I agree with some of the others on this thread that #28 is the only number on the Jets that is not yet retired that should be retired soon. Quick question - can we be certain that Curtis will go into Canton as a Jet and not a Patriot? I would think the Jets portion of his career was more significant to him.
8 of his 11 years were w/ the Jets, he's considered a Jet and they don't go in as members of a certain team like they do in baseball anyway.
59 also hasn't been worn since Kyle Clifton retired. 90 and 59 will probably remain unofficially retired for a while. I'm imagining 80 will as well, but I hope not. I believe they should retire 28 when Martin makes the Hall of Fame, and keep it unofficially retired until then. If the Jets were to do a "ring of honor" type commemoration, I think (in addition to the already-retired) that 88 (Toon), 93 (Lyons), 59 (Clifton), 90 (Byrd), 80 (Chrebet), 57 (Lewis), 21 (Green), 32 (Boozer), 83 (Sauer), 85 (Walker), 5 (Leahy), 82 (Shuler), and 68 (Mawae) and 30 (Fa'aola). I may be leaving a few out, but that's who I'd include.
My standard on teams retiring numbers is stricter than most. As much as I loved a guy like chrebet, to me you should have to be a HOF player to have a team retire your number. And as good as Chrebet was, he clearly was not a HOF caliber player. To me, way too many players numbers are retired by teams these days. To me, having your number retired should be something truly special and only done if you were truly an all-time great player. As a Yankee fan, I know that the yanks have retired way too many numbers and it has cheapened the meaning of the ceremony in my opinion. To me, the only jets that I saw on that list that should be retired are Curtis Martin and Kevin Mawae. (both Hall of famers in my opinion and both all time greats at their positions - and again, being in the HOF should be the FIRST qualification to have your number retired in my view)
