You guys are gonna love this guy! He's huge for a RB and I could see him as a short yardage/goal line specialist. FYI - first name is pronounced <Jay-oo>.

Great signing if so. Hes the ND killer pretty much, he chugs and chugs and is built like a monster. I felt that he was never utilized well in Mich St by the old coach though and that they had Ringer get a bit too many carries.

This guy is a powerful son of a gun though.

so more competition at the RB position? sweet. I think that either Caulcrick or Woodhead will make the roster, I give the edge to Woodhead because of his return ability. However I wouldn't be surprised to see a few RB's on the practice squad...

That is awesome! I played against this guy in high school and have met him a few times. He's a great person and an absolute giant in stature. Im really pulling for him to make the team and I think if he does he will be a weapon down by the goal-line like he was in college football.

A favorite of mine, great Kid and team leader. Caulcrick works his butt off and will have an excellent chance of making this team and a lock for the practice squad. I met him at an OSU game, really great person. You can tell he loves football!!! His motor is always going, keeps legs moving with his big body
to pick that extra yard.

He's from the Buffalo area and turned down the Bills....I love it!!

Michigan State running back Jehuu Caulcrick didn't hear his name called during last weekend's NFL Draft -- and that was okay.

Unlike most college athletes, Caulcrick already has had a life-changing moment. Many, in fact. Such was his life in the war-torn west African nation of Liberia.

Before he came to the United States in 1992, Caulcrick had seen his adopted brother killed and his grandfather shot in the leg trying to protect his grandchildren -- and read about his father being assassinated in a newspaper.

"I remember all of it," he said yesterday via cell phone from East Lansing, Mich. "Going from refugee camp to refugee camp. Stepping over dead bodies. If a soldier or rebel didn't like you, they'd kill you right there. I saw pregnant women (murdered).

"It was just something I don't think anybody should ever have to go through. ... It was tough. You didn't know if you would be alive or dead the next day. You didn't know where your next meal was coming from. You just try to survive."

Sunday night shortly after the draft, Caulcrick, who was projected as a late-round pick, finally got the call he was waiting for and signed with the Jets as a rookie free agent. He'll attend their rookie minicamp this weekend at Hofstra University.

"I'm very excited," Caulcrick said. "Of course, going in I wanted to be drafted and I was a little disappointed. But I feel everything happens for a reason. I feel it's a blessing to be signed by the Jets."

Caulcrick, 6-foot, 254 pounds, scored a single-season school-record 21 touchdowns and rushed for a career-high 872 yards last year as a senior. In four seasons at Michigan State, he rushed for 2,395 yards and 39 touchdowns, second best in school history behind Lorenzo White's 43 scores.

"I'm just grateful to God that the Jets see something in him," his mother Bonita said. "There are so many talented players out there. I see the Jets didn't draft a running back, so I think he'll come in there and prove himself."

That Jehuu (pronounced "JAY-you") is alive at all is reason to rejoice. In 1989, civil war erupted in Liberia between rebels and government troops. Unofficial estimates say hundreds of thousands of combatants and civilians were killed, and more than a million citizens were displaced, before it ended in 1996.

Jerome Blamo, Caulcrick's father, was a politician and security chief for the Liberian secretary of state. He loved his son, often taking him to soccer games. But as the war escalated, Blamo moved away from his family members, fearing for their safety. Simply put, when rebel forces killed government officials, they often killed their entire families.

Meanwhile, when the war began, Bonita Caulcrick went to the United States to obtain visas for her children. Caulcrick lived with his grandparents, seeking safety in one refugee camp after another.

One day, while in his grandmother's makeshift sewing school at one camp with his family, Caulcrick heard soldiers outside talking. Soon after, he said, he heard gunfire. A brother the family had unofficially adopted was shot in the neck by a stray bullet.

"I literally sat there and watched him die," Caulcrick said.

By August 1992, Bonita Caulcrick had secured visas for Jehuu and his older sister. As the family prepared to leave for the U.S., they went to a doctor's office in the capital city of Monrovia to get shots. By chance, a family member picked up the paper and read about a massacre of 500 people. Two hundred were identified, including Caulcrick's father. He had been separated from the family for about a year.

"It was disbelief and great hurt, particularly the way we found out about it," Caulcrick said. "I remember him as a great dad. He always made time for us. Everything I do I try to make him proud."

Caulcrick and his family settled in the tiny southwestern New York farm town of Findley Lake, near Erie, Pa., where his mother had friends. He attended a school in Clymer, N.Y., which had roughly 500 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. His high school graduating class totaled 26.

Caulcrick's first love was soccer, but the school had no team. So he took up football for the first time in the eighth grade. By the time he was done, he set a western New York record by rushing for 6,559 yards in his career at Clymer High and several big-time schools recruited him.

In his senior year at Michigan State, Caulcrick finally got the chance to showcase what he could do in big-time college football. It's not surprising that he counts Giants running back Brandon Jacobs and former Steelers great Jerome "The Bus" Bettis among his role models.

"In college, I watched film of those guys," he said. "Being a bigger guy, I take pride in being a bruising back and running the little guys over. ... I don't know how the Jets want to use me, but I'll do whatever they ask."

Caulcrick is thrilled to be going to the Jets' minicamp this weekend -- though a part of him remains in Liberia, where a second civil war was waged from 1997-2003. Today, it is a country marked by poverty and instability.

"It's been bittersweet being here (in the U.S.)," he said, "because I left family behind and I don't know if I'll ever see them again."

I'd really love to see Jehuu latch on as backup FB to Richardson and Woodhead as a STer (punt return specialist?). Jehuu's the man, I love his story. If he'd be willing to lead how to lead block I think he could be a huge asset to the running game in the future. I was really surprised when I saw that no one took a chance on him in the 6th or 7th.

I'm a Spartan fan and loved having Caulcrick, I was really going to miss having him on the Spartans but to have him a Jet is awsome, he has to make the team, he'll give the Jets that big Bruiser with speed that they have not had since Lamont Jordan...Great move Jets!
