Home > The Way We Hear It ~ ~ ~ NY Jets July 16, 2008 Jenkins not the only nose tackle in Jets country Most of the talk about the outlook for the Jets? defensive line begins (and ends) with new NT Kris Jenkins, acquired via trade from Carolina. Yet the word we?re hearing out of New York is that his backup, Sione Pouha, will play a more significant role than many figured. Pouha came on strong in the second half of 2007, and at 6-3, 325 pounds, he has the size to hold up as a two-gapping nose tackle. Part of the problem for Jenkins, who?s immensely talented but inconsistent, is that he has often been out of shape and could get worn down, and Pouha?s presence will allow Jenkins requisite rest. However, the hope is that incentives written in Jenkins? contract for keeping his weight down will serve as enough motivation to keep him from ballooning. > http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/The+Way+We+Hear+It/default.htm
mmmmmm D Line Depth. There is nothing like knowing we have two capable NTs clogging the middle. Stopping the run is a possibility once again.
Not at all...our defensive line won't be as good with Jenkins out of the lineup, but Pouha is capable. This article just tells us that Pouha will be taking the field a lot to keep the very valuable Kris Jenkins fresh.
I'm capable of riding a bike in the Tour de France. But I'm not gonna ride it like Lance Armstrong. I absolutely agree Pouha in tandem with another capable DT is an asset. But the Dewayne/ Pouha combination didn't really didn't deter offenses from running the ball. And Dewayne was in the top ten of the AFC leading the tandem. I'm just thinking how would Pouha alone, if Jenkins goes down, make it any better? Pouha is capable if he proves it. Besides the Dolphins, the Jets were run at the most. I think Pouha got extra exposure because of it. If you take Jenkins out of the mix Harris and Barton are gonna have to hit the holes like madmen if they don't get picked off. That's gonna wear them down. Then they are screwed. Of course Jenkins is not injured so why am I worrying?
yeah depth on both lines is worrying. i think pouha did well at the end of last season but i'm still worried about injury.
IMO CJ is going to have a break out year as a DE spelling Ellis. There was a very short article recently saying, believe it or not, he's down to 305#. I've liked Mosely since he came out. I think he will be an out standing DE. Anyone remember the last preseason game against the Eagles when he got 3 sacks in one series
I think that Jenkins and Pouha together on the rare times the Jets are in a 4-3 formation would also be an exciting DL.
Yeah, and if Brady goes down how would the Pat's fare? Every team has issues if certain players go down they're screwed..
I like our D-line depth better than most think...who's the Pats backup NT? Who was Jay Ratliff? Who's Brandon McKinney? IMO Pouha is just as good as those guys...plus I really like Moseley, DeVito, and Brown. Our DL depth is simply unproven...the same as every other team in the NFL...
It was just a passing comment on lack of faith in Pouha matching Jenkins if the worst was to happen and missing a playoff opportunity because of it obviously. But not every team is ill prepared. Some of the best teams are the best because they have players that can fill in at the same level of their starters. For example, Giants running back Tiki Barber retires. Big Bradon Jacobs comes in and is doing well till injured and then Ahmad Bradshaw comes in and the O doesn't miss a beat. GRANTED THESE WERE UNKNOWN FACTORS THAT CAME TOGETHER but the Gints had their detractors as well. As stated in the article, 'Most of the talk about the outlook for the Jets’ defensive line begins (and ends) with new NT Kris Jenkins......' Why is that?! Because Pouha ain't Jenkins material. He may open some eyes this year. I don't know. I think it's encouraging that his role will increase. Maybe I should reserve judgement on Pouha. But as a Jets fan I am not too concerned with what other teams issues are. And as far as this article is concerned, having Pouha there possibly continuing where he left off doesn't make me less worried. Just saying.
Agreed. I think he gets overlooked far too often, but he's a good DT and, as someone else has mentioned, a good DE in a 3-4.
Denni...Pouha doesn't have to be as good as Jenkins probably will be good/might be. He's a backup. He just has to be able to do the basics of the NT role, and from what most of us saw last year he can fill that role well enough.
Didn't Pouha get injured (knee?) early in training camp last season? I'm willing to cut him some slack if he was BUT, that means that this season he has to prove that he belongs on a NFL roster.
Seriously did anyone pay attention to Pouha last year? He ate blockers...plural...when he was on the field. Thats all he needs to do to be useful too.
There were reports of him doing very well at the NT position last year, and people have forgotten that. People are acting like if he is in the game its the end of the world. The Jets have a decent #2 guy for at least one position and they don't understand that.
