Breaking news, commentary and insider information on the New York Jets Jets ink Hofstra's McMackin, a camp invitee, to contract The third and final day of the Jets rookie minicamp is in the books and nothing from the field to report as Day 3 was closed to the media. I can tell you, according to a source, that one of the players the Jets liked was Hofstra offensive lineman Shawn McMackin, a tryout invitee who signed a contract with the team late this morning. More of those players who have signed deals, hopefully, to come. The 6-4, 295-pound McMackin, a River Vale, N.J. native, is versatile, not to mention bull-strong. He is listed as a guard but during his Hofstra career, coaches at some point plugged McMackin in at every offensive line position. Sounds like a great signing..... sure looks as though we're adding some depth, coinsidence I'm listening to you're draft review right now
Exactly... do we really need a new thread everytime someone who'll be bagging groceries in Sept gets an invite? ...end rant...
interesting. sounds very much like someone i played hs ball with that pretty much the same exact route. another local guy. his name was dave fiore and was an undrafted signee by bill parcells back in '97 i believe. got an injury during minicamp the next season and got snapped up by steve mariucci with the 9er's and had a respectable career that was shortened by chronic injuries...same way in hs and college. mcmackin sounds very much like fiore, out of hofstra...played every line position in college. kind of eerie almost. about the same height too, but mcmackin is a bit heavier.
In a zone blocking scheme it's standard. McMackin is also a workout freak. He ran a 4.8 40 and did 40 reps of 225 at his pro day. I only saw one Hofstra game this year. I can't really say I've seen much of this kid on the field, but he's athletic enough to hang in the league. SI called him "one of the most athletically gifted lineman in the entire draft." As I've mentioned in the past, some of the league's best offensive lines are made up of versatile, smaller guys who can get out and pull and play technically sound football. This guy looks like a keeper if only for his versatility. -X-
He's versatile, athletic, and strong. Those are three good qualities for a lineman to have. From Cimini's blog. http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/ They thought enough of him to sign him after that. Normally I wouldn't care, but our offensive line depth is atrocious. McMackin has an opportunity to make the roster if he keeps impressing.
If the kid can play back up center at the NFL level he has a fair chance to make the team. Right now I don't think the Jets have a back up center.
sounds like he has some physical skills although not HUGE decent size. did anyone hear anything specific about him from rookie camp? i am interested in his performance at this point and this is definitely worth a post imo.
