I'll say it again...Lowery = Our Asante Samuels. Samuels was a mid-round pick that impressed throughout his rookie year. Of course, Lowery hasn't even impressed for a full preseason yet, but their games and size are just so similar. And Lowery's got the potential to be better in man to man.
If Revis had gone to camp maybe he would have done better against Randy Moss in week 1: RMoss 09/09 @ NYJ 9 183 20.3 51T 1
Yeah if only Revis was lined up against him that game............ oh yeah what difference does that make?
I got to see Lowery play a few times last season, living in Nevada we occasionally get a WAC game and I remember the San Jose St vs Hawaii game. The Spartans had the game won and a large part of it was because of Dwight. He just always seems to be around the ball. I think it was the bowl game against New Mexico and the guy made plays it seemed like he was in on every play.
I've been very impressed with him so far. Like I said the other day in response to a Winston post - I would definitely not be suprised if he becomes our starter opposite Revis.
I trust Mangini's judgement on DB's. Now Rhodes was a great player under Sperm but he has excelled under Mangini. The Revis pick is looking like a great pick too (and remember they traded up to get him). I would not be the elast bit surprised to see Lowery starting by mid season.
The fact that Mangini and company have not given up on Justin Miller is most encouraging. There's no question that Dwight Lowery is the real deal. However, we do need more than two (how about five?) killer CBs to have the best pass defense we can. The way the CS is pushing on Miller is good. There will be lots of different combinations in play this year, I hope. The more the merrier.
It looks like he's progressing to become a solid CB in the NFL, which, to be honest, I am surprised about. After he was drafted I immediately thought he would make a better FS than a CB....and while he is showing well at CB, I still think he would make a better FS. Reason: He thinks like a FS needs to think - he sees the defense as a whole. He is not aware of just his man and the QB. His whole car metaphor only proved the point. From the FS spot you have to know what is happening in the entire defense so you can play the run or the pass and no where to be. While I think he will make a fine CB in time, I do think he would make an even better FS and the staff should move him there. It would be like the Denver Broncos DJ Williams playing middle linebacker last season - still a great player doing well at MLB - but then moving him back to OLB this season because he will be even better there (same for Keith Brooking on the Falcons). Its very rare to draft a guy who has the mental capacity and awareness as a rookie to tell you what is happening on the whole defense. In my humble opinion, move to Lowery to FS and let Miller play CB. To me, Miller as a starting CB is better than Smith as a starting FS.
