Hey guys, with two weeks left in the preseason, I think we all have pretty much formed our opinions on the roster. What might be fun is to construct the 53-man roster as a board. What we'll do is have two poll questions at once: How many player at a specific position should make the roster? Which of the following players should make the roster? The number of players we keep will be matched up with the player voting, the highest voted players at that number will make the TGG roster. I will post details about each player at the given position, and voting on each position will last two days. We'll start with a pretty easy one: Quarterbacks Teams typically carry three quarterbacks on the active roster, and dress two. The Candidates Brett Favre: 6'2 222 Favre enters his 18th season as a pro. Last year, he threw for 28 touchdowns with 15 interceptions, completed 66.5% of his passes, and finished with a 95.7 rating. Brett Favre was acquired by the Jets for a 2009 conditional draft pick. Kellen Clemens: 6'2 223 Kellen Clemens enters his 3rd season as a pro. Last year, he threw for 5 touchdowns with 10 interceptions, copmleted 52.0% of his passes, and finished with a 60.9 rating. Clemens was drafted by the Jets in the 2nd round of the 2006 draft. Brett Ratliff: 6'4 235 Brett Ratliff enters his 2nd season as a pro. Last season, Ratliff was a member of the Jets practice squad. In his career at Utah, Ratliff completed 59.2% of his passes with 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Ratliff was signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2007 draft. Erik Ainge: 6'6, 220 Erik Ainge enters his 1st season as a pro. Last year, playing at Tennessee, Erik Ainge threw 31 touchdown passes with 10 interceptions, completing 62.6% of his passes. Ainge was drafted by the Jets in the 5th round of the 2008 NFL draft.
When is Ainge gonna get in to a preseason game? He's gotta get some reps soon i would imagine before we cut him. I thought he was a good pick but we haven't really seen all that much of him yet. Ratliff has been very impressive no question, at this point he is almost a lock for the team, but id still like to see what Ainge has.
I'm not sure I'd demote Clemens to number 3 just yet. He is, after all, the QB that has been in the system the longest. At the same time, if we ever get into a blowout (hopefully in our favor) where Favre can sit out the last quarter, I'd like to see Rat get put in as opposed to Clemens, like Ray Lucas in 1998 when he was number 3 behind Testaverde and Glenn Foley. Keep Clemens number 2 so he can come in off the bench if the unthinkable should happen earlier in the course of a game. And yes, Ainge for practice squad.
Heh i like how Ratty has gotten more votes then Farve in this poll. Clearly he is impressing everyone.
Alright, because a) time is not on our sides and b) this seems a foregone conclusion, I'll stop tonight at midnight and then post Running Backs
This is the problem I have with Clemens. Many people said Clemens deserved a shot over Pennington, since we don't know what we have in Clemens just yet. Now, what if I apply same logic to Clemens? We've seen just a bit of Clemens last season, and this TC, and we know it's not promising. Ainge, on the other hand, didn't even have a chance to show what he has due to his injury. So... does that mean I'd like to see the Jets can Clemens in favor of Ainge? I'd say yes. I'd go with Favre, Ratliff and Ainge - or means permitting, put Ainge in PS or IR, and go with Favre, Clemens and Ratliff. Just know that I just don't think Clemens has anything useful or serviceable to offer.
Ainge would never make it to week 2 on the PS, some team would snatch him up immediately with all that shitty QB situations going on around the league.
I like this idea. I think people should vote for whoever they feel must make the team. Hopefully, we'll have a few spots left over at the end, and we can have a wild card vote with guys like Ainge in it because I have to take a look at the whole roster at the end and then see where the final few spots are open.
I'll admit I was one of those idiots that didn't realize it was a mulitple vote. Maybe if Ed Jr would bold it, it might catch the eye.
I actually think that IF KC doesn't show something inspirational , he will be the one who goes. 3 QBs on roster..KC bye bye , go back to roping steers. lol, Battle of the Bretts... favre has 60 votes , Ratliffe 61 hmy::rofl:
http://forums.theganggreen.com/showpost.php?p=895653&postcount=75 I think we should keep 4 QBs on the roster, although I know what that does to the flexibility of the rest of the team. I think this type of situation is why our FO/CS looks for players that can fill multiple roles. Favre, while exciting and dynamic, has a history of being non-committal, and while I would love to paint Ted Thompson as the bad guy with this Packers' offseason, I and every other objective fan looking at this situation knows it worked both ways and has for a number of years. A healthy competition among the young guys we have behind Favre will only benefit us in the long run (or short run in this case) when he ultimately retires. I'm not very optimistic about Clemens at this point but I also now there have been a ton of contributing factors to his current situation and I'm not ready to write him off just yet.
Why would Ainge get snapped up ? He's coming off of hand surgery and hasn't thrown a pass in a preseason game. And his college career was so great he lasted for 150 picks. Ainge can not help a team this year. His only value is 2 or 3 years down the road. By now teams that want a developmental QB have already chosen one and trained the guy through OTA's and summer camp. Those players are way ahead of where Ainge would be if he joined a new team. So I can't see the risk in putting Ainge on the practice squad.
