http://walterfootball.com/offseason2008nyj.php --------------------------- I agree with the fact that Shotty is a horrible offensive coordinator and the only reason Thomas Jones even got past 1,000 yards was because all Shotty did was run the ball, I think he is kind of harsh on Jenkins considering that last I checked he was around 350-360. But I think that if the offense is this stale regardless of who the qb is I think Shotty is out of a job, more along the lines I hope shotty is out of a job
Holy shit the more I read the more I think this guy didn't watch a Jets game this season... How did the O-line not even get a mention for the offenses suckitude? I mean Thomas Jones was a guy who just had a 4.2 YPC average for the NFC SB reps...not that that means he's special but he's better than he was last year. Thumbs down...fail...sucks too cause I usually respect Walters...but this is so poorly written.
Correction The jurors still out on Little Marty as an Offensive coordinator. Hence you wouldn't have seen the Jets bring in a Bill Callahan.(clear sign that his job might be in jeopardy) NO doubt Little Marty supprised alot o teamsd with his gimmicks in his first year. Those gimmicks didn't work as well in his second season.
^ I agree with you that the jury is still out on shotty, but the o-line he was working with was pretty bad with Clarke and Clement on it. This year should give us a better indication as to what he's able to accomplish as a coordinator.
First off the juror still out, on how much better that rebuilt oLIne is going to be. (on Paper . (thats another topic) For arguement sake, lets say the oline is as good as alot of Jet fans thinks it will be. Jets offense does alot better. NOw is Little Marty going to get the credit, or is Bill Callahan . JMO Little Marty was put in a no win situation, by the Jets.
So we can't hire a guy who's known for his O-Line skills just because he's available? Keep looking for things.
I think raiderblow thinks, because Callahan was once apart of the raiders, that he is great or considered great, when in reality he is the offensive line coach!
Bill Callahan last time he was an OLine coach, was with The Eagles.(believe 1997) Your crazy if you think hes not there to help Little Marty with the offense. (give his input) When callahan was Raiders offense coordinator under Gruden. Gruden let him call all the running plays. Callahan you can bet was hired to improve Jets running game. Callahan a big believer in a true FB- probably why they went out and signed t Richardson.
THe diffrence is I know what Im talking about, and you don't. Keep believing Callahan was hiried to be just the oline coach. Jets FO weren't happy with the direction the offense wsas going in Shottenheimer second season. Reason they brought in a season Offensive coordinator, to give Marty Shotteheimer a hand.
He's going to need to be a lot better this year... Good OL, bad OL, or 2007 Jets OL, it doesn't matter- an offense is not going to be successful when people who don't intensively study film of the team know the play as soon as they see the Down, Distance and formation.... 1st and 10, or 2nd and 6-10, Single HB, 8 yards deep. TE right. Slot WR or TE comes in motion, from right to left, settles behind LG. Ball is snapped. That was a handoff to the tailback in the 3 hole (sometimes cut back inside to the 1) EVERY TIME.... Hell, even CBS was aware enough to figure it out by week 13... If we have a single back 8-9 yards deep, we run 96% of the time, or something like that... Unless you just simply overmatch your opponent, you cannot be consistently successful on O being that predictable. I like a lot of Schotty's play designs, and a few of the wrinkles I've seen in his schemes, but his in-game playcalling needs a LOT of improvement...
One of the questions I think BS had trouble with for virtually every game last season was 'So, what are we doing well against these guys?" Without a good answer to that one, the pass rush takes over, and it's regularly three and out.
Walterfootball is the worst source for predictions on the planet. And there are some whoppers out there, but this one is the ultimate in bad as far as skewering the Jets.
Considering this commentator, it really makes me feel pretty good about the NYJ's underdog status. The more people destroy expectations of our team, the better it will probably be for our team when the games start. Us against the world.
can't argue about what raiderjoe posted. callahan is definitely here to provide a spell check to the entire offensive unit - not just the off. line IMO - the jets should be much improved in the running game. ball control with the run and taking the proverbial shot with the pass. sounds like either QB could do well with this game plan. the problem is opposing defenses know penningtons ceiling, they have no idea about clemens. i do believe we will be pleasantly surprised with clemens - especially the 2nd half of the year. jil
