Chrebet favorite moment his entire rookie year- it was the only thing enjoyable about that Jets season least favorite moment the leap and fumble in Champaign in 2002 Martin favorite moment Week 1 vs Cincinnati in 2004 A blogger ripped Martin all summer, said he was done, and I told him Martin was going to have one more great season and maybe even lead the league in rushing. Things looked great when Martin put 196 yards on Cincinnati's ass. least favorite moment fumble against Dallas in 2003 and Denver in AFC Championship Game
Cherbet may have been a fan favorite but this one isn't even close. Martin was the # 1 RB for more than a decade while Cherbet was the # 1 WR for one, maybe two years. Also, Cherbet didn't even get close to the pro bowl even once. Martin was one of the top three running backs (possibly the best) to wear a Jets uniform while Cherbet would be lucky to break to top five at WR.
Not fer nothin', plinko, but if he was Black Rudy, I'd feel exactly the same. Especially in a town like NY, I can't see your sentiment holding much water. In fact, I think it would be the opposite if anything.
Neither. If you are going to retire a number it HAS to be Namath in my opinion. If you want to go to a second number I think that is Klecko. If I had to choose between Martin and Chrebet, I would choose Chrebet. I know that Martin is #4 in rushing but Chrebet is more important as a Jet in my view.
jeto, I appreciate your sentiment, but we'll have to disagree on this point. Obviously being a local product and going to a local school and being a walk on have something to do with his popularity. But he's easily most popular Jets player to everyday regular fans (not crazy football nutjobs like us).
i think the second number should be Martin, then all of the sack exchange then Bruce Harper. He was a third down back before they coined the phrase.
Well, since I don't think Chrebet's number should be retired at all, this is pretty easy. It's great being a fan favorite and all, but I am of the belief that you only retire the numbers of great players, and Chrebet was never one of those. When you add in that the team never even made it to the Super Bowl with him on the team, the entire idea strikes me as pretty silly.
I'm with you. As nice a tribute as you can get, there must be other ways of honouring athletes. I think the whole retirement thing is absurd.
I look at that as a bad Testaverde moment, rather than a bad Martin moment. Yeah, I understand that if the handoff was clean and Martin secured the ball, Testaverde would have just stood there and would not have ruptured his Achilles tendon.
