Mayock did his mock of the first ten. C.Long, J.Long, Dorsey, Gholston,Ryan, Jets take McFadden, Albert to the Pats. Lombardi jumped in and said any QB going to the Chiefs should hold out because of there OL. He thought the Chiefs would take a left tackle. Lombardi said the Jets should take Ryan because they have no starter on their team. He said Kellen was weak-armed and couldn't make throws to the outside. Mayock mentioned how the Jets sent Ryan a portion of the playbook two days in advance of his workout. They put him on the field and on the board. I don't see what Lombardi sees about Kellen's weak arm. I think he has a good arm, not great but certainly not weak. I believe you take a franchise QB any time you can get one. I've seen some of Ryan and no his skill people were weak but does anyone see Ryan as a franchise QB?
"Lombardi said the Jets should take Ryan because they have no starter on their team. He said Kellen was weak-armed and couldn't make throws to the outside." What an idiot, he said Kellen while clearly talking about Penny?
I don't think anybody is completely sold on Ryan right now but he has the physical attributes. 6'5"-230 to grow into a franchise QB.
I've seen him play several times. He's a great leader, he makes good decisions, and while he doesn't have a cannon he can make all the throws.
If we were to take Ryan at No. 6 then we might miss Gholston, McKelvin, or McFadden. All of these guys are better fits for the NYJ than Ryan. It's going to be three or four years before the NYJ can move the third quarterback into starting, in my opinion. Whether Chad or Kellen win this competition, they will be 1 & 2 for a while, and Ryan has to compete with them and learn the system as well. That's a long time for No. 6 08 draft pick to sit. Don't think it's good value for the NYJ.
Ok... If Ryan is taken at 6... Gholston, DMC aren't there. Ryan is BPA over McKelvin. 3-4 years? no, Chad and KC dont get that much time to work while this kid sits- 2 years tops. Palmer. #1 overall, sat while Kitna did his thing, so expect Ryan to sit 1-2 years. OL is in place, so watch him take over in less that 2 years.
much rather take my chances with flacco, or henne, in the 2nd. i don't see ryan as that hot of a prospect. he sounds a little like penny to me. smart, weak armed. lets not go down that road again, please!
I think Lombardi use to be a member of the Oakland Raiders personnel department. Mayock is also a BC grad. I would hesitate a bit when listening to these two guys talk about Ryan.
Exactly, and Kellen is our guy! We are going to give him every chance to lead this team, and the front office has made that clear.
If McFadden, Gholston, and both Longs are all gone, than I guess I could see this happening, however I wouldn't be too happy. Ryan just doesn't seem to me to be THAT GUY that will have a great nfl career. I know that chad and KC don't seem to be very promising either, but I would much rather take a QB in the 2nd round. I am higher on Brohm, Flacco, and Henne more than I am of Ryan. I just don't see it with him like other potential franchise QB's that come around in previous drafts.
Clear? As in naming the QB position open for competition clear? If we take Ryan, Penny is gone for a day 2 pick that night. Ryan sits behind Clemens for 1 year tops, and Clemens is a backup by 2009. Ryan is NOT weak armed. I'd compare his arm strength to Brady. Not Manning or Favre, but that isn't really necessary. For gods sake, he threw for 4507 yards in 14 games. 31 TD's with 19 INT's with not much surrounding him. His passer rating (I know, I know) was 127. Clemens senior year saw him throw for 2406 yards and 19 TD's on a team playing the spread offense.
They have not named anyone, but by throwing Kellen in for the last two games of the season it said some thing. Mangini won't name anyone, therefore it will make both of our QBs work hard for the rights to start, its a great idea. And who the heck is trading us a day two pick for Pennington? Seriously, think about that. The season Chad is coming off and the contract he has, I dont see us even getting a 7th round pick. Anyone that would take a chance on Chad would wait for us to cut him and then sign Chad to something like a 1 year $1.5 million deal.
theyre completely nothing alike except the intangibles dept. Ryan is a field general. and hes far from having a weak arm. he can make all the throws. just because theres no workout legend of him chucking bombs ala jamarcus russell and kyle boller i dont know what you have to do to be a good qb prospect anymore, honestly. ryan has as good a chance as anyone ive seen in a while to be a legit franchise qb. andre woodson is a complete gamer too. the thing nowadays is overanalyzation. everyone wants to sound smart by knocking top producers down a peg or digging for a draft steal. its all pretty moot. everybody mentions he threw 19 INT's his senior yr. nobody mentions dan marino threw more than that his senior yr. let alone that he was 21-4 as a starter with 3 of those losses being road games. and he lead a program with mediocre expectations to within 1 game of being in the national championship. the guys good. just because hes not in the heisman club doesnt mean he wont make it. long as he doesnt go to ATL theyre the shitcan organization about to take the baton from the OAK.
I don't claim to be a big college fan, but of all the ball I did watch the past year, Ryan was definitely the best NFL QB prospect I did see. While I'll say the jury is still out on Clemens, and it would be hard to imagine ANYONE succeeding in the situation he was put into last year (possibly one of the worst o-lines ever?) The one thing that did concern me was lack of progression...... in fact it was more of a regression as the season went along. That's not to say he can't/won't succeed in the future, but he was not impressive. I think there are better choices for the JETS to make in the draft, but I wouldn't be very upset if Ryan was their choice.
Lets see Jamarcus Russell wasn't considered a franchise QB because he had an awesome workout. HE was considered one because he completed passes at high 60 percent Ratio.(accuracy) 27 TDs to 8 interceptions. ( decision Making) In the toughest conference in America(sec- whio had more players drafted in the NFL the last couple years) Even mayock who so far up Ryan arse, will not even try to say hes as good a prospect as Russell.
Russell = Culpepper take2 Big dude, strong arm....... but I never saw the "intangibles". To me he almost seemed like the "default" #1 pick. I could be wrong (it happens often) we'll see.........
Again Strong arm is not the most important quality in a QB. ITs accuracy. HE proved hes extremely accurate by having a high completion percentage(High sixties) in the toughest conference in America. (SEC) NOw when you have a QB that is accurate, and you add the ARM he possesses(scouts say he might have the best arm ever) You have something special at QB position. MJamarcus Russell came out this year, without a doubt would have been the number 1 pick.(y6ou don't pass on a talent like that at the most important position)
Brady has a stronger arm than Manning, I give as evidence the last 2 throws of the Super Bowl(on a sprained ankle). He has actually improved his arm strength and accuracy over the last couple of years. Manning plays in a dome, but his arm isn't the same outside of Indy. Favre has the strongest arm of all time, only Elway comes close. Ryan has a good arm, but is not in the upper echelon of current NFL guys. I don't think he is any better than Clemens. Want an underrated arm? Take a look at Derek Anderson on the Browns.
