From Jetscentral.com... Thursday, March 06th 2008, 5:02 pm by Gary Grund Tom Rock of Newsday notes that the Jets recent visits with safety Eugene Wilson and running back Jesse Chatman went well. Chatman appears closest to becoming a Jet however. Chatman?s agent Brett Tessler? ?We?re kicking some numbers around.? Wilson appears to have liked what the Jets have planned for their defense and like that it is similar to what he played in New England. His agent stated that they are in no rush to make a decision. =================================== I think Chatman is going to be a third-down/goal line specialist on the Jets. Wilson would have a good shot at starting. Thoughts/Comments?
What is the fascination with Chatman? I don't get it. I am a diehard Jets fan in Miami (I read the paper down here) and he isn't that good. I don't get it. If you could get McFadden (maybe), why would you sign this guy (unless you cut him later). I don't get it. Why don't you go for DJ Hackett (cheap)? WAKE UP AND GET SOME RECEIVERS DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i see jesse chatman as rb depth and that is all.. tj/leon is our 1-2 punch and we're obviously looking for a full time backup rb. hopefully he comes cheap.. i dont really like anything about him, but a long as hes just a backup hes fine with me. signing him should all but dismiss the mcfadden talk. wilson on the other hand would be a great addition to the secondary... revis rhodes and wilson is a ridiculous start to having a completely dominant secondary.
I liked what I saw from Elam last season and I like the fact that Elam is only 27 and could get better- Is Wilson even an upgrade over Elam? If Wilsons isnt a clear upgrade, why dont we worry about upgrading cornberback, ILB and DE?
In Chatman's career he has averaged 3.8 yards per carry, but keep in mind his first two seasons with San Diego, he was relatively inactive. Take away those first two seasons of bench warming and he averages 5.0 yards per carry on about 900 yards. In his four year career, he's fumbled once. Last year which was his breakout year once Ronnie Brown went down with injury, he rushed 128 times for 515 yards. So, as a backup, if he can continue his 5.0 average and pull in a few hundred yards as a 3rd down back/goal line back, I'll be more than happy. I do agree he's being brought in for depth, but I think he'll contribute. I do however, think that this will have no bearing on whether or not we bring in DMC.
He would be the backup to McFadden so they could trade Jones. (If that's even possible. We all know the Jets track record on trading anybody)
Now, Averagejoe, you have to take a look at how Chatman runs the ball. Understand, first of all that BS is very familiar with Chatman from their time together at San Diego. Then you need to take a look at some of those "meaningless" games that the Dolph's played this yeara when Chatman took to running over people and by people and he just kept going in spite of people, when it was dry, in the rain, whatever. Now nobody would accuse the Dolph's OL of knowing how to block, but Chatman showed up each time he was asked. I know you don't think he has Kiper like stats. And I know he doesn't "FLASH" for you. But at the same time, it is a good thing to take into account the punishment he puts on the tackler. This punishment is unwanted, and it makes the tackler markedly unhappy. I think this is a good thing. Furthermore, as another nefarious weapon to punish the defense as our new OL is softening them up, Mr. Chatman looks like a by-god bargain.
...but if we sign Chatman, we won't have to use that 4th rounder on a running back. We can use it for a position that needs depth: OL, ILB, WR, or DB
Chatman wouldn't be a lock to make the team if he is brought in. He could be beat out by a draft pick IMO...
No doubt about it. Possible future starting RB's in the 4th round this year. Kevin Smith? Steve Slaton? Jamaal Charles?
All these visits with Chatman should end the crazy McFadden talk, not a chance we take him. None what so ever.
Are you guys blind? If we sign Chatman we are not drafting a RB. Chatman sures up our running game (if we sign him we will have 3 RBs). We have numerous other holes and thats where our draft picks will go.
Signing Chatman would have zero impact when it comes to who we pick in the draft. This FO is putting themselves in the position where they can take the BPA without having to fll a specific need. If they feel McFadden is the BPA, like I would if he was available, signing Jesse Chatman wouldn't stop them from making the pick. Just as if they felt Gholston was the BPA, signing Pace wouldn't have any impact in their decision.
I watched several Fins games this season and agree that Chapman would clearly be behind Jones & Washington...I'm not sure of the appeal for him....
He had a great season with San Diego a few years back and than faded away and was OUT OF THE LEAGUE for a full season and bounced around the NFL until landing in Miami and having a decent season. I expect him to contribute and make the team, but given the talent at RB in the mid-rounds of this draft and the inconsistencies of Chatman throughout his entire career, he is not a lock.
Pay attention to the punishment that Mr. Chatman dishes out. Watch and see the "I'm not going down so live with it!" running attitude that Mr. Chatman regularly sports. Now that's something. Should be fun. And it also should spread the woe amongst the hapless defenses that are sworn to stop him...!
