That's just a stupid comment. I have been a fan for more than decades and a season ticket holder for 29 and I hardly embrace losing. I just happen to think that the Jets are going to peak as a team in 2-4 years and with this move will have another hole at QB right when one is needed most. First year QBs don't win Super Bowls. I hope I'm wrong and I ll be in my seats cheering for Favre with all I have. I just think its the wrong long-term move. People can have opinions. Saying your against the move means you embrace losing is assinine.
No lose deal, if Favre sucks he's gone and Clemens takes over a much more aggressively designed O. If Favre is good Clemens gets to see a QB with an arm and attacking attitude operate instead of a finesse QB. If Favre is good and the D is good we are likely to be in the mix come playoff time. If Favre sucks he is still likely to be as good as Chad or Clemens this year neither of whom had impressed anyone in TC.
umm...saying that you're against a trade that clearly upgrades a position that's been hampering us for awhile now...is assinine. Maybe you should sell your season tix to a more proactive fan...you sir, are not worthy.
I voted for the trade. We are simply a better team with him behind center. And he comes relatively cheap. He only costs a lot if he takes us to the SB and I'm certainly willing to give up the 31st or 32th pick in that case. We weren't going to the superbowl with chad of Kellen (we're probably not with Brett either) but our chances are better now.
I absolutely HATE the trade. Bringing in a superstar in the DEEP twilight of his career to be the leader of your team is not the way to win a Super Bowl. I think Clemens still has the potential to be a really good NFL QB (granted he blew chunks last season) and we have completely given up on him. The move is out of character with the front office philosophy. To date they have been preaching a building through the draft and young players. With the exception of the O-line/NT help they brought in this offseason, they have been doing this. The chances of Brett Favre having a Pro-Bowl caliber season (given the new system, new personnel, limited time with the team, and media distractions) is slim at best. I couldn't care less about the compensation....it is the desperation of the move that bothers me. Yes we will be on the back pages and ESPN every day, but that doesn't mean sh*t to me. I want this team to be the Redskins of the 80s, Cowboys of the 90s, or Pats of the 2000s....sustained success. All this move amounts to for me is a betting the farm on a single number at roulette....if it pays off great, if not you we are in a mess. And don't even get me started on what next offseason is going to be like with Mr. I-can't make-up-my-mind. I hope come Feb, people bring this post back up and I am ridiculed as we are the Super Bowl Champions. On the record - DbJ
I agree, but there is one aspect of this deal that has some downside. Bringing Favre here almost certainly means we will see less of Clemens than we would have otherwise. So much less that will we really be in a much better position to assess Clemens going forward then we were at the end of last season? Next year is Clemens's contract year, and they don't want to leave him unsigned going into the contract year, unless of course they don't intend to keep him. Part of the answer, which we don't presently know, is that the Jets may have made this move largely because they went to camp with this contest and were seeing that neither one was lighting it up. I knew Chad would not, but there had to be a hope that Clemens, being still relatively unknown, if given the real opportunity would have stepped up. It doesn't sound like that happened, even if we can't read the minds of Tannenbaum and Mangini on that. But it is certainly plausible that was a factor. That in turn would argue for not relying on Clemens going forward. If that is the case, they need to use a high pick next off season at Qb, I would think, to get someone here to be developed to take over when Favre finally calls it quits.
I was against the trade for the same reasons you and JWWS have outlined. I think our peak is 2 years away...just in time for Burt's (real) retirement. Do you think Woody went Dan Snyder on us? Do you think Tangini were just following orders? or do you think they got him to save their faces and buy some more time for the long-term solution at QB?
I think based on how shitty Clemens has been in TC thus far...that you're bang on with the paragraph i bolded in your post. I believe that would be the plan going forward....good call
What is a "proactive" fan??? I think going to every home game and posting here is pretty proactive. It's ok to disagree with a move, isn't it??? Does proactive mean I have to agree with everything the Jets do? Have you agreed with everything the Jets have done in your two years of following the team??? Why don't you argue the football points like Death By Jets above rather than making personal attacks agaisnt long time fans and members of this board because they are not drinking or are not yet ready to drink the Favre Kool Aid.
70% in favor at this point in time is pretty strong . That's about the same % as the poll on Jets Central.
Stop it. Your hurting some people's brains by actually thinking about this and analyzing things past 2009.
It's amazing how I've gone from a criticized sunshiner to a criticized darksider in one day all because I am not in favor of one move. I hope I am wrong and will pull as hard for Favre as the Jet QB as I would for anybody, but I am just skeptical.
hey Captain Negative...why don't you worry about this season instead of trying to decipher what's gonna happen 5 years from now. Brett Favre is a CLEAR upgrade over Penny/Clemens....if you don't believe that....then maybe you should follow a sport that's a little less stressful on your analytical mind...like Equestrian. Our situation was shittier with Penny/Clemens.....we bring in a 9-time pro bowler who threw 28 TD's last season.....how hard is that for you to fathom?
I'm just lost as to how upgrading A. The most important position on the football field B. The team's biggest hole Can POSSIBLY be a negative. I really don't understand it at all. Now perhaps the move doesnt become groundbreaking and we dont win an SB...but how the hell is upgrading a position a BAD thing?
First of all, of ALL 31 of those other teams didn't have a QB competition brewing as badly as the Jets had. Yeah, there's the Bears, but they knew Brett wasn't going to them. Minnesota doesn't have much of a competition going on. Jackson is their QB, but Favre would've been a quick upgrade. Again, Favre wasn't Minnesota-bound anytime soon. No other teams inquired because they have QB's or couldn't afford to have a Backup earning $12M on the bench. There are a lot of unhappy Packers fan for that. However, the organization knew this would cause a HUGE distraction and they needed to move forward. So they did what's best for the Packers and cut ties. Trust me, if Rodgers had injured himself sometime on Monday, Brett Favre wouldn't be flying in to NY today. You can believe that. Garcia SHOULD be back by Week 1. Not to mention they have Chris Simms on the roster. Garcia is better than Chad and Clemens considering the #'s he posted last season. 2003 (10-6-y): % Comp: 65.4, Yds: 3,361, Yds/G: 210.1, TD: 32, INT: 21, Rating: 90.4 ** Ahman Green: 1,883 yds ** 2004 (10-6-y): % Comp: 64.1, Yds: 4,088, Yds/G: 255.5, TD: 30, INT: 17, Rating: 92.4 **Ahman Green: 1,163 yds ** 2005 (4-12): % Comp: 61.3, Yds: 3,881, Yds/G: 242.6, TD: 20, INT: 29, Rating: 70.9 **Samkon Gado: 582 yds ** 2006 (8-8): % Comp: 56.0, Yds: 3,885, Yds/G: 242.8, TD: 18, INT: 18, Rating: 72.7 **Ahman Green: 1,059 yds ** 2007 (13-3-z): % Comp: 66.5, Yds: 4,155, Yds/G: 259.7, TD: 28, INT: 15, Rating: 95.7 **Ryan Grant: 956 yds ** 1 of those 2 terrible years came when the Packers had absolutely NO RUNNING game, the other came from the return of an already aging running back. It's no secret, Brett needs a running game to help him out, so he doesn't have to carry the team. I don't know which 6 you are talking about. Are you counting them per game? or total? Favre's last 6 POSTSEASON appearances were in '98: 2-2, '01: 4-7, '02: 1-2, '03: 3-1, '04: 1-4, and '07: 5-2. By my count, the total for his last 6 playoff appearances sums it up to 16 TD's and 18 INT's. You would too if you played in -35 degree weather. Congratulations, you may be right on this one. Or, they could have a QB who will learn from Brett Favre himself. Many whom many have pointed out some similarities in their style of game-play. By the way, what is Ainge to you? Chopped liver? ...huh?! No argument here. But he will adapt and I'm sure we will tweak the offense as well to meet some of his needs and make the transition as simple and as valuable to us. See above comment. See Chad Pennington. You must know the man inside and out. I'd love to have a beer with you and him sometime. Yeah. Gotta hand it to those "far better" teams. It's stupid teams like the Steelers and Giants who just don't know their role, always come and ruin the party, huh? God I hate those teams too. If it wasn't for them, the Colts, Patriots and Cowboys would be winning Lombardi trophies every year. You have actually stumped me with this one. I'm at a loss of words.
Long term, I think Burt sets the team back, but it is sure going to make this season exciting. Might as well sit back and enjoy the ride!:jets:
The only teams that would be interested in a 38 year old QB, as a starter, are teams with no starting QB, but enough talent to win in 2008. Those teams are the NYJ, Bucs, Vikings, and Bears. He wasn't going to a team in his division, so that left the Jets and Bucs. I love the deal. The offense will have to evolve to include more down the field passing. So when Favre is done the offense will fit Clemens skill set, assuming he's the guy. For the next 2 years we have a punchers chance to win any game. It's been 10 years since the Jets put on any semblence of an air show. It's about god damn time we do it again.
