Brett Favre-QB- Jets Aug. 22 - 1:11 pm et The Jets reportedly tweaked Brett Favre's contract slightly after acquiring him from Green Bay. His remaining salaries ($12M in 2008, $13M in 2009, and $14M in 2010) are intact, but Favre can now retire from the Jets at any time and not have to forfeit bonus money. The Jets got their man, but left themselves unprotected. ****************************** I wonder why the Jets would do this ? Was it to attract Brett to come here ?
Why have contract disputes with him to drive him away further. We are at the icon's mercy for giving us a QB who can do it all. Who cares what how unprotected we are. We have him for this year and maybe next. The Jets probably understand their situation and know that they need a new QB. They'll probably draft another one next year. Money is not the issue when it comes to the most important position on the football field.
Why would we need to draft another QB next year we already have a Brett to step in and lead the team when Favre retires...
Unless I'm missing something, this is a non-story. Favre does not have to repay bonuses if he retires early. So what? As far as I know, the Jets didn't pay any of those bonuses - the Packers did. Basically, if I understand the situation, if Favre retires before the end of his contract, he would not have to repay bonuses paid by the Packers to the Jets. I'm not sure how an early retirement would impact the Jets' cap, but the Jets hardly can complain about now getting bonus money back when it was the Packers that paid it in the first place. Again, I may be missing something, but I don't really see the big deal here.
Tampa Bay collected the pro-rated portion of Jake Plummer's contract after they traded for him from Denver but he never played for them. I think at the time Green Bay was looking to trade Favre, there were some rumors about trading him to a team he would never play for - so that team could pocket the prorated portion of his original signing bonus too, in exchange for a 6th or 7th round pick. That would make sense for a team that's not as well off financially as other NFL teams, like the Bills, Bengals or Jaguars, for example. The Jets don't lose any actual money by agreeing to do this since the signing bonus was paid by Green Bay years ago. And for salary cap purposes I think that stays with Green Bay too; I know it would if he was cut, I'm pretty sure it's the same in a trade.
Money has never been an issue with BF. He has offered to take pay cuts just to get certain players. He didn't come back this year for the money - it is solely for the love of the game and the desire to continue playing.
H'mm ever hear of somebody named Boose? If you have not he was a NYJ pick who was the sackmaster champ of the pre season 2 years in a row no less. Now when the regular season started Boose was farther away from the other sides QB then you are from the moon. BR could be exactly the same shines in xhibtion games & is a complete bust in games that count. So to say he is our "next" QB IMHO is a total stretch of ones imagination
The kid can move in the pocket, move the ball down the field, and run a 1 minute drill effectively - which makes me think in a year or two give him a shot... but yes, he needs to play against 1st teams for a true test of his abilities.
Dont worry I see what U see about BR but until he can go out there week after week in games that count he is just a dream, just a dream that can easily disappear especially as others teams begin to see him on film
i have to agree with both of you, he does appear to have potential but to decide he is the guy for next year without any kind of backup plan would be very dangerous. but hey this is the situation that they have put themselves in. there really isnt any way around it hopefully one of the younger guys proves to be a quality starter when his number is called but i dont think we are going to get a top 5 draft pick to use on the top notch qb next year and we really dont have anyone to step right in with this team and really take it and run with it. now im depressed thinking about next year
oh they are crossed they are surely crossed. at this point i think we might have a better chance with ratliff though. either way i will enjoy this season and hope for the best in the future.
Unloading Pennington's contract still has the Jets in the black no matter what they pay Favre this season.
