This controversy will not end until some time after Chad finally gets cut. Even if Clemens is chosen as the starter, even if he does well, the controversy will continue.

I realize this. But couldn't this article have been posted in the 100 other Clemens vs. Chad or QB threads? This topic has been revisited ad nausem on the board and in the media.

And will continue to be until the QB question is truly answered. I don't like the same argument over and over again but it's the biggest problem you can have on a football team.

Granted and I completely agree. But I just don't see the need to have dozens of threads on the same subject just because people think they have some profound revelation (which someone has probably had already) or they find one of a million newspaper articles written on the subject. Why not just post in the many many many QB related threads that already exist? I just find it rather tedious and tiresome.

It's better and more interesting than what we have had in the past, in my experience. I understand your frustration, but Chad versus Kellen doesn't hold a candle to Ty Law Mania. He's a fuckin 99 in Madden, dude.

I remember that. Who posted that? I wonder if he/she is still around and realize they are a permanent point of ridicule on TGG.

It's all a disaster. Sad thing is, it is going to get worse once June 1st cuts rolls around and there are a hundred "We need to sign..." threads.

The answer to our QB problems. Starter - Lucas, backup - Chrebet (come on everyone loves him), and bring back Namath as the 3rd.

Lucas, Chrebet, Namath. Now THAT is a kickass QB lineup. WooHoo!

I can't remember who it was, but when Petro mocks you by putting your post in his sig, that's a TGG death sentence.

I think we should try to trade Chad and a low-round pick to Tampa for Garcia.

Actually, Clemens is the starter. Period. The Jets will trade or cut Pennington.

Yeah, but the problem with Ainge is that he doesn't have that "wow" factor.

    Chad / Kellen Ad Nauseam

Admittedly, I?m an Oregon fan and therefore a Kellen homer, so take this with a grain of salt. Not surprisingly, I believe Kellen should win the job in 2008. Neither QB tore it up last year, which says a lot more about Chad than Kellen IMHO. The QB is impacted by his supporting cast on both sides of the ball more than any other position and Jets were woeful in a lot of areas last year. Very few QBs can win games on their own. I think the Jets have upgraded the O-line which should help the running game big time and by extension the passing game. I still think the Jets lack a big time playmaker and speed on offense, especially on the outside, but the offense will improve if Jones and company have more holes to run through.

Both Chad & Kellen had similar numbers in 2008, if you only account for games where the QB played a significant role. Under this scenario, Kellen played 7 games and Chad 9. Here?s how their stats compare:

    Kellen
    3-4 Record
    66.8 Rating
    52.9 Comp %
    5 TD
    7 INT
    6.3 YPA
    11.9 YPC
    204 Passing Yds / Gm
    17.9 Points / Gm

    Chad
    1-8 Record
    86.4 Rating
    68.8 Comp %
    10 TD
    9 INT
    6.8 YPA
    9.9 YPC
    196 Passing Yds / Gm
    15.8 Points / Gm

Other than completion %, two stats stand out between these guys, QB rating and yards per completion (YPC). Chad was is in the middle of the pack compared to other NFL QBs in terms of QB rating whereas Kellen was near the bottom yet Kellen won more games in less starts than Chad. QB rating is greatly impacted by completion %. If Kellen increases his completion % to 60%, his QB rating jumps to 75.6 and conversely if Chad?s decreases his to 60%, his rating drops to 75.4. If Kellen increases his completion % to 60% and reverses his TD and INTs, his QB rating jumps to 83.1. There?s no doubt in my mind that Kellen can do both of these things in 2008 and that will lead to more points and success on the field. Kellen was the most accurate QB in the history of Oregon football when he graduated (I realize that there?s a big difference between college and the pros).

YPC is an important stat because Kellen can make more plays down the field. I?m not talking about the bombs, but instead deeps outs, seems, curls etc. These midrange plays put more pressure on the D than the underneath stuff that Chad relies on. Kellen ranked 9th among NFL starters in YPC. Chad ranked 2nd to last ahead of Brodie Croyle.

Chad was a promising QB until he hurt his arm. Maybe he needs more time to mend and he can improve him arm strength, but that?s yet to be seen. Conversely, Kellen just needs experience. He needs reps. He needs to make mistakes and learn from them. I think it?s a huge disservice to Kellen to not give him the most reps in practice this summer. Chad knows the game. He?s plug and play IMHO. Giving more reps to Kellen will benefit him much more than it will Chad. I don?t know the pressures upstairs on the coaching staff and GM in terms of winning now. If the Jets must win now, then Chad should probably start because of his experience. If the long term is more important then hand the ball to Kellen.

On a side note, I think Kellen was one of the toughest QBs I?ve ever seen play. He played behind a bad line at Oregon until his senior year. He took shot after shot and always got up. He?s not afraid to take a hit in order to make a play. I also think he?s more effective out of the shotgun, so if the Jets brain trust knows anything, they?ll find ways to run more shotgun with Kellen at the helm.

This paragraph says alot and I remember this was the consensus about him until last season. He can take a hit and can stare down the field and get hit hard.

The shotgun thing is interesting, because Chad sucks in the shotgun, and the playbook is tailored to Chad and his strengths. If schotty puts more shotgun schemes into the playbook- Kellen could do better with the line and whats drawn up for him as well.

Pennington's days as Jets QB are over.

    wesmith2001Blog on Thu May 15, 2008 09:39 pm

A quarterback that can not complete the 15 yard out to the opposite hash on a line can not play in todays NFL. Pennington has shown he has the heart of a lion but the arm of a chicken. It is too bad because he is a great young man. But he no longer has the arm strength to compete.

I think this is the best idea yet...merge all the QB threads and when new info comes out...put it in that thread. Like the presidential primary thread, all the info in one place:up:
