As far as him not giving it his all against, less competition goes, no one should really worry....

This is the NFL, this is the league where the best of the best in the F-Ing nation play and that there will always be someone who is just as good if not better than Vernon each and every week. Thats more than enough motivation to go around.

I think the correct count is 4, with an outside shot at 5.

Mayock said that on Gholston's good plays he is "the best defensive player I have ever seen". Let's hope that he is able to find consistent focus in the NFL, and he could be special.

I agree with a post at the beginning of this page. This is the NFL, he will not be taking any plays or games off, this is a dream of his, to be here.

Great post was gonna say the same thing. Now the more I think about it too, Gholston is a high character guy and he has showed up in the BIG games. He will be earning a living now playing football in the NFL. It almost seemed like he was just getting by in college. But now it when he is ready to making a living for himself and truly stand out. He went through college without getting injured and he has been a workout warrior. This kid is going to be something special.

One of only TWO! In Long's career. With a great coaching staff and open competition with Bryan Thomas this kid can truly be something special. This pick was a no brainer.

One thing we have to remember bryan cox is gonna be in this kids ear almost everyday for the next few years, provided he is working with the lb's, something tells me he knows how to fire somebody up.

This is a crappy pick. You all said the beast crap with Robertson and finally he is gone after a waste of draft picks and loads of money.

Combine workout wounders never pan out.

When they are drafted their speed and strength are topped out and are the first to go. More downside than up.

You should draft playeers on ability or technique not benchpress numbers.

You are the one who has been pimping up McFadden and your gonna sit here and talk about ability or technique. McFadden's technique is horrible and will never work in the faster NFL. It is also unfair to compare Robertson who was from a past regime. This is a different CS now and RB was not a NEED. Pass Rushing OLB was.

Also McFadden did not drop to the Jets so he was not an option as 6. It would have cost too much to trade up for McFadden and there were no trades above us which just says those teams planned on drafting the guys in front of them. Gholston was there for the Jets to pick so he was the pick. The Jets would have done what the Pats did if there guy was not there.

Talk to a Raiders fan about there W-L record the past few years. McFadden wont change that by himself. Gholston will help the Jets W-L record in the upcoming seasons by being part of a team.

Gholston will be burnt on more plays than he makes. Unproven at LB and undersized for DE. Another B Thomas.

^^^ I can't say i disagree with you. But the guy deserves a chance..... Worse case he is just a 3rd down pass rusher that backs up Thomas and Pace.

I do see your point, how can a guy be a beast when all he does is rush. He doesn't play the run or play in coverage..... pretty limited beast if you ask me.

If this kid ran a 5.2 and stunk it up at the combine, do you realize how many people would trash this kid and say how disappointing of a player he really is?

What do you want him to do? He's in a lose-lose in your eyes. Tear the combine down like expected and you are labeled as a workout warrior. Stink it up at the combine and at pro day and you are considered a flop and a disappointment

Can we please commend a kid for going out there and doing what was told of him and then some? Just for once?

Of course it's a knock when you disappear against the easy schools on the schedule. How else can you look at it? If he had played to his ability all year maybe he would have had 20 sacks or even more. I have never said he isn't talented. I said he needs to be motivated. I hope those of you who think he will be just by being in the NFL are right. I worry that after you stuff 20 million dollars of guaranteed money into the pocket of somebody like that there is really nothing left to motivate him.

I'll stay reserved on the Gholston. The Jets should have traded down IMO. People keep saying he is our guy to knock Brady on his butt like the Giants did. But that last time I checked, a team named the Colts has had a bunch of pass rush specialist for years and they never knock Brady on his butt. Freeney, Mathis, Brock, Reagor, that is a great pass rushing front. But they do nothing but pass rush.

The Giants front four had the best all around DE of the generation in Strahan on it. It Also had one of the Best up and coming all around DE's in Umenyiora on the line. They also had huge 6-4 and 6-5 DT's in Tuck and Robins compared to the colts averaged sized Mathis 6-2 and Reagor 6-3. They were fast, they were big, they played the Run & pass and they even could cover/zone.

If Gholston is just a pass rush specialist, I don't think it's going to help as much as people want to believe against the Pats. The giants did way more then just rush Brady. They took everything away from Brady. The short pass, the run, the draw the screen..... and it still took Eli running away from a sure sack and heaving a hail marry to beat the Pats.

No attempt to make a comparison here but in the old Giant 3-4 Lawrence Taylor did not even sniff at guys going into the secondary. Coverage was not his thing. He was almost entirely about getting to the passer and playing the run.
