Hey, I believe Lowery is going to come in an win the starting job before the season is out, maybe even by opening day. The kid was no slouch in college: He made plays, showed good hands and made tackles.

New York Jets Sign CB Dwight Lowery

July 16, 2008 -- The New York Jets have signed CB Dwight Lowery, the team?s fourth-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. The announcement was made by Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Lowery (5-11/201/San Jose State/Santa Cruz, CA), the 114th overall pick, started all 25 games at cornerback for San Jose State, intercepting 13 passes for 147 yards and one touchdown. Lowery added 315 yards and a touchdown on 24 punt returns, deflected 14 passes, recovered three fumbles and posted 92 tackles (53 solos). A two-time All-WAC selection, he set a school record with nine interceptions in 2006. He spent his first two seasons at Cabrillo Junior College, where he intercepted 13 passes in 15 games as a free safety.

I liked the Lowery selection a lot, so please don't take what I'm going to say as an attack on Lowery, but Justin Miller needs to be the starter.

Miller has all the talent in the world. His problem is between his ears. Boland had a quote in his chat the other night that was very encouraging. He said "If Miller doesn't win the #2 spot, I'll run laps around Hofstra" That tells me that what he saw during Mini camp and the OTA's indicate that Miller is playing good football.

The optimum scenario is that Revis and Miller both are lock down CB's Lowery is the nickel. On passing situations Miller and Revis shut down the two top receivers, the QB makes a hurried throw due to a big pass rush, and Lowery does what he does best. Uses his ball awareness, and big play skills, and takes it back the other way.

Lowery, where as he is a skilled ball hawk, doesn't have the ideal speed to be a starting CB. That doesn't mean he can't be a very valuable player for the Jets, and a great #3.

I like how everyone is changing their mind on this kid. It seemed like me and Scikotics were the only ones happy about the pick back in April.

    Dwight Lowery is a baller.

I have a lot of expectations of J. Miller as well. But I think we're going to see a lot of CBs on the field this year in every game -- especially if the front seven plays as well as I think they are going to. The more "happy feet" are created by our pass rush the more 'press' we'll see to take advantage of it, in my opinion. Lowery is one of my favorite signings as well, and to see him, Darrell and Justin on the field at once in 'press coverage' will be awesome, in my opinion.

This is awesome news. I myself hope Lowery can make the transition to FS at the pro-level.

If Elam and Lowery have to battle it out for that position, it will bring out the best in both players and we'll develop depth and strength for a position that some (myself included) thought was one of our biggest holes left open on defense.

Okay, now I see why we spent a 4th for Lowery. That video is sick.

I am so pumped it's incredible. Like somebody else said, maybe we've got another "Leon Washington 4th Round Steal" in this kid. Can't wait to see him at TC.
