I'm kind of torn on this. Yes, it sucks that they haven't included those former players in more events and whatnot.......but at the same time, you hear professionals today comment about how this game is a business. Why does Woody Johnson need to send these guys annual Christmas Cards? I mean really...
and the AFC might never have joined with the NFC, or at least have gotten the respect it did, if not for them. Should every team in the AFC be sending those players annual Xmas cards?
That is just plain ignorant, they were Jets. Is every AFC team the Jets??? Also all of the respected owners, players and coaches of those AFL teams at that time did pay homage to the Jets for breaking through. But as an organization, the Jets need to take care of their own. To look at what other teams are doing in regard to your players is a ridiculous point to make.

I don't think the Rangers are a very good example. They carted Eddie, Gilbert and a couple of the other old guys out there for the '94 era retirements... Graves and that 80's leftover abomination Ron Duguay are employees of the team.
no sweat. And no, it wouldn't hurt. I met the right tackle from that team, Dave Herman, at the Jets playoff party in '06. He was really kind and took a photo of me with him and his ring showing. I'm sure most, if not all of the players, would love to be more involved with things like that.
Woe, I'm talking about retiring numbers and honoring players here. Gilbert was the First and then Eddie, they honored Howell why he was still playing but never did anything for anybody else until the recent '94 cup guys Richter, Messier and Leetch all well deserving. I love Graves and if you take into account all he did/does off the ice for the organization then I can see honoring him, but he is far from a hall of famer, while Howell, Bathgate and Patrick are. The league even has an award named in honor of Lester Patrick, who was a pioneer to hockey a Rangers player and coach, yet the Rangers have nothing for these guys not even a plaque that is piss poor in my opinion. There is no excuse for that these guys and Greschner should all be honored in some way especially if you are going to retire Graves' is number. I heard Bathgate will also be retired with Graves, it's about time, but they really should get Howell's 3 and maybe even Gresch's 4 up there too, or at least honor them in some way some where in The Garden.
The line between honoring players and watering down the meaning of a retired number is tricky. As an individual, Gresch is definitely more deserving of being retired than Graves... but... Graves won a cup. Graves' honor I think was assisted by being a big community guy off the ice and and a source of positive press for the Rangers. I wouldn't mind seeing Bathgate's number retired. I just don't want us to become the Yankees in the retired number department. PS Sorry for the hi-jack.
Me either, but it is really hard to justify retiring Graves number over Howell, Bathgate, and Patrick, they are hall of fame rangers. Graves is not, and Gresch held all those records Leetch broke, so if Graves deserves it so does do they. I think I read on the Rangers site that Both Graves and Bathgate's #9 will be retired. That is great but Howells #3 should have been the first to go up there once he retired, they dropped the ball on that and should fix it like they are doing for Bathgate.
I'm 21 and I don't really care about Namath or the SBIII win and I didn't become a jets fan because of an older relative jets fan. Maybe I'm the minority, but I seriously don't care if they send the old players christmas cards, this article means nothing to me and I really think you guys are just arguing because you have nothing better to do during the offseason. If I never heard about SBIII again I wouldn't care. You don't hear Vikings fans talking about Fran Tarkenton or winning the 1969 NFL championship game because all that stuff happened decades ago and there's barely anyone around who still remembers or cares.
I'll let your comments slide because you are still a kid but I'm nearly 30 and I care about that SB Championship. It's all we as fans of this team have and a large majority of us weren't even born yet. I was 10 years away from life and in the 40 years since then we've failed twice to get back to the SB. And Viking fans still talk about Fran Tarkenton and that 1998 team that was probably as good if not better than this years Pats team. It's not about Christmas cards; it's about embracing the one moment in the history of the franchise that shocked the world. If we had other championships it might be different but this is all we have. I don't care what these guys think about our QB situation but Woody should have already had some type of ceremony honoring these guys. I was at the one they had in 93 and as a teenager I didn't understand but years later when I think about the grown men I saw crying I understand. We may not ever win another Super Bowl so these guys should be more than a name in the media guide.
That is odd b/c I have always felt we spend too much time looking back at SB III. I guess they do that for the fans but don't actually do anything for the players?
It's almost 40 years and these guys are getting upset over a Christmas card. Should we parade them out every year? Not sure what to do with players from so long ago.
Uhhh, his business is not football, yes he owns the team, but made his millions elsewhere. He would probably just own another team.
Damn, No wonder we haven't won a SB in nearly 40 years, Woody doesn't freaking send Christmas cards to the team that did. What a disgrace Woody is, I really hope one day we can get an owner that really knows what it takes to win a SB.
