Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum reportedly assured Chad Pennington's agent at the Combine in February that his client will not be traded in 2008. Tannenbaum also promised Pennington a chance to battle Kellen Clemens to start. Pennington has not requested a trade and is participating in the Jets' offseason program, so he's seemingly fine with the situation. In addition, owner Woody Johnson assured coach Eric Mangini and Tannenbaum that they will not be fired even if they experience another losing season in 2008. - New York Daily News
Wow – he’s really putting himself out there. (1) Who in the hell would trade anything more than a box of tape and maybe some under-wrap for him? (2) even if someone did want him on their team – why trade even that box of tape and under-wrap when he will be released?
The CS is still saying what it has said all along this offseason. Chad and Kellen will compete for the starting QB in an open competition. Chad is not going anywhere, the NYJ need two good QBs who can run the BS offense -- especially if the OL learns to do its job well for a change.
Just my opinion, but I think the folks on this Forum are way too hard on Pennington and Clemens. Re Pennington, folks forget quickly that he helped lead the Jets to the play-offs more frequently than at any time since the last 1960s. Granted, he is no Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, but at his best he is an above-average quarterback with a few obvious limitations. Last year, those limitations were highlighted because: (a) the offensive line was terrible; (b) the running game was terrible; and (c) we did not have a single wide receiver with breakaway speed. Under those conditions, it is no wonder that defenses were all over Pennington, the running game was jammed leaving long yardage situations, and defensive backs played right on the wide receivers, leaving little to no margin for error. I suspect that if the line starts run blocking and protecting the QB, and we have another speedy receiver and a running game that keeps folks honest, Pennington can do well. He may never be an elite QB, but teams have made the play-offs and won without always having the best QB. Re Clemens, I can't believe the lack of patience exhibited on this board. Last year was his first year starting. As indicated above: (a) the offensive line was terrible; (b) the running game was terrible; and (c) we did not have a single wide receiver with breakaway speed. So, of course, let's give up on Clemens. He was a high 2nd round draft pick, who probably would have been a 1st round draft pick but for an injury his senior year. The guy has potential. I'm not saying he is going to be great, but to give up on him after one year of playing, given the entire team's weaknesses, is short-sighted. Let's give him another year and see how he can do with an improved supporting cast. (If he wins the starting job and we go 4-12 again, I'll be the first to argue that we should dump him!) Mike
I think clemens can be our future and Im willing to give chad another shot behind a great line. When we had a great line a couple of years ago with penny at qb we made it far in the playoffs lets see what he can do now.
I agree. The fact is, we can't trade, you are damanged goods. We just pray to the football gods everyday the Kellen beats you out, stays healthy, and you just mop up when we blow teams out
chads now the insurance policy, hes familiar with the organization and will stick around for a paycut until theres a definite franchise qb here. kellen will win the battle that i promise. and if chad does get the nod to start it will be similar to last yr cause chad pennington is just not a starter anymore. anyone who will make arguments to support why pennigtons play has declined has to use similar ones for why clemens didnt step on the field and solidify his job. poor OL play, lack of running game and recieving depth. now that the lines been shored up a little bit i think kellens scrambling ability will be of more use and i also think kellens errant bullets will be able to be placed and timed better making up for the so called complete lack of accuracy his naysayers say he has. (i loved what i saw in him, he just needs more coaching and ACTUAL starting experience) clemens will be starting. im not guaranteeing but its what i expect.
of course chad won't be traded, who would trade for his noodle arm? THe jets would be lucky to get a stick of gum for him. They need to just get rid of chad and let KC develop and become the full time starter.
Eagle0588, regardless of whether Chad wins or loses the competition with Kellen (and whoever else they bring in), Kellen will become a better starter faster with Chad around than if he were traded or cut loose. Chad elevates Kellen's game in a lot of ways. Just ask him.
is that what kellen said? Of course he would say that. Do you expect any QB to say otherwise about a teammate? He's not going to go out and say something negative about chad even if does really feel that way. It just what the players have to say whenever asked about a teammate, its praise., I don't think kellen will become better faster with Chad, if chad is taking playing time away from Kellen, it gives kellen less time to go through the growing pains of a young QB. And as far as elevating KC's game, i didn't see any of that really during the regular season. I just saw the expected play of a young QB.
some "dink & dunk" team would probably trade for Chad...and if KC doesn't end up with Matt Ryan at the draft...i would expect Herm to sniff around him and possibly convince the KC front office to make an offer. Yes...I could be talking out of my ass....but a man can dream, right?
i don't see kansas city making an offer for chad. Herm wants to start Croyle and develop him, bringing in chad would only slow down his progress
You and I both know that Croyle is a pile of hot garbage with a hot wife...that's it. He brings nothing else to the table.
I don't know about that, Croyle is like a slightly dumber version of Chad minus the knot of scar tissue in his throwing shoulder.
Brody wasn't offered a Rhodes scholarship, as I remember. But Brody is not half bad. He was just thrust in the game before he was ready, that's all. Give him some time. Oh I know that the clock is ticking on our lives and we no longer believe in our immortality in quite the way that these young NFL players still blythely assume is their "destiny". Kids have a right to their illusions, and you have to take that in account as well as the harshness we can bring to such questions because we feel the cold breath of time like the kids cannot possibly fathom as yet. Personally, I like their anxiety about doing well and their fears about having to manifest in competition with their peers and slightly elders. It's part of the NFL today. The average man fan has to give the kid player the benefit of the doubt in these issues. We want so badly for them to succeed on our behalf. But then we have to give them a chance as well.
I wish I was a highly touted QB coming out of college who became highly mediocre in the pros... then i'd have that too.
