traded OR released. The cutdown deadline is 4pm ET. Cimini wonders if the trade could be for Chris Baker or Justin Miller. Meanwhile, an unsubstantiated rumor (apparently from ESPN1050, hat tip Ed(itor)) says that Kellen Clemens has been traded to the Vikings. We?ll keep you posted? http://www.thejetsblog.com/2008/08/3...rade-imminent/
