http://www.newyorkjets.com/blog/posts/629-sh-mangini-on-favre-and-fluency 08/13 ? If Brett Favre?s progress with the Jets could be compared to a Spanish class, the quarterback would be familiar enough with the language to pass the midterm, but he is still far from fluent, according to Jets coach Eric Mangini.
?There?s a lot going in, a lot of things he?s able to associate with,? the coach said in today?s news conference. ?It just doesn?t roll off the tongue like he?d like it to. He?s been speaking another language for a long time.? But, Mangini added, Favre is able to associate concepts and understands what the offense is looking to get done on each play. The coach believes that all the signal-caller needs is time. ?That?s going to come after getting used to being in a huddle, saying it a few times, going through the walk-through and seeing it on tape,? he said. One good sign, Mangini noted, was that Favre has been making dummy audibles at the line to confuse the defense. When he is most demonstrative in his codes and gesticulations, the coach noticed, sometimes it?s ?just fluff.? Mangini also is weighing whether or not to appease the new guy by allowing him to select practice tracks. Favre spoke with the coach about possibly adding some country music to the playlist, but Mangini, who said that he will consider it, isn?t sure how many other players would appreciate rustic crooning. As for Saturday?s preseason game against the Redskins, Mangini said that he would like to play the starters longer than he did last week versus the Browns. He didn?t specify how deep into the game they would go, though. The first-team offense and defense didn?t get an ideal 50-50 split in the first quarter (the defense got the bulk of the work), so the coach would like to extend them. He added that Shaun Ellis, who has been out with a hand injury, is expected back before the season-opener but has only ?an outside shot? of playing on Saturday.
if Mangini came out and said that Favre was mastering the playbook, i'd be more worried...because he'd be feeding us a "bullshit sandwich with all the trimmings" Favre will know enough by week 1...and will continue to learn the playbook as the season goes on. Besides....the shrink wrap was just removed from the part of the playbook that houses all the deep routes anyways....Favre will be learning those plays along with the rest of Jets.
I'm confident that we'll beat Miami, but do you really think they're the same team as last year? Parcells didn't sit on his ass all off season and not do anything to improve their team. They upgraded a lot in the trenches like we did, they just didn't get the big name guys.
Miami made alot of improvements as well. The AFC east will once again be the best division in the NFL, IMO.
They had Bubba Franks on Jets Nation this week and he made a good point. He said once you get in a game it's still football and Favre has played long enough to know what he's doing. You may call a play one name or another but it's still football vs an 11-man defense.
I saw that interview. He also said Favre is picking up the offense "real quick". I don't know who to believe because Favre, Mangini and Bubba have basically said 3 different things.
I totally agree with you about them not being the same team ...but they arent close enough to be a division contender!! However, how do you feel about what Pennington will tell them about the offense ...i mean he was running it all the way up until last week...getting prepared for the Browns game. You think that will have any effect on how our offense will run and how they will play it? Im sure he is spilling his guts down there in Miami -- preparing for us wk 1 --- But i still dont see them even coming close to having a chance, because Farve is a playmaker and will find a way to make the routes work!
that's pretty funny to me the AFC-North and NFC east will both be far better divisions. Possibly the the AFC South too
I realize this is a bit of a stretch, but there is one positive to Favre learning the offense incrementally and not having the entire playbook at his disposal in Week 1. It'll make game tape study a bit less effective as he'll be adding new looks in every week. That should help against a certain AFCE rival.
Farve has enough time and he will be fine. He is a serious veteran and I am sure he can relate to any system...I just want to make sure he gets more reps with coles and the rest of em.
I'd say the AFC-East and AFC-North run pretty even. In the AFC-North, teams are either advancing or stalled. The NFC East should be interesting. I think the only thing that could/should hold Dallas back is its coaching. Or, perhaps a certain mouthy receiver.
nfc east is kind of the best division but the afc east has 2 superbowl QBs playing while the nfc east has one. dolphins are a joke bills can compete, jets are good and the pats are the pats. nfc east giants champs, cowboys good , redskins can compete, and the eagles are a joke, so its pretty much even. cowboys have to show that romo can win in the playoffs. and the north c'mon man...
Seriously, Parcells got rid of Thomas and Taylor, who both are famous choke artists against the Jets.
