In 1965, Namath was drafted by the jets #1 and was also drafted by another team #12 in the same draft. Who was the 'other team'?
Other notable guys who got drafted by teams in each league- *Dick Butkus- Bears, Broncos *Gale Sayers- Bears, Chiefs *Fred Biletnikoff- Raiders, Lions Tommy Nobis- Falcons, Oilers Matt Snell- Jets, Giants Walt Garrison- Cowboys, Chiefs Mike Garrett- Chiefs, Rams Otis Taylor- Chiefs, Eagles Daryle Lamonica- Bills, Packers Marty Schottenheimer- Bills, Colts *Mel Renfro- Cowboys, Raiders *Buck Buchanan- Chiefs, Giants *John Mackey- Colts, Jets *Herb Adderley- Packers, Titans Gary Collins- Browns, Patriots Tom Matte- Colts, Titans *Fran Tarkenton- Vikings, Patriots Don Perkins- Colts, Titans (only played for Cowboys) Willie Richardson- Colts, Jets *Pro Football Hall of Famer Had the Jets been able to sign Mackey and Adderley they might have won a couple Super Bowls.
Cool list. Its weird to think that a couple signings go a different way, and history could be very different.

The future is bright (gets hit by asteroid). synonyms: Why me?!, Fffffffffffff! antonyms: glory, calm, happiness
so what happened when two teams drafted the same player? were the cards compensated when willie joe opted for the jets? just curious.
When JWN was drafted there were 2 seperate leagues each holding its own draft. JWN opted for the NYJs over the SLC so the SLC 1st round draft pick in that round was lost forever. Think of it as a #1 draft choice that turns into the bust
While I do not remember it is quite possible that the AFL draft was earlier then the NFL draft was in 65 & it would be even further possible that JWN was signed by the NYJs even before the NFL draft occurred. If that was the case then the SLC took a "flyer" on him hoping that the the AFL would fold up making them look real smart with there selection of JWN even though he may have already signed by us
If I'm not mistaken a lot of the NFL teams shied away from JWN because they new the Jets were going to offer him a ton of money, plus he had a bad knee injury his senior year. Still, it's kind of surprising that the Cardinals would waste a first round pick on a player they weren't serious about trying to sign.
OK thanks so then the rush was on between us & the Cards who was going to sign him 1st. I guess Wberlin out bid the Cards GM
