http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-lions-campbellarmy&prov=ap&type=lgns Army orders Lions draft pick Campbell to withdraw By LARRY LAGE, AP Sports Writer ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP)?Caleb Campbell was a day away from practicing with the Detroit Lions and taking a step toward his dream of playing in the NFL. ?He was issued a helmet, ready to go,? coach Rod Marinelli said Wednesday. Now, Campbell is closer to joining his fellow West Point graduates in Iraq or Afghanistan. The U.S. Army revised its interpretation of U.S. Department of Defense policy two weeks ago regarding soldiers playing professional sports...
That's a real shitty move by the Army. If you want to change the policy, fine, but don't dangle something in front of someones face for a few months and take it away like it was never there. Dicks.
Pretty odd - they kept insisting that everyone in the Army was okay with it, including all of the other West Pointers. I wonder where the pressure came from that suddenly changed this.
No Army had to do what they did. The army was getting killed by families of serviceman who loved ones are still in Iraq. Why should this guy be able to get out of his commitment(just because he can play a sport). Campbell should do his time in Iraq, like everyone else.
Why? Because they had been telling him for months that's what the policy was, that's why. I'm sure you'd have a different opinion if your brother was fighting in Iraq and there was a policy that allowed him to come home this week that suddenly changed last week after months of expecting him home. Like I said, if people had a problem with the policy and they wanted to change it, fine. Just don't take away from people what you've already given them - something they'd been planning on for months. They should have grandfathered people in.
Free education at West Point and then no commitment? Come on you guys are smarter than that. That guy just got one of the best educations you can get on the cuff from the taxpayer. He goes to the army next, that's the deal.
"the deal" also said he could play a professional sport and get out if he was drafted. That deal changed with no notice. edit: I don't know all the details involved here, but it's entirely possible that as an athlete he inquired about this before even signing up. Maybe he would have made different decisions over the past couple of years if he had been told differently.
I thought the rule letting him in was pretty new, but I could be wrong. If the rule was in before he committed, then it's totally not fair. This sucks for the kid though. One day away from the start of the biggest challenge of your life, and now you have to start a new biggest challenge of your life, except this time you won't get paid and you might die. Making him fight isn't the wrong thing, but doing it the day before training camp is. It's a delicate situation because Br4dw4y is right, you can't just give many kids free top-notch educations with no commitment.
just a little FYI, his assignment is as an assistant football coach either at West Point or a military prep school
The Deal changed(rather new) when alot of serrviceman famililies complain about the unfair set of circuimstances that he was able to get out of his commitment. (just because he could play a sport) Again Like the Poster said an education from West Point isn't cheap. Nobody told Caleb Campbell to go to the army. (there is no draft) He did and now its time for him to live up to his commitment. Why should countless american serviceman lives be at risk, why this guy gets to live his fantasy. IS caleb Campbell life more important than any other hero defending this country.
It has nothing to do with how important he is and obviously he's no more important than anyone else who signs up for the army. It also has absolutely nothing to do with the cost of the education that was part of the deal. The ARMY knew the deal meant that just because he could play a sport, he would be able to get out of his commitment. They knew how much the education was worth. They knew these things before ever making it an option. The ARMY should be held to their word, just like every service member must uphold their commitment. It's bullshit. They are allowed to change the deal whenever they want, but the people signing their lives away have no say?
Best take, to me, comes from blogger/Iraq Marine Corp. vet Matt Ufford. http://withleather.uproxx.com/post.phtml?pk=6448
Yes he is, the army isnt stupid and realizes that this guy wlll prob turn into nothing in the nfl but i would bet my bottom dollar that if he was a first or second round pick that he would get to play in the nfl because they realize that his potential recruiting benifit would be alot greater than just himself going into the army David Robinson says hello
Anyone can leave a service academy after his or her sophomore year without penalty. For Campbell that was in 2006, a year after this policy was put in place, so I'd be surprised if it didn't affect his decision. This change puts the Army in line with what the Navy and Air Force have always done - you have to serve two years, but after that you can apply for a release to play professional sports. That is what David Robinson did.
Anyone else remember this kid? I remember watching the draft and loving the response he from the crowd when he was drafted. Well it looks like he's finally gonna join the lions. http://blog.mlive.com/highlightreel/2010/03/detroit_lions_offer_former_dra.html
^ I'm happy to see him in the NFL. If he's running that well, he's definitely making the ST squad at the least.
He's shown you what his guns can do in the desert, now he is going to show you what those guns can do on the gridiron.
You know what? Props to the Lions brass and Jim Schwartz for offering this guy a contract and doing the right thing. He made the team two years ago, and now hes getting his shot. Hopefullt it works out for the guy. I WILL PICK HIM UP FOR MY SQUAD IN MADDEN 2011.
That would be cool to see him play Speaking of football players and the military...any chance that Pat Tillman gets his number retired across the league
