Kellen had a win vs the mighty Dolphins and a win vs the might Chiefs. big whoop. And if we're going to play shoulda - coulda Chad should have won against the Bengals except the defense let him down. On a side note, the Jets won against the Chiefs and Steelers in spite of Clemens not because of Clemens. I'm pretty sure we've already been over this once before
Arguments about 07 games and the skill players are just losing propositions -- nobody will be satisfied with any outcome, no matter what it is. Those guys who are still mad as hell and don't want to take it any more, will just have to bust their teeth. The CS and the FO are going to do what they believe is right -- and they are probably not going to ask us what we think, mainly because they don't want to insult our ignorance.
i would prefer a starting qb who can throw a spiral more than 7 yards. defenses cannot stack 8 or 9 guys in the box if they have to defend the whole field, especially deep areas and out patterns. why spend money on the ol line then be unable to run the ball? basically, anybody but noodle arm.....
It's pretty easy to defend the field if your pass rushers get to the passer before the WRs get five yards off the line of scrimmage. It takes some time, even for the fastest possible WRs, to allow the pass routes to break open. Longer routes take more time -- that's a truism, it can't be changed. If you wonder how Randy Moss always gets open, just take a look at how many seconds Tom Brady has to get his feet set and wait while Randy does his thing to get open. Usually, it's about 5 to 6 seconds. If you wonder why your whipping boy with that mangy noodle arm of his doesn't get the ball down to his receivers forty yards away, check out that 1.8 seconds he gets before the pass rushers push his face into the Field Turf and start laughing their asses off. See -- even your hero, Mr. Tom Brady, had a little trouble when his OL failed to stop the NYGs. As good as Tom Brady was -- and he was head, shoulders, and knees above most everybody else in the NFL last year -- he still got smacked 23 times and sacked five times, and the poor superstar never could seem to close on more than 14 points with all the major offensive weapons he had at his fingertips. All the skill players be damned -- the OL got whipped by the DL, and the Skill Players just had to watch it helplessly. You think there is a chunking Savior, and there is basically a poor schmuck running for his life back there. I guess you're planning to pile on again, too, eh?
I think it's ignorant to lay down and believe every single move is part of some 'master plan'. Tannenbaum already said in an interview that they made mistakes last offseason and they're trying to correct them. It's a fool's errand to believe that they won't make mistakes again, even as soon as this year.
Yeah, Abysmul, nobody says the CS and FO are infallible. But they got the keys to the car, and they have the best intel, so second-guessing them at this early date is a fool's errand -- even if they do prove out to be wrong on some things this time next year. Those guys have us fans at a distinct disadvantage -- either they are bigger schmucks than we are, or they deserve their paycheck. Let's cut them a bit of slack and see what happens. It should be fun.
Well, I said I'd get back to the OP on page 6.... I chose Clemens. It's idiotic to even consider Ainge as the starter in 2008, and starting Pennington will do nothing but delay the progress of the franchise... I've been through it a lot, so I'm not going to go into detail as to WHY, but it is clear to me that if we are trying to build for a successful future, Pennington needs to take a seat on the bench
Clemens. It's time we move on. I liked Pennington alot and wished his arm had gotten stronger, but he's proven we have to look for his successor now. Clemens deserves at least a full year to prove himself, and if he doesn't have a good season, then we need to re-assess the qb position again and see what we have with Ainge. Waiting more than two years with QBs is just too long.
If Chad could not make all the throws, including the deep posts and the medium out patterns he would not be in the league and certainly would not be one of the lead candidates in the infamous QB competition we have this summer. THAT IS A FACT. You have to understand the coaching staff sees what he can do in practice every day during the season and we dont. We get to see what he can do under duress and running for his life, which was the same story for both Chad and Kellen last year and clearly wasnt pretty.
It is not a fact. And, you just compared practice and training camp to real-live NFL games..... nice.
As a 53 year old slightly overweight but still somewhat athletic and in good shape I appreciate a guy like Chad starting in the NFL. It gives me hope that I could still play QB in the NFL, maybe even pitch in the WS? My dream of emulating Seaver and Namath in a big moment continues primarily because Chad is starting for the NY Jets. You have to love the fact that the Jets QB might not get picked to play in a Central Park touch Football game as the QB because his arm isn't good enough, but how many years are the Jets going to continue the experiment? As wonderful as Chad is, an NFL QB still has to throw the football!
I said this in another QB thread.... I’ve noticed a trend that has been going on amongst Jets fans these past two seasons. It seems lately there are two types of fans. There are the Chad Supporters and then there are those calling for the Clemens Revolution. If there’s one thing I hate hearing, it’s "Chad dosen’t have an arm". When people say that, I feel like they’re just completly ignorant to how our offense works. Laverneous Coles said it best during an interview with the Post last year in the middle of the teams struggles, "The people who criticize Chad don’t know the game of football.". The philosophy of our offense is to use short, safe passing routes and balance these with a strong running game. This is where people usually say, well we do that because of Chad’s arm strength. No that’s not why. The object is to control the ball for long periods of time and march methodically down the field. With a good offensive line, Chad’s intellegence and precision helps him flourish in this system.
Yes, ball control- its been around for 8 years. Most of us here are tired of it because its only gotten the Jets so far... and to look at other teams with a slightly more vertical passing game makes you kind of want that. The problem has now stemmed from last years examples of Chad throwing pick 6's at the most crucial point during the game- the end of it. To watch him drop back, with time may I add, and throw an out route to a CB as if it were aimed at the defender himself makes the frustration and anger grow. We know what Chad is capable of, and for the exception of a select few, had full faith in him during and after 2006. But the heartbreak of last year is the final nail in the coffin for wanting him to take control of the offense again. Its more or less a "ball and chain" theory now. Most of us feel its time to break the chains that bind us.
Well, there is a reason why Kellen couldn't get onto the field while Chad was playing terribly last year until they had no choice. And when Kellen finally got onto the field in a real live NFL game he was horrible.
Don't know what you have until they get out there.... But then again, the top 5 QBs in the league would have been top 15 guys behind our line.... our Qbs were top 28 guys with our line- which means its time to find a brand new franchise QB.
That's true to an extent that they don't know what they had in Clemens until he got onto the field. But they did see him in practice every day, and if he was meeting their expectations he would have been giving the starter duties earlier. But you are also correct in that our OL was terrible last year. I want to see this QB competition because I want to see how Kellen and Chad perform with a new line and in the heat of battle for the job. I still hold out a glimmer of hope for Kellen some where deep inside my Pennington jersey wearing heart that he is our answer at QB. But he needs to earn it and shouldn't be just given the job in 2008.
I agree to that, if he can't win it outright then either he really sucks or Chad has returned to at least 06 form- which is good for 8-10 wins. If Kellen doesn't make it, then its really time to go get that new QB- i'm hearing about Stafford and Painter next year. Purely hypothetical-- we finish with a top 18 pick in the draft, i can see us getting a QB in the 1st round.
I totally agree with this statement. Chad is a good qb with the right situation but Kellen is the future now. If he doesn't pan out then we have the best backup in the league to come in. But moving forward I would like to see Kellen, if Chad beats him out fair and square and Mangini thinks he is the best thing for the team than I will trust in his opininon and in Chad as well.
