There is not a lot to take from this game in terms of how the team will do this season, but I took a few things from it. I got home from work late and missed the first half of the 1st quarter. Ratliff Continues to Impress. Ratliff only got one drive in today but it was an outstanding effort by him. - Standing in the pocket waiting till the last second to throw the ball on the screen while a defender was breathing down his neck. He was pummeled the second he got rid of the ball. - Stepping up in the pocket as it collapsed around him, then scrambling for 6 yards or so when no one was open. - The TD play was Favre-esk. He faked the DE closing down on him, making him jump, stepped up to avoid him, rolled out and hit Raymond in the back of the field while on the run. I cannot believe how poised this kid is. I really can't. Chatman is a Baller. I don’t care about how many yards he got, or the TD, none of that means anything in this game. I continue to be impressed with the way he runs the ball. He has a low center of gravity, good balance, never seems to go down by the first guy that hits him, and is always making second and third efforts to pick up more yards. He gives us good depth at running back and may be better than our starter from the 2006 season. He carried the load today and never showed signs of letting up. He must have touched the ball over 30 times. Gholston Not Ready It was to be expected, but he still looks like he’s swimming out there. He’s thinking and not reacting. Against the second and third team of Philly today he looked worse than he did last week against the Giants starters. Interestingly, the story on him in college was that he showed up for the best competition and seemed to disappear for the weaker competition. I don’t know what to think about that, it’s just an observation. Tannenbaum Hints at Final Roster MT was in the booth for a little while getting interviewed by Buttle and whoever that other guy is. Buttle asked him about the final roster and he hinted at a couple things. 1) They are definitely taking into consideration versatility in terms of being able to play more than one position. 2) He went a step further and dropped a few names: Barret CB/S, Stuckey WR/CB, Turner & Mongomery for multiple positions on the O-line, Murrell OLB/DE, Cummings ILB/DE. 3) He mentioned that they will probably have a non-traditional roster in terms of numbers of players at certain positions but didn’t say which positions. Who on First? Wow, who wasn’t shocked to see Stuckey playing CB for a good portion of the game today? He actually didn’t look half bad. Barret was again seen playing safety. Poteat also played some safety, and actually got an INT while doing so. Buttle Moment Buttle tried to be funny but made a horrible joke about Favre, the salary cap, and hanging deer somewhere? Man that guy is a jackass. What’s worse, our brainiac GM responded to the joke and said, yeah we brought the deers in. Hopefully he was just trying to speak in terms that Buttle could understand. Ainge Sighting As expected Ainge finally saw a significant amount of playing time. He looked a bit lost out there and had happy feet, but that’s normal for a rook in his first preseason. He did throw some nice passes including a TD to David Ball in the back of the end zone. From a physical standpoint he seems to have all the tools, now he just needs to develop. Roster Spots Guys that solidified a spot: -Ratliff (as if he didn't already). -Cummings – Once again making plays. -Henry – Made a couple of nice catches, one of the with good YAC. Guys who solidified getting cut: -Carroll - Pass interference, getting burned deep - I said it from the first time I saw him in a Jets uni, he is terrible in coverage and a pass interference call waiting to happen. His play and packers fans confirmed that. He could be an asset on special teams and may have actually saved his job with a heads up fumble recovery after all the bad things he did. Unfortunately for him, we probably don’t have another roster spot for someone who is only going to contribute on ST. To me, he’s an older version of Justin Miller but worse in coverage and pass interference abilities. -Caulcrick – He was already in danger of getting cut. Missing a few blocks, and doing nothing when given the opportunity to carry the rock sealed his fate. -Brackins – Another guy already in danger of getting cut that only made matters worse. He dropped the only 2 passes I saw thrown to him, and they hit him in the hands. Guys who played well but never had a chance. -Raymond – A couple of receptions including a TD. -Ball – A couple of receptions including a TD. It’s gotta suck putting together a good effort in the last preseason game knowing you have basically no shot to make the roster. Sweet Plays -Henry made a nice shoe string catch on a slant and turned it into about a 20 yard gain with YAC. He also made a sweet leaping sideline catch that required him to tap his feet as he was coming down towards the sideline. -Elam made a nice INT in the red zone on an ill advised pass by Feeley. -The Ratliff TD pass was just a thing of beauty. Foreshadowing? Shotty called a ton of screen passes today. Was that a sign of things to come or was it just a way to hurry up and get the stupid 4th preseason game over? Quotes Chatman – This is best team he's ever played on in terms of chemistry and camaraderie. Buttle – This Jets team has the most depth he's ever seen them have. It's Buttle so take it for what it's worth. Tanenbaum did agree with him and discuss the depth, but what's he going to do disagree? Mandatory Favre Info Favre was in the coaching huddle after Mangini called a timeout prior to the last play of the first half. From lip reading and his body language I gathered that he was asking to go in as receiver and have the QB throw to him and he’d pass it backwards across the field. This is complete speculation on my part, but he was definitely trying to get the coaches to do some kind of trick play. The ensuing play was a short pass in the flats off the snap that was dropped. Considering there was about 50 yards to cover for a TD, I’m assuming there was some kind of trickeration planned. Special Teams - I noticed today that graham is still the holder. After thinking about it, I’m almost positive he was the holder all preseason. I’m a bit disappointed that we aren’t using Brad Smith there as it was rumored that he was practicing there in TC. I’d rather have a QB doing that job in case of a bad snap, but I digress. - Nuge hit two FG’s today but had kickoff out of bounds. That can be the difference between a win or a loss as much as a missed FG could be. Get your shit together Nuge. Appearance - I cannot decide whether Faneca looks like a badass dude from a biker gang or a fruity artist. Thoughts? - Hey Favre, what's with the cheesy sideburns dude? You look like a 12 year old kid who hasn't got a haircut in 3 months but for some reason has gray hair. - Tanenbaum looked like he was either getting jacked, or getting fat. It was hard to tell with the suit on, but it would be cool if our GM could kick any other GM’s ass. Rule Question A couple of times this preseason I’ve seen plays that I thought were intentional grounding. Even if you are outside the pocket you have to reach the line of scrimmage when throwing the ball away, don’t you? Andy Reid is a Jackass With less than 4 minutes left in the game, Eagles backup right guard Gene-Giles went down with what appeared to be a significant knee injury. Reid and McNabb were out on the field as the medical staff evaluated him like it was a real big deal. He went on to use all his timeouts when the Jets had the ball with Just over two minutes left to try and get a two minute drill in. Mangini was clearly annoyed that he didn’t just let the game end. Buttle is an Idiot He just is.
Very nice report, thanks. I think you mean Barret when you say Barton and no, as long as the QB is out of the pocket, it's not intentional grounding.
1. It should be Jesse Chatman. (and not Chatam) 2. Again, it should be David Barrett. (and not Barton) Other than that... solid report. Thanks.
Good write-up I thought I saw Raymond drop a few passes.. I don't remember seeing anything from him besides that one TD. Every time I see Ball on the field, though, I'm impressed. He's definitely had a number of nice grabs out there. So is Eye-an.
If he did I could have missed them. I was getting a few things done when commercials came up and missed half of the first quarter because I had to work late.
Chatman had 35 touches 93 rushing yards 87 receiving yards Lincoln Financial Field is vastly superior to Giants Stadium. I understand it is only a few years old and therefore of course it's going to be nicer. But I mean it's not even close. Night and day. 1972 Dolphins vs 2007 Dolphins. You see what I'm sayin'? Larry Brackins must go. His drop of a would-be touchdown was the 2nd worst play I've seen all preseason. (The worst play was the dropped pass by Marcus Monk late in the Chiefs-Bears game. He got scared because two defenders were within 10 feet of him.) Caulcrick had a horrible missed block in the 1st half. Clemens was really bad. Brett Favre was booed vociferously when he came out of the tunnel. Ditto when he was shown on the video screens very late in the game. Marques Murrell was all over the field and clearly will make the roster. Ahmad Carroll has not improved since he left Green Bay. He looks almost as bad as Jason David (Saints cornerback, who in 2007, had one of the worst individual seasons in NFL history). He could make the team as a returner, but they should avoid using him on scrimmage plays unless there is an injury to someone or the game is a blowout. I did not like the draft selections of Vernon Gholston and Erik Ainge. Nothing I've seen in preseason has made me change my mind on them. I still don't like either one. Maybe Gholston could someday become a player. I have no hope about Ainge, though.
Good write up Broadway Brett. However, I disagree with the Ahmad Carroll assessment. In the 1st quarter, on a man to man coverage down the field he stayed with the receiver and left him very little room to work with in order to make the catch. Not sure if the receiver came up with it, after he hit the grounds out of bounds, but he was out of bounds regardless. Pass incomplete. The pass interference call I believe was called on the offense and was called back. I don't think he got called all game for any pass interference since in the beginning of the 4th the Jets had 1 penalty for 5 yards and that was for the delay of game from Clemens. On that Poteat interception, Carroll actually followed the receiver cutting across the field and in the last moment, reached up and helped tip the ball to Poteat. The other play came from Special Teams which he was able to recover. I do agree, he LOOKS like a pass interference waiting to happen, but that could be cause he's always playing hard. My assessment on Barrett however is that he hasn't shown us anything playing CB nor Safety. There was a blow coverage on his part (I'm not really sure how to interpret it, because it was Stuckey playing strong-side corner, so I don't know who missed the coverage Barrett or Stuckey). However, Stuckey appeared to drop back into coverage and Barrett rolled Safety help towards the weak-side. Luckily Barrett's speed helped him recover on the play and bring the receiver down. After that, I didn't see much of Barrett. These are my assessments along with my $.02
I must have missed that play. The pass interference was declined because even after blatantly interfering with the receiver he was still out of position and the receiver caught the ball for the first down. It was just an all around bad play and I haven't seen him make a good play outside of special teams. It sounds like maybe he did though. I am 90% sure Carroll didn't touch the ball. The receiver tipped it to poteat. The difference with Barret is that he knows the system. He's been in it as long as anyone on the team. I don't think Carroll has been any better in coverage than Barret either. I've always had a hard time really following the safety play so I can't really comment on that. I'll take your word for it.
Are you serious?... it's late, so I'm hoping it's just my sarcasm detector failing me. Kevan Barlow was like 6-2.. he could have tripped over the line of scrimmage and he'd have averaged more than 2.8 yards a carry. I'm not sold on Chatman, but I'm guessing he'll make the cut since we don't have depth at RB.
Regarding the Barrett/Stuckey play...it was so hard to know what had happened cause it was Stuckey playing corner and Barrett playing Safety, but someone blew the coverage. I'm not sure if Stuckey was supposed to stay with the receiver and Barrett was supposed to roll towards the middle/weak side, or Stuckey was just supposed to drop back into coverage and take away the flat, and Barrett should've picked up the receiver as he made his way up field. Being that this was Stuckey's first time at corner, and Barrett knowing the system, I'm gonna toss it to Stuckey having a mental lapse on the play.
