Am I missing something here? I know he has been injured, but 2 years, $3.5mm, that seems absurdly low for someone with his talent. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3298035 Panthers agree to two-year deal with WR Hackett ESPN.com news services CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Free agent wideout D.J. Hackett agreed to two-year, $3.5 million deal with Carolina on Monday as the Panthers continued to upgrade their receiving corps. The former Seahawk chose Carolina over Seattle, Washington and Tampa Bay, according to his agent, Kevin Robinson. He had a minimum salary offer from the Redskins. The Panthers have been busy trying to get star receiver Steve Smith help after he faced constant double-teams last season. The Panthers signed receiver Muhsin Muhammad last month after he was released by Chicago. The 6-foot-2 Hackett provides a big target opposite the small and speedy Smith. The 26-year-old Hackett has been plagued by injuries. Two years ago, he caught 45 passes and had a 13.6 yard-per-catch average for the Seahawks. He started 14 games over the past three years.
They are signing him to be the fourth receiver in an already crowded corps of wideouts...so he's not going to make that much. He'll be behind Steve Smith, Muhsin Muhammed, and Dwayne Jarrett.
I think he will be above Muhammed and competing with Jarett, but his injuries are a cause for concern
That could happen...but I hear that the coaching staff is really high on Jarrett. Muhsin is also very popular in Carolina. We'll see what happens. Muhammed and Jarrett are the type of wideouts that compliment Steve Smith in the best way. I'm sure the Panthers' coaching staff will find a way to utilize all of them.
Hackett is going to be the number two. Moose is getting long in the tooth; he's a fan favorite, but fifty plays a game is going to be too much for him. Dwayne Jarrett is going to be cut by training camp. He had more "ineligibles" than catches last season. Steve Smith called him out for being lazy. And he just got busted with a DWI, if I'm not mistaken. The kid is all bust. The Panthers got a great deal for this kid. If I were Steve Smith, I'd be very happy with what the upgrades they've made at wide receiver.
I think this is a great pickup. He's either going to outperform the contract or he's going to be a rather small mistake. I'd be shocked if he didn't contribute. He'll certainly beat out Muhammad and Jarrett. -X-
I'm happy for hackett he put hard work in to get a starting job and he got his money he deserves. Unfortunately the panthers are known for their wr busts and hopefully this wont be another one. dwayne jarrett will be lucky to make the practice squad
Are you serious? Carolina had awful quarterback play after Delhomme went down. You don't cut player like Dwayne Jarrett in his second year, because he got in trouble. You can't call a second year player a bust...that's just stupid. Jarrett is the new Muhsin Muhammed.
