KC&C, did you watch the game last night? I thought our starting o-line was very good in pass protection. The run blocking can definitely be improved, but it was still better than last season - don't you think?
This is coming from a so-called "Chad supporter" The book came out on Pennington in the Raiders playoff game back in '02. Any team that could generate enough pressure; likely all teams we would face in the playoffs, had a better than average chance of beating us, our defense was never a dominating force. From '02 on Chad was among the best in the league in beating teams we should have beat, with a few slip up's, and not special enough to knock off the elite teams (sorry, SD in '04 was not a truly elite team, nor was Indy in '02 obviously) As a 30 yr. old Jet fan who suffered through some terrible years I was originally happy with the 10-6, maybe a playoff win performance of the team for a while, but now I want more. Fielding a team w/ Pennington as QB leads to 2 problems. 1. He can't be counted on to play 16 games + playoffs 2. Even healthy, it's doubtful that Chad can lead a team to the Superbowl when facing the likes of the Pats, Indy, SD, or Jags in the playoffs. I'll send off Chad with thanks for being a classy player, and working to return and fight through injury, and the 2002, '04, and '06 were fun to watch, but all things must end. Note: Favre has maybe 2 good years left, if Kellen cannot step up during practice/game situation this year, I hope the FO will draft a QB round 1 next year, so when he is ready this young defense we have built will be in their prime and ready to compete at the highest level. Best of luck Chad; don't go to the Patriots.
IMHO finishing 8-8 with all of the money they spent and getting Brett Favre would be a major dissappointment. The Jets have been to the playoffs 3 out of the last 5 years and have spent a ton of cash this off-season, gotten rid of what most people say is the worst QB in the league, and gotten the QB with all of the records and 8-8 is OK? No offense, but to me that just doesn't make sense. Now I've been a pro Pennington guy and wasn't in favor of getting Favre. However, I can't fault the Jets for the move because I think that the deal was very fair. The Jets didn't give up the farm for Favre and I really don't think that Clemens was all that. I think that concerns about Pennington were also a legitimate issue. That being said, it seems like some people are holding different Jets (now ex-Jets) up to a different standard here. Pennington gets the Jets to 3 playoffs and he sucks. All-world Favre comes in and 8-8 is OK. So if the Jets hadn't picked up Favre and Pennington was the QB (perhaps a big if) and finished 8-8 that would be OK too? Br4dw4y5ux, I assume that you were a proponent of the trade. If not - I'm sorry. However, if you were then I'd assume that nothing short of the playoffs would suffice (unless you thought the Jets were THAT bad)
Quote: "...The book came out on Pennington in the Raiders playoff game back in '02. Any team that could generate enough pressure; likely all teams we would face in the playoffs, had a better than average chance of beating us, our defense was never a dominating force...." Now I think there is a lot to the premise that our initial methodology as a team under BS' offensive strategy can be figured out and successfully defended against. But this is true of any system. How you run it and vary from it in response to the defense's moves is everything. Your quarterback has some limited moves he can make to do this. But I think it's really predicated on the soundness of your OL on that line of scrimmage. Without the time and the successful run as an alternative, the quarterback's options are severely disrupted, no matter how crafty or how strong he is. Our losses in the playoffs referred to here were team losses, not talent losses. If it were the quarterback's fault alone, then any fool would have replaced the bastard forthwith. The NYJs have needed to build a WHOLE team, not attract a star, to get over the hump of the playoffs. And they haven't done it. The better constructed high-chemistry teams have run over us like a sack of potatoes as a result. This year I hope will be different. This Tangini regime has been diligently working on the whole team all year long. This year they cleaned out the treasury and went for broke in every direction that fortune presented to them. Johnson, Tannenbaum, and Mangini are in lock-step building a better WHOLE team. Why not Pace? Why not Faneca? Why not Jenkins? Why not Lowery? and now, why not Brett? Okay!
Unfortunately he's right. I love you Chad and had some fun when you were here, but you couldnt get it done anymore.
You don't build playoff teams the way the Jets have operated over the last two years. You build playoff teams by materializing great value out of thin air (Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, Tony Romo), by creating excellent depth and flexibility (San Diego, New England, Dallas), by having a consistent organizational plan of proven value and sticking to it (Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Seattle) or by hiring somebody to run the show who is proven to be able to produce playoff teams on demand (Parcells, Coughlin, Holmgren). What the Jets have done over the last two years is to grasp at straws. Solid ones that they overpaid for (Revis, Harris, maybe Keller) producing even value at best over the long run due to the cost of acquisition. Weak ones that they conned themselves into giving prominent roles to (Kenyon Coleman, Adrien Clarke, Justin McCareins, Abram Elam) and now aging stars in the latter part of their careers that they hope will tip the balance (Faneca, Favre, Jenkins - and a DT with a full knee and a weight problem is a LOT older than he looks). I'm just glad that they've put enough talent together while doing all of this to not be a bad team this year.
Lets remember this guy is the all time leader in yards and touchdowns (and INT's) those are certainly not record to scoff at! All this stuff about him not being "football ready" and "out of shape" having to learn a new playbook? Yeh it's not going to be a walk in the park...but this isn't a guy we've just pulled in from NFL Europe or the CFL...it's Brett Favre one of the greatest ever. 8-8 would be a dissapointment. This roster has been improved significantly in the offseason, not just with the Favre aquisition as we should all be aware. I loved Chad to but he couldn't really take us anywhere...it's sad but most likely true.
of course it was a PR move! and it was also a football move. the two aren't mutually exclusive. the Jets are better with Favre at QB than Pennington. you can't argue that. today, Favre is a better QB than Pennington, attempting to dispute that just because Pennington led the Jets to the playoffs or is a good guy is irrelevant.
I respect your opinion, but with all due respect you should change your avatar. There is only one Jet QB who was "Broadway" and that was for very specific reasons that have nothing to do with Favre. The Jets no longer play in NYC and Favre, unlike Namath, will not be hanging out in Manhattan. Come up with something original. Use alliteration if you want, but not Broadway. It is not right to steal the moniker of the greatest Jet of all time.
Seriously. If the record is subpar, I am gonna puke if I have to read any more posts about a LACK OF TALENT ON THE TEAM.
There is a small amount of hypocrisy in it, that it is ok to make the playoffs with Favre, but not with Pennington. But Favre has gone "all the way", and Pennington has only gone about half the distance. In the end I believe this is still going to be an upgrade, even with some of the questions marks surrounding Favre. We are no worse off in the end because it does appear we were searching for a QB. The Pennington bashing is over the top by some. He's still a legitimate starting QB in this league and better than at least half the QB's already starting. With the right team he can keep them competitive, and with a little luck - who knows? Especially in the NFC.
I don't get it we replaced a physically broken down QB with a physically solid QB who a year ago was a top 5 NFL QB. Favre and Pennington will be gone with no cap hit. We have 3 young QB's on the team none of whom are ready right now. If we are lucky two will step up giving us a future starter a backup or maybe a solid trade piece. We got better at QB, significantlty better. We didn't give Favre a long term cap killing deal. We aren't throwing a young QB who isn't ready out to wreck a season where we have assembled decent talent. It's a fundamental good move that has the upside if Favre can deliver another great season of giving Jets fans some great football and maybe a serious run, maybe not but the last serious run this team had was 10 years ago and we had no shot of that with Pennington as the starter.
With all due respect, I'm going to stick with Broadway Brett. It's not intended to disrespect Namath. It's all in fun to celebrate an exciting time to be a jets fan. A lot of the media has used Broadway Brett today, the mayor of NY gave him a broadway street sign. I'm sorry if you find it offensive.
No. this was a we can't spend 140 million dollars, and be one Jarvis Green roll up from 4-12. The most important different stat between Chad, and Favre, is GAMES STARTED. Then comes arm stregnth. The fact that this team was being built as a power running team, only makes this transition easier. If we can run the ball well...How many plays does Favre need? Clearly less then he will be able to learn in a month. Picture this....3rd and 7....Huddle breaks... Keller lines up tight right...Coles,Cotchery,stuckey or clowney, Washington in the backfield... three seconds on the play clock, washington flares out wide, and favre backs into the gun... Who are you going to cover????? In 4 seconds, you could be looking at a dart anywhere on the field.....
Balderdash. Revis and Harris? Overpaid???? Generally I respect your opinons, but overpaid???? FOR HARRIS???? Put down the crackpipe. If the CS wasnt loyal to Vilma, Harris would have been the DROY,Willis barely put up better numbers and started how many more games????? And Revis???? Whats the going rate on a Veteran CB with Revis' already apparent skill? Oh......And P.S... Washington, Rhodes, two of the best players AT THEIR POSITION..... And...They seem to have learned the lesson they were missing.....(Aside from speed the ohter thing you cant coach is BIG.....) And this team has gotten BIGGER since last year, dramatically... Oh.....and one more thing ..Parcells?????? AYFKM????? Parcells is unparalleled at what he does, but riddle me this Batman.... Who trained the current GM?????
