and if Jones rides pine, then we still need to get a RT. which means we'd have to spend two picks on LT and RT. whereas Jones starts LT, then we only need to spend one pick on LT (the other on a G or C at some point). drafting Brick to upgrade over Jones while demoting Jones to the bench is the least efficient move we can make. cheers
OK well I don't agree with Mel. He's been wrong before and besides this is his opinion. Mine is that we need Defense at 4 and we can take mangold at 29 and if by some miracle either maroney or addai is there when we pick in the 2nd rd. then that would be a hell of a draft.
I never agree with Mel also. But this team isnt going anywhere and if you think 9-7, no playoffs is good... oh well. But I think that is a failure so this team can draft BPA regardless of position. Not many of the current players will be on the team in 2008. If we can get an elite prospect at a certain position I say go for it, there becomes a threshold though. Around rnds 3-7(they rarely become starters, just look at past drafts any team) you can get deph/potential needs. Also its not we drafted this position blah blah its we drafted the best player at this position.(dont make me use this example) B thomas draft..........I wanted Lito Sheppard yeah he made the probowl but everyone remembers Ed Reed
Am I crazy but a lot of people on this board act as if the difference b/w LT and RT is like the difference b/w LB and QB. So Jones is a perfectly capable LT (the more demanding and valuable position) but he has no business at RT? Hard for me to believe. That said I'm not all that thrilled about Brick, I'm ok with Hawk (or Mario) but also would be fine with trading back and taking Justice. Please please no RB at any spot unless we can steal someone in the 3rd. no value in those guys in the first or early 2nd.
I'm drooling just thinking about that. Plus maybe AJ, since he's dating Brady QUinn's sister, can convince him to say he's only going to play for the Jets in 07' jk.
Maroney probably won't be there but I got my fingers crossed for Addai. His 40 time really made his stock soar, so you never know.
i would love to get him but i am a lil concern on his durability. i think he is the least durable out of the top quality RBs
you don't huh? I do. That totally closes us down. We need a center to anchor the oline, and maybe a right guard or tackle that can be taken in the later rounds. at 4 it has to be BAP.
....1st off, Marino dropped because of the major concern for his knee injury(similar to CMart dropping to the 3rd rd), we really wanted Farve bad (and were a fraction away from getting him), but the Falcons traded to 1 spot ahead of us to get him,.... ....and I havve major concerns about Young being a top pro, actually all the highley-rated QB's have been a big gamble in recent years....
Under that rationale, the Jets should just give up their draft picks. No QB is needed - what are we going to do with Pennington and Ramsey? No RB is needed - we have Martin, Blaylock, Houston and Askew. We are set at WR with Coles, McCareins, Cotchery and Dwight. Now that Baker signed and with Jolley and Dreesen, tight end is not an issue. The DL is set, what with Ellis and Thomas at end and Robertson, Pope, Pouha at DT. We have LBs galore with Vilma, Hobson, and Barton. CB is overloaded with Dyson, Barrett, Miller and Strait. We also have an abundance of safeties with Rhodes, Coleman, Washington, and Maddox. In fact, I can't believe this team didn't win the SB last year!!! The concept that Jones is such a valuable asset that we should pass on a franchise LT is an ridiculous as saying that the Jets should pass on Williams because Thomas is coming into his own at DE or that we should avoid RB because Houston is clearly a future star. If you can upgrade, you upgrade - especially when you are filling a hole at a key position and replacing a 4th round pick who was barely adequate. The Jets can play Jones at RT, or Cavka, or pick up a free agent, or use one of their other late round picks and pick up a RT. But you don't pass up a talent like Ferguson because you have a mediocre player playing his position.
What exactly makes you think D'Brick has more potential than Jones? He was abused in the Senior Bowl, he's combine numbers don't show anything over Jones. He dominated in an okay confrence, so what? If Jones was coming out this year he would be mentioned with D'Brick as a franchise LT based on his combine alone. Marvin Powell wasn't a pro bowl tackle until his third year in the league.
I dont think we should use both 1st round picks on the OL. We should use 1 pick for offense and 1 pick for defense.
One thing I'm not seeing stated here is the part about Mangold starting.... While it's possible we may pick up Brick there is now way on god's green earth is Mangold starting at C. Not unless he is another Vilma with his football intelligence. Gentleman/Ladies the center calls all the line schemes. That take either an incredible rookie or someone with experience. O-line usually takes 2-3 years before you really understand what's going on and adjust to the speed of the game. To hang your hat that Mangold would start right off the bat would be to assume he is one of the top 2-3 centers to come out in the last 5-10 years....anyone want to make that kind of assumption? Peace! The Mezz
I don't trust Kiper's mocks....I mean, he had Vernon Davis going 6 and Haloti Ngata going 13 or something like that, which seems extremely unlikely. I'm also in the mindset that with 4 and 29, one should be an OL, and the other should be a "skill position" (ie. if we go D'Brick at 4, take Bobby Carpenter at 29 and if we trade down for, say, Ngata, Broderick Bunkley, Vernon Davis, etc, take Mangold at 29 if the Jags don't take him.)
You totally missed that guys point-- he is saying that if you don't think jones can play the right side, and you draft a pure LT- then you will have 2 holes to fill, rather than just filling one by drafting a RT, and keeping jones at his spot. jones is young, and on his way up- why would you stunt his growth now by benching him or changing his position? He is a quality player, getting a very low salary-- with all the holes we have, we can surely focus our attention in other places where the upgrade would be much more significant. Your post was really annoying to read- and you totally missed the other guys point.
It is a totally different position, and AJ's size would make it difficult for him to play the right. Left ends are usually bigger, and stronger than right ends, who are faster, more pash rushers. (Ellis vs Abe) AJ has good speed, but is not heavy, or strong enough to play the right. his strengths make him at LT.
You can't be serious saying that Jones would be compared with D'brick if they were both coming out now, Jones only played one season at tackle, so yea hes still learning but he isnt in d'brick's league and it really wont make any difference to move him to the right side... plus d'brick was dominate at the senior bowl, many experts said he was clearly the best player on the field and he shut down kiwanika from bc... i think everyone just needs to realize just because a player isnt flashy and doesnt show up on a stat sheet doesnt mean he doesnt make a difference in a game, look at seattle last year, their oline was dominate and it carried them to a super bowl with a below average supporting cast (yea they had alexander but what is he without that line, we'll see what happens without hutchinson now)... oline is our biggest need and yes we could settle for lesser talent later in the draft but why when the BPA is right there under our nose
I think it'll mean the exact opposite... what it will mean is that they didnt give into all these fans shouting for the big name and did what is in the best interest of the team
