A good friend of mine plays for Wagner College - D1 AA. His teammate Al Phillips was contacted by the Jets during the 6th round and was told he'd be selected by the Jets in the 7th round. I guess when Nate Garner fell (?) to them, they decided against him. Here's some info on him...

    5'11, 195 lbs, 4.42 40 time, 17 career collegiate interceptions

Obviously the level of competition caused some concern, but from what my friend says, he's got some serious skills. Wouldn't be surprised if they bring him in for a tryout.

Update: He was just SIGNED by the Jets. I guess they called him a couple hours after the draft and signed him. He's very excited to be a Jet, hopefully it works out!

well thats cool, I know nothing about Phillips, but having another safety in camp certainly won't hurt!

i wonder how long it takes walk-ons to 'sign' once the paper is put in front of them.

but seriously, most of these guys won't make the team, so i wonder what it is that they 'sign', and how much coin they go home with after training camp.

i'm guessing $2-3K per week and 3 squares a day until the bus ride home.

That's crazy, I didn't realize undrafted players were signed so soon after the draft. Hopefully he makes some noise in training camp.

He's a CB, not a S. But I guess he could be switched to S.

I was told it was a $10,000 signing bonus, but I too was shocked at how quickly he was signed after the draft.
