i also really cant see how we got screwed, i think we got fair market value for vilma if not a little above. he is coming off a MAJOR injury and may never be the same. forget the fact he has not played well in our defense, oh and we have a new up and coming ilb that set the world on fire last year.... it was really a no brainer and continues to be whether we get a 2nd or 3rd for our 4th this year. thats perfectly fine with me.

the kick in the ass would be him playing well AND the giants getting a 1st rounder for that tool shockey. but hey its not about what they get or do its about what the jets do with a new defense

If I remember correctly, the 3-4 defense has two ILBs...

I heard from the Giants GM that it is possible that the Jets could get the 2nd round pick but like others have said because the Saints hold all the cards, it is a slim to none possibility that we will be able to get the condition for the 2nd round pick.

Just wanted to update you guys on this...the direct question was finally asked to Mickey Loomis:

Q: There is a report out of New York for the Shockey trade and Jonathan Vilma trade saying that if Vilma meets certain criteria that the Shockey trade would trigger a first round pick for him. Can you address that?

A: There is a contingency in Vilma’s deal that could affect our ability to give a second round pick next year. It’s unlikely, but it could happen, so consequently we had to have a contingency in our deal with the Giants to take care of the event that the other contingency took place. I think at the end of the day it will be the two and the five for what the Giants will receive. There are some contingencies.

Q: Would the contingencies trigger a first round pick?

A: I’d rather not say what it triggers. Those terms are generally undisclosed.

Q: Is Vilma’s deal based on some contingencies?

A: There are some things that are under our control and some things that are based upon his play time.

Probably the most useless interview in the history of professional sports.

All those blank spaces between the Q&A are for filling in "between the lines."

If you look closely, you can read between those lines, and it says, "No f@cking way."

i'm sorry i don't have a link (nor would i be able to post it cuz of my post count) but i live in N.O. and base on what i heard on a radio interview with the GM, and reading the local paper, the terms quoted above are correct, with one detail i haven't seen mentioned.
The Jets get our 2nd if:
    1) Vilma plays at least 85% of snaps AND
    2) signs an extension with the saints BEFORE the beginning of the free agency period this year.

The Jets get our 3rd if:
    1) Vilma plays less than 85% of snaps OR
2)Vilma signs extension AFTER beginning of FA period. OR
    3) BOTH 1 and 2 occur.

So basically the Saints do hold all cards. We won't limit his snaps b/c the saints defense was not that good last year and we need him in a big way. SO, we will probably just come to a contract extension IN PRINCIPLE and then just wait to sign it when FA begins next off season. Thus:

1)The jets would get our 3rd round pick
    2) the giants would get our 2nd

and all would work out well for all parties.

here is a website to check out: profootballtalk.com/2008/07/22/giants-could-get-a-first-rounder-for-shockey/

Like the Saints aren't going to manipulate this in their favor. Didn't they move up this past draft? What did they give to do that?

Lastly, there is plenty of speculation that Vilma's best days are wayyyy behind him

and if you are telling me that both ilb positions do the same things and need the same skill sets well i really dont have anything to say to that. bottom line is he didnt fit, he was injured we got everything you could ever ask for.

It's not gonna happen, first off 85% of the snaps is a ton, I mean he misses one game and it's gone pretty much, second unless they get a big discount it's not worth it for the saints to extend vilma, even if he has a great year and gets tons of interest they'll just slap the tag on him. I mean their UFAs are pretty unimpressive, craft, stinchcomb, henderson?
