I think it was our most 1st round picks ever. But in restrospect, I don't think we got 1st round production out of any of our 1st round picks from that year.
I take 1977 over 2000 Marvin Powell (One of the best Jets Tackles ever) Wesley Walker (Top 3 WR in Jets History) Scott Dirking (solid RB Joe Klecko (Best D-Lineman in Jets History) Dan Alexander (Best Guard in Jets history? Top 3 no doubt) Matt Robinson (Decent QB)
whatever year we drafted klecko has to be our best draft. the ny sac exchange was special (minus gastinaue's theatrics). although seeing mark stand over a battered QB was kinda nice until the yellow flags came out. i'm not sure who hatted mark's celebration dances worse, the downed qb or klecko. anyone remember gastinaue's 'brief' boxing career? or his daughter? would someone please post a pick of miss gastinaue for the newbies!
I think Chad, when he was healthy, might have justified a 2nd round pick. Ellis has underperformed, Abe was injured half the time he was here, and Anthony Becht was Anthony Becht. If that is our best draft ever (although I have to agree with ess-dog about '77) then it's only because of our crappy draft history.
When you have 4 first round picks (the only time this has happened in NFL history) it should be pretty good, but in retrospect none of those selected were great (you can make an argument for Abraham or Coles). I don't think we should be crowing about that draft. It was a weak 1st round draft class overall.
Anyone feel like posting the results from the first round of 2000?- Im interested to see who they could have drafted
1977 is best, but I really hope 2006 is eventually proven to be even better with a Hall of Fame Center, a perennial Pro Bowler at LT, and a Championship QB. 1 4 4 D'Brickashaw Ferguson OT Virginia 1 29 29 Nick Mangold C Ohio State 2 17 49 Kellen Clemons QB Oregon 4 6 103 Brad Smith WR Missouri 4 20 117 Leon Washington RB Florida State
1 12 Shaun Ellis DE Tennessee 1 13 John Abraham OLB South Carolina 1 18 Chad Pennington QB Marshall 1 27 Anthony Becht TE West Virginia 3 78 Laveranues Coles WR Florida St. 5 143 Windrell Hayes WR USC 6 179 Tony Scott S North Carolina St. 7 218 Richard Seals DT Utah
Same here. Good summary. I like the 2000 group, but 1977 was better. In 1979 we got Marty Lyons #1 and Mark Gastineau #2, that's not too shabby but I'd have to see the rest of the list to compare it to the others.
I will kill myself if... If 2000 was the best draft ever? As a Jets fan, this whole idea has becom so depressing that I will either have to quit the team, or quit the planet. What is this guy talking about? Becht was a total bust. Abraham never lived up to his potential. Pennington? Let's me remeber someting... "It's a privilege to cover the NFL" or something like that... A decent QB, but he's no Ken O'Brien! And WTF are those other no-names in that draft?
2001 was a good draft picking talent wise.......Just a shame that none of our day 1 guys are still with the team. This draft was big during out 04 run though... Santana Moss Lamont Jordan Kareem McKenzie Jamie Henderson James Reed(In Round 7)
1996. Hopefully, it will be the last time we ever pick in that position based on a previous year's record. (I'll trade for #1 overall, any day down the road) But with the Keyshawn Draft, it was the only time I can ever recall knowing whole-heartedly, EXACTLY who they were picking. And we all were anticipating it with excitement and optimism. That day when the jets made the first overall pick, we literally all smiled together. It was a good feeling to have after having one of the lowest feelings I've ever felt as a Jets fan...by October. Remember the Toilet Bowl vs. the Giants? I think we lost 6-3 and that was their first win of that season too. I remember what a nice feeling it was having absolutely no mystery about the draft for the only time in my life. And what a nice feeling it was for every component of the Jets family...the front office, the owner, the coaching staff, the fans, the media...to all be in total agreement about the draft. For that one day only. (God help us this year when we have McFadden in our grasp, take another Bryan Thomas or Dewayne Robertson, and watch McFadden do a Barry Sanders up in New England. Less predictable shit has happened with this team.)
You may be saying the same thing 10 years from now and meaning exactly the opposite of what you mean now. Then again, maybe not.
True, he is a boom or bust... but the running styles are different... i don't feel McFadden can make something out of nothing if he has a terrible O-Line like Sanders did.
