We really don't hold all the chips because we probably can't keep him unless he is willing to renegiotate his contract. Unless he and his agent believe a renegiotated deal with the Jets is better than he can get if the Jets cut him he may well not renegiotate? He also knows that if he stays in shape and can force the Jets to cut him someone is going to have an injury in TC that will likely drive up his value.
I'm not bothered if he stays or not though . If we end up paying him his current contract, (which I don't think we will for a second) so be it, and he plays for big bucks. Any other scenario is a bonus.
That's the way to look at it. Not every offseason move we make or attempt to make is going to turn out a 100% winner for us. Work on the law of averages and look at the entire picture. On the whole, I'd say Tanny has done real well again this year. Now, if we can make equally good choices in the draft as we've done in F/A, we'll be in good shape. I'm not saying there won't be a knife-hunting wild boar guy in there somewhere, but by and large, I think Tanny will be overall successful again.
Didn't the Boar hunter end up in Denver? I actually think DR will be traded, but I would welcome him back beacuse he was one of last seasons better players, and just out of curiosity, would love to see what he can do next to a man mountain at NT. How about this for a front 3 , Drob, Jenkins and draft Sedrick Ellis?
Once again fans cutting down players who are in the wrong system. We never knew the potential of him since he was brought in for a 4-3 scheme under Herm and now he is the Smallest Tackle in football trying to play a 3-4. I agree he is costing us too much money but we have to live with it since he is neither tradeable or worth losing the moeny by cutting him
Cincy, I think. Even started a few games last year. If he pans out and you consider how well Atari Bigby is doing, do we start to question the talent assessment of the coaching staff?
Right, he did too, I remember he did play aginst us. How many players have we ever got in from other teams, considered busts that have panned out..... Namath?
This is exactly why we have won zippo in the last 39 years or so. This is from the Cimini blog March 14, 2008 Robertson deal continues to haunt the Jets On April 25, 2003, the Jets drafted Dewayne Robertson for all the wrong reasons - and they’re still paying for it. They’ve been trying to trade him for nearly a month, but have found no takers - shocking, considering he’s only 26 and, from all indications, has no off-the-field baggage. Let’s take a look back at the decision that continues to haunt the franchise. The day after the draft, then-GM Terry Bradway, sometimes too candid for his own good, admitted they made the bold move for Robertson (trading two No. 1 picks to move up), in part, because he sensed the organization was demoralized in the aftermath of the Redskins Raid. Remember, Bradway was widely criticized that offseason for losing Laveranues Coles, Randy Thomas, John Hall and Chad Morton to the Skins. “Yeah, I do feel a lot of relief,” said Bradway, reveling in his aggressive move. “You don’t win championships in the offseason, but you want people feeling good about your team. As a result of this draft, we’ve been able to do that. I think we’ve been able to put a little spark in here.” It was a curious move because, several weeks earlier, they had paid a $3 million option bonus to retain DT Josh Evans, who was starting at the position (3-technique tackle) that Robertson was drafted to play. Shortly after the draft, the news broke that Evans had tested positive and was facing a long drug suspension. The Jets found out before the draft, which explains why they felt compelled to trade up for Robertson. Presumably, they also knew he had a bad knee coming out of college. That didn’t become public until August, 2005, when Robertson, experiencing discomfort, left training camp to visit Birmingham-based orthopedist James Andrews. The Daily News reported that he had a bone-on-bone condition, and then-coach Herm Edwards confirmed it the next day when questioned about the News’ story. “Bone is rubbing on bone,” said Edwards, adding that Robertson had no cartilage and would have to deal with the condition for the remainder of his career. Robertson has missed only three games in his career (none because of the knee), but he hasn’t lived up to expectations. At the same time, he has made more than $26 million in his career, making him one of the highest-paid defensive tackles. That contract, which still has two years, $18 million remaining, has irked owner Woody Johnson, according to a source. Now, after trading for Kris Jenkins and signing backup Sione Pouha to an extension, the Jets have no use for Robertson and want to trade him. But they can’t. Ever since a tentative trade with the Bengals fell apart, there have been stories about Robertson’s knee condition. The word is out. The Broncos are interested in making a deal, but the Jets would be lucky to get a box of doughnuts for him. Everybody knows that Robertson is due a $3 million roster bonus in early June, which means they will cut him before having to write that check. Considering the enormity of their investment in Robertson - both the money and the draft picks - it would represent a blunder of epic proportions if they cut him loose and receive nothing in return. GM Mike Tannenbaum must feel like he’s trying to peddle a knock-off Rolex to street-corner salesmen. It’s hard to hustle hustlers.
Hmm getting confused, it was the Cards from the NFL that selected him #12 overall against the AFLs overall #1 pick which was the Jets, but alot of teams were put off by his knee injury. '64 draft.
Bradway shouldn't even be part of our organization anymore. But some good can come from this, if nothing more than Tannenbaum getting a good lesson in how dumb it is to do what Bradway did that year and what the consequences can be. I remember being dumbfounded on that draft day, when we traded those two #1's to take DeRob, and I also remember thinking, "Man... this guy better be the second coming of Christ."
Dslob was drafted, and played in 4-3 system, and he STILL sucked. The term "D-Slob" was not coined after Mangini took over. Did your peanut-sized brain forget how atrocious his plays were already? And by cutting him, the Jets will still save over 8M - what the hell?
DSLob or Eddie Curry, is a mediocre football player. Just because he was drafted #4 overall and has started every game in his forgettable career does not change how completely mediocre he is.
Seriously. He has never been a standout DT in either system and he is costing us a lot in the cap...get rid of him..we know Denver is interested so we will just have to see how things go.
