The Jets need to make an example of Chris Baker otherwise this sort of crap will continue in future years. Get what you can out of him and then replace him in the starting lineup as soon as Bubba and Keller learn the offense. Then send his ungrateful butt home and pull the same thing Tampa Bay did with Keyshawn. Just punishment for a lying piece of crap like Baker.
didn't we make an example of Kendall? at the same time, trading Baker would be giving in to his trade demand. I'd say keeping him and benching him or cutting play time drastically might be more demonstrative.
I don't think you read my post correctly. We should NEVER trade Baker. We need to make an example of him. Better than limiting his time is sending him home and giving him NO PLAYING TIME AT ALL.
Actually, I think this is an interesting issue that could deserve it's own thread. I believe there was a time when contract issues and on-field management issues were somewhat exclusive to each other at some point, but at the same time I think it's up to the player to show up for work. If they sit out the season due to a contract dispute, it's not the team doing the benching, it's the player. I don't think you will find too many examples of a team disciplining a player for holding out. Now, for going to the press about team matters, we have already seen the team discipline Baker for this.
that would serve the purpose of making an example for him. My only concern is: You are giving up a roster spot to someone who will get little or no playing time. Thats not good.
They can't do what they did to Kendall. Then every player will just whine and complain so they're traded to a team that will pay them. Terrible precedent.
Easier said than done. We have a first round pick who is really a third Wr and a old T/E in Franks that has been on the decline with Brett Farve throwing to him. The Last time I checked the refusal to give Pete Kendall 1 Mil wrecked our season and made us give Faneca money that could have been spent on alot of other needs we have on the team.
Baker seems to not know he has no one in his corner about this situation and is completely agent-driven. I'd love to see a trade for him and get a nice 3rd/4th rounder in either the 09 or 2010 draft. Unless he shuts up and goes back to work.
i don't think thats allowed anymore.i believe there was something in the new cba that protects players from being keyshawned
Please dont ever compare Kendall with Faneca. They are not comparable. Faneca will make the whole OL better than ever. Kendall was an ok player but a cancer in the club house AND NOT A LEADER. I agree that we made a mistake with Kendall, not by keeping him, but it was made but not replacing him properly before we kicked his ass out the door. Further, do not compare impact of not having Baker versus the impact of not having Kendall. Without Kendall our offensive line was poor because his replacement sucked. We have good enough TEs to make it, and if the rookie learns fast, Baker will be gone next year anyhow.
Actually, the example they will set is making him third string. Good luck getting a contract after that.
They need to be successful doing that if they do it. If they lose with Baker on the bench then GL getting a job Eric Mangini.
The problem is the rookie can't block and Franks is on borrowed time. Im not comparing Faneca to Kendall at all but the fact remains if Mangold, Faneca or D'brick goes down we are back to the same mess as 2007 and our first round draft pick is a horrible blocker so he can't pick up the slack baker did last year. We could not sign O-line depth because of the amout we have to pay Faneca. Faneca is a fantastic player but Keeping Kendall for 1m and having the money to sign another Cb and some Oline dept might have been a better move for us.
i really dont think its necessary to "punish" or make an example of chris baker. i can tell you it sure didnt work last year with kendall. he ended up getting his trade. and did we really get proper value for him? i also dont have a tremendous amount of faith in the bubba franks/keller situation at te at this point. the fo needs to at least bring him in and try to make nice with him, clear the air, figure out whats at the bottom of this whole thing and not let it blow up as it has really begun to do, hopefully it doesnt get blown up like last year. guys face it this isnt pop warner football where a coach can be a dictator and tell little kids exactly what to do when to do it. thinking that you can be that dictator in the nfl at this point is suicide.
some have really come up with some true hatred for a guy who has played quite well and improved every year for the last 7 years. there arent too many on this team that you can say that about, yet this guy gets crucified.
