Calvin Pace?s Deal A Little Less Astronomical Than Previously Thought If we?ve one thing in the blogging game, it?s that sometimes it?s best to reserve judgement for a few days, let things settle THEN come up with some cogent opinions on the relevant topic. This seems to be one of those cases. For all the bluster and panning the national reporters and insiders have been focused on the Jets giving Calvin Pace $20 million guaranteed ? which I?ll admit I too was shocked over and noted the other day ? there?s a large difference between guarantees and guaranteed. According to the intrepid Rich Cimini in the Daily News on his blog, he?s listed out the deals of some of the newer Jets. Take a look at the pretty graph as it breaks it out very well. So Pace?s deal breaks down like this: he?s on the books for $2.83 million in 2008, had $12.5 million guaranteed across six years with a total deal of $42 million. Where?s the missing money? He gets a $9 million roster bonus in ?09. Although I think the Jets are planning on keeping Pace for the long haul, effectively Tannenbaum gets the guy on the roster for this year and creates a balloon payment for 2009. Worst case scenario? Pace is an utter bust, they forego the roster bonus next year and eat the remaining $9-ish million guaranteed. And by the way, $9 million was the exact amount given in ?guarantees? (not guaranteed) to Bryan Thomas at the end of 2006 ? still think he?s making too much money and could be considered expendable if he doesn?t turn it around? Still think the Jets might not consider Gholston with the #6? I?ll write up more from a maco perspective later, but most general NFL reporters are bashing the Jets for these huge contracts, and then not peeking inside the real numbers of the deals. http://www.thejetsblog.com/?p=3626#more-3626
Well, then!. Once again, Tannenbaum is the man! These knee-jerk football geeks better watch out for the cap guru extraaordinare. I mean -- $2.83 million in cap hurt for 08! Really, now...!
So if we cut Pace after 2008, why is the cap hit $9mill? We wouldn't have to pay out his other '09 bonus, right? If someone can elaborate, I'd appreciate it. I'm no Tanny.
Based on draft picks and the NFL determines an amount a team needs to allocate for the draft picks. It's know as the rookie pool.
OR: maybe he turns out to be good, but we only wanted him as insurance for Gholston and Gholston's so good that we cut Pace anyway (because of course Bryan Thomas had the stellar year we've come to expect from him)
But the money these FA cost the cap is offset by the Cap relief the NYJ gets from the players they release and/or trade before the draft. So we are in pretty good shape for the draft.
I'll call myself an idiot right now to save you guys the time, but.......... I think Thomas is going to have an out standing year this year, He better or he's gone
