Really not that simple at all. As I have said in previous threads, this team must win this year. There is no time for any QB to develop or get another audition. Whoever is better in camp will get the job, period. Based on last year that would seem to mean it will be Penninton. His 68.8% completion rate compared to Clemens' 52% would seem to seal it if that holds up this camp.
But Chad has always looks excellent and ready at TC. Come to TC with us this year and you'll see for yourself... you'll walk away convinced he's Joe Montana reincarnated. Then the red shirt comes off and the hitting starts and along with that, the Chinese Firedrills and Keystone Cops impersonations. The box gets jammed for lack of a crisp deep threat and we're right back to Square One again with the dinks and dunks and drive-sputtering 3rd and outs. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Chad will probably look better again in camp, but that Mangini has a pretty good memory of what usually happens with Chad once the season starts and the games count.
Yes, but he also remembers that Clemens positively sucked last year in game time situations. We have no great options at QB but it is my guess that Pennington will win the job again.
To sum it up it is either the unknown KC or the known but easily defendable CP. If KC is not the man then we wasted many dollars on Faneca, Jenkins & Woody since they will not be around by the time the next QB comes to NJ TC
Clemens had the lowest QB rating and the lowest completion percentage of any QB in the league last year. It's really hard to give that kind of performance any kind of reward. If he had shown anything at all he would already have been named the starter and Pennington would have been traded or released by now.
Clemens sucked behind an O-line that increasingly sucked as the season wore on. As bad as the O-line was when Chad was under center, it went even further downhill from there. During the final KC game, which was probably a game we didn't even deserve to win, the O-line gave Clemens almost zero protection and the pocket collapsed constantly, causing him to make foolish mistakes because he was running for his life. What would Chad have looked like under those circumstances? I think we already know, because when he unravelled during his final game, the game that was the final straw for Mangini, he was not only physically incapable of making any plays, he also made a ton of mental errors by throwing INTs into the waiting hands of defenders at our own 25 instead of getting rid of it. Now, that's what you'd expect from a rookie like Clemens, but never from a supposed veteran like Pennington. And that's why he was pulled and that's why we need to find out if Clemens has what it takes to overcome that kind of pressure. It's all about the pressure in my mind... something we know Pennington can't handle. We don't know if Clemens can handle it either, but we've got to find out during real pressure games that count, not in meaningless preseason skirmishes with the Eagles.
Pennington played behind that exact same OL and did twice as good. So what you are really saying despite how you worded it is that Clemens is much worse playing under pressure then Pennington is.
Wow finally understanding that TC & xhibition games mean zero? "if Clemens can handle it either, but we've got to find out during real pressure games that count, not in meaningless preseason skirmishes with the Eagles".
There will be NO regular season tryouts this year. Whether those games mean anything or not that's where the job will be won or lost.
I'm confounded that this is what your understanding of my above paragraph states, which is about as far from what I said as can possibly be. I did not say that at all. I'd like to have an intelligent debate over both QBs, but if my words are going to be twisted in this way, it makes that quite impossible. As Champs says, we already know what we have in Pennington. But Clemens' ability behind a decent O-line is still relatively unknown. Unknown because of that and because he's still growing, maturing and learning. I guess a lot will depend on TC and preseason again, as you say. I'm not discounting at all what we can see on the field during that time from both QBs. If Clemens stinks up the field and Chad performs flawlessly, well, of course you're going to go with Chad. But if the performances are anywhere near close from both guys, I think Clemens will get the nod, don't you?
Umm no! If the line gels and we can be a dominate run team , then yes Chad would have his ability to play action again. He doesnt have a long ball! Chad can throw it 50 yards but its a looping rainbow that will give defenders time to knock it down or pick it off all together. Kellen Clemens is here to be the big arm that we need. I dont focast a chad start any time soon unless due to injury. Lastly , I dont want to just make the playoffs . I want a Championship season. Is that so wrong!
I read it a little too quickly. I saw that you said Pennington can't handle the pressure but mis-understood what you said about Clemens. His results would indicate that Clemens can't either. He had enough games, in my opinion, to prove himself one way or the other. I believe Mangini must feel the same way or there wouldn't be a competition for the job this year.
Quote: "...Then the red shirt comes off and the hitting starts and along with that, the Chinese Firedrills and Keystone Cops impersonations. The box gets jammed for lack of a crisp deep threat and we're right back to Square One again with the dinks and dunks and drive-sputtering 3rd and outs...." What you are describing here are the symptoms of a rotten OL that cannot keep the DL out of our backfield. There are no Chinese Firedrills when the "firemen" are flat of their back trying to catch their breaths after being caved in. There are no Keystone Cops impersonations when the OL is not a sieve and the full DL has to take time out to readjust their helmets so they aren't trying to see out of their earholes. The NYJ are rebuilding their offensive line, they have signed an FA blocking FB, and they are courting a blocking TE. There is no "veteran with a great arm" lurking on the sidewalk outside of NYJ headquarters. There are a few newbies in the draft that will require 3.5 to 4 years to become good enough to start. At the moment, we have a veteran starter and a soon-to-be-veteran starter that will compete throughout OFA, TC, and pre-season for the QB job. This competition will take place behind an OL that will be emphasizes smash mouth football in all its violent phases. The QB position, regardless of which veteran plays it, will generate greatly enhanced performance because the OL will be manhandling the opposition, and begging to run it again. It is obvious that you guys are so starved for representative OL dominance at the line of scrimmage that you don't remember how good it feels to bash somebody instead of try breathlessly to trick them while one hand is still tied behind you. It will feel like a new world when you see the NYJ standing over the DL lying on the ground as they dare them to get up and line up once again. I know it is an alien feeling, but I believe our OL are heading back to winning the respect we need from the defense to win regularly. Get ready to enjoy yourselves; gnashing your teeth will be a thing of the past.
You are God... and I worship at your feet. Deliver me from evil, for thou art the power, the glory and the life everlasting, amen.
I think the Jets made some great acquisitions this off season and really bolstered their running game and defense. I question whether they overspent though for said players, but given the increase in the salary cap every year and the abundance of room the Jets had this year I suppose it makes more sense. Signing bonuses make these types of deals a little easier on the salary cap, assuming the player contributes for most of the term of the contract. Richardson is obviously a 1 year piece of your running puzzle that should help create some space for Leon Washington. Makes me wonder if the Jets are going to go with an offensive style similar to the Chargers this year, however you don't really have a dominate tight end but you do have decent receivers. I think these were steps in the right direction for the Jets, but I'm curious to see how it effects their salary cap in the coming years.
You have to make the playoffs before you can win a Championship! They said that Favre was all washed up before the start of last season. Every year things happen during the year that seem improbable before the season starts. Chad having a great year is not impossible. Chad is still a winning QB and can best lead our team at this time. Hopefully with more seasoning Clemens can develop into our QB of the future. The future is not this year.
We don't know anything at the moment how good our o-line is in reality, so maybe we just should take it easy with our predictions. But I do think we will see a lot of play action passes next season.
At least nobody can say, 'Same ol' Jets' after this offseason. Now, I have no idea how all of these moving parts are going to fit together, but I've been a fan since the late 70's and I've never seen an offseason like this before. It's almost like the entire draft is a bonus for this team. In my life I never thought I would feel like this about the Jets...
