I hadn't seen this anywhere before and couldn't find a post on it. The Jets could end up getting nothing even if Robertson is effective, given the way the Broncos rotate d-linemen. Full article here http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/may/17/no-cooling-his-jets/
Shanahan is a snake...Robertson will be highly effective for the Broncos but will be pulled from the game as soon as it goes one way or the other. The Jets will get nothing. What one d-bag on the Broncos site wrote: "I see Robertson and Thomas starting with McKinley and Powell rotating. Now if you figure there are 70 offensive plays per game, Robertson would have to play 49-50 to owe the Jets a third rounder (70%). I hope McKinley and Powell are go enough to play half the downs and give the Jets nothing."
if we get nothing we're still way ahead. Losing that salary and a guy who was Boobway's worst pick ever is a plus.
I like the positive thinking! It does look, however, like the Jets had to basically give him away to get someone to take him off our hands. I'd hate to get nothing for him.
Exactly. It was either cut him and get nothing or trade him and possibly get something. Seems like an easy decision to me ...
Agreed. DRob was a decent player at times. With his salary and the long term knee issues...it's absolutely amazing that we might get a 3rd for him with some luck.
He should have been cut if they were not going to get anything for him which is what will probably happen. The jets got a bad deal. If he plays as much any other lineman, they should have gotten at least a fifth rounder. That should have been the negotiating point and not we are going to get rid of him which they could have done by cutting him. Now you can bet that the next time the broncos want to do a deal with the jets they are going to expect a sweet deal for them.
If they cut him they are assured of getting nothing. With this trade there is at least a chance of getting something for him. Beside the fact that if he shows dominance going back to the 4-3 I think the Broncos are not going to have a choice but to play him as much as they can and worry about what they will give up later. Do you really think they are going to say, OK he played enough today, we don't want to have to give up any draft choices, get him out of the game.
lets hope he stays healthy all season , and there other d-linemen get hurt, also getting rid if that huge contract was gratifieding enough
were prob not going to get nething but even so, id rather have the chance of getting a 3 instead of getting a 7 and then having that guy promptly cut at TC
Yes I do think they would do that actually. Coachs have been doing that forever.. I can think back to Jimmy Johnson and the cowboy's scenario, but I am sure it probably goes back to teams doing that even further back then him.
If we get something, we get something(i hope). If we don't get anything, at least we lost the salary.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't the cap hit exactly the same whether you trade a guy or just cut him?
No once you trade him he is gone and becomes the other teams hit, if you just cut him you get stuck with a portion of his salary against your cap. Big difference.
I'd imagine that the Broncos did the math before making the trade and have a pretty good idea of how many plays Robertson can play without giving up that 3rd rounder. I think this kind of stuff is thought of all the time. In fact I'd say it would be irresponsible for any team's GM to not think up these kind of hypothetical situations.
