Haven't seen a lot of the preseason games, but is Gholston rushing out of a three point stance or standing up? I'd imagine if he's standing up then yes, it actually is different than what he was doing in college. And from what I've heard, he has been putting some pressure on the QB. Not sacks, but pressure. But remember: he can't just pin his ears back and rush. That's not his job. His job is to develop into a complete linebacker, not a situational pass rusher. We're building a Vrabel here people; not a Tuck. It's going to take time. I'd rather he remain unimpressive while building the fundamentals than excite the masses with a couple of nifty bull rushes. He sounds humble, he sounds like he wants to learn and he's got all the physical attributes. We've got good teachers. Let the kid develop. This isn't a D'Brick-Mangold-Revis situation where we drafted a guy who needed to produce immediately. This is a Harris situation. Let him take some time and grow. And y'all can save that "Top ten draftees need to produce IMMEDIATELY." Typically, yeah they should. As luck would have it, our pick turned into a luxury pick and not a necessity pick.
It would be glorious. If he can step right in and play at a high level right away this defense will have a nice young core. Rhodes, Revis, Harris, Lowery, Pace, Gholston (hopefully) Hopefully there are some 3-4 DE's we can target in next years draft. Jenkins, Thomas and Coleman are 29 so they have at least a few more good years if they stay healthy.
Gholston has missed MUCH more camp than most rookies. Because of NCAA / NFL rules, he couldn't attend OTA's until his class graduated. Since Ohio State is on the quarters system (not the semester system) they graduate their students very late in the spring. So Gholston couldn't practice with the Jets (even though he was not enrolled in school). It's a bad rule that needs to be changed.
Does Lowery remind anybody else of James Hasty? Same build, good ball skills and a solid tackler. I'm really liking this kid.
Hopefully Lowery will be lined up against Desean Jackson in the final preseason game. D. Jackson seems to be emerging pretty well in the absence of Reggie Brown for the Eagles. D. Jackson really is a burner. Lets see if Lowery can overpower the smaller Jackson and keep up with him on the deep throws. If I had to compare Revis and Lowery to current CB's of the NFL, I would say... Revis is like Marcus Trufant and Lowery is kinda like Nnamdi Asomugha. Obviously Lowery is not at Asomugha's level yet, but he kinda plays like him
how's maimi's #1 overall draft pick doing? didn't vg own him in college? watch out cp, vg is coming for ya.
Yes to everything you wrote. It's week 4 of preseason. It's alarm time around here. You'll get used to it in another year or two.
I'd rather see Poteat vs. the Pats than Lowery. Glad to hear he is progressing and will likely start mid season (if not game 1). But i think Brady would pick on him (like he would do any CB- vet or not). then again, brady can make most cb's look stupid.
That's how Buffalo built their team that went to four straight Super Bowls. They were bad in the mid 80s, then every time you looked they were adding a defensive piece here, another there, next thing you know they had this machine going.
I'll be rooting for Lowery- and I love what I've seen out of him so far, but, as with most rookies, there will be some bumps in the road... Here's to hoping a few rookie mistakes don't make Pennington look better than he is against us...
Any quarterback who doesn't get any-if not, much-pressure back there and has a week and a half to find an open receiver will more often than not make ANY CB look stupid. Hopefully, Jenkins, Pace, Barton, Harris and Thomas will make it rain this year with blitzes when playing the Patriots, which SHOULD play into Lowery's ball-hawk skills in anticipating routes and getting some pickies off Brady.
last game he crashed the pocket and hurried some throws and wouldve obliterated eli if pace missed his sack. he has the physicality, he just needs more pass rushing techniques, one thing ive yet to see from him are rips and swims he bull rushes alot. that is the only knock i can have on him now. but he went from a down lineman to standing up the transition from college to pros is enough let alone that kind of psoition change in a complicated 3-4 defense. id give him more time before i worry about anything.
I could have sworn that this was a Lowery thread. Gholston will be okay. Let take what he is doing to be just what it is....a rookie transitioning into a new position. A position with more mental and physical demands than what his old position required. So far so good. Even if he starts out as a "Merriman" type OLB who can pin back his ears and just go all out after the QB, we would have no reason to complain about the pick. He can be a "Vrabel" type in due course. He has certainly displayed the physical attributes to get the job done. Now back to Lowery..... He actually reminds me a lot of former Cowboys great, Everson Walls. Not so much in physical attributes but more on his sense of anticipation and ability to play at a higher level mentally. The knock on Walls too was that he wasn't fast enough. But the guy was a mainstay in a very good defense for the better part of a decade. He also reminds a little bit of Otis Smith. A a ball-hawking tenacious defender who provided solid run support. Same physical attibutes too. If Lowery ends his NFL career being compared to these two guys, then we would have the makings of an awesome secondary for years to come.
