    Kassell placed on IR

At the top of his news conference, Mangini did have one piece of housekeeping news that didn't involve Favre but represent bad news for the defense and special teams: Brad Kassell has been placed on injured reserve.

"With Brad, it's his right knee," Mangini said. "We've signed offensive tackle Thaddeus Coleman, so he'll replace Brad [on the roster] in the short term." Coleman, an undrafted free agent from Jerry Rice's old college, Mississippi Valley State, was cut by the Cardinals on July 31.

Kassell, meanwhile, was the first backup behind David Harris and Eric Barton at inside LB and was also a main cog on kick coverage and returns. David Bowens, the 10th year "old dog" who is learning new tricks at ILB, could move into Kassell's defensive role. Stephen Haynes will talk to Bowens and Harris and provide a report later this afternoon.

Mangini also gave the latest word that TE A.J. Schable, injured late in the win over the Browns on Thursday night, "is going to be fine. We're going to monitor him the next couple of days and make sure everything's progressing the way it needs to progress. That's good news."

Liked his effort on special teams...But could never understand why he came into the base defense at times.

I'm sad that he got hurt and his season is over.

I'm happy that I don't have to see him this year (and hopefully ever again) in a Jets uniform.

Is Barton the other ILB next to Harris in the starting lineup?

Must have been on that play where he missed the easy sack on Thursday. That's what poor technique will get ya.

Not a big loss in the grand scheme of things. Is Marques an ILB?

If he's #94, then I saw him line up on the outside.

Thank Christ. My least favorite Jet, next to Chatham.

I always view the two of them (Kassell and Chatham)as a package deal of crap. The trifecta was when Tim Dwight was on the team.

Decent player. We're really thin at LB, especially now.

We are thin at ILB, but Kassell was no help. #94, Murrell, was defintiely on the ouside but I saw the rookie Cummings from Wingate do well on the inside against the Browns. I also see we signed a guy, Philips, today who has the right size for inside (6'1'' 248).

Kassell will be missed on STs and as a backup ILB, but he's replaceable.

He's a very subpar player, but who can we find to replace him? If the Jets could have gotten that ILB that the Ravens picked up, I would feel fine right now, but we have ZERO depth at ILB right now. Chatham, a guy who barely got any PT as a backup OLB, is now our only backup ILB.

"Thank Christ" that someone blew out their knee and won't play the entire year and could have their career ended? A bit callous, no?

ok ok... I'm sorry the man blew his knee out...

That aside, I am thrilled he wont be suiting up on gameday.
