For all you guys who said, "Woody is a cheapskate."

Do you still feel that way? Just wondering.

  2. I'd like to hear Mike and the mad dog'S response. They lead the charge for this way of thinking despite knowing NOTHING about football or the NFL.

Jim Rome knows nothing either. If he comments he should get punched, he's an idiot.

junc called me out last year and I said we'd wait and see and I wouldn't complain until then. Well, I still haven't complained.

I just remember seeing a lot of annoying "Woody Johnson is a cheapskate" posts on this board and was wondering where some of those guys are now. Champ, care to weigh in?

Does Woody Johnson deserve at least a little credit now for having stepped up to the plate and authorized the release of all this cash? The inference or implication has always been that he "didn't want to win" because he wouldn't spend the money. Now that he has, has that perception changed for some of those that thought that way before?

I'm not asking this rhetorically, I'd seriously like to hear from anyone who felt that way and perhaps has now changed his/her mind.

If the Jets have a winning season next year let me know how much your ticket prices, parking and PSL bill is for the new stadium seats. Woody can't afford to have a bad Jets team when he sends out the PSL's.

That could very well be, Winston, but I have a feeling our tickets would have gone up anyway, so I'm not letting that dampen my enthusiasm for what we've done this week.

Here's an interesting Star Ledger article by Hutch yesterday:

    Money Reshapes Jets' Look

    Tuesday, March 04, 2008
    BY DAVE HUTCHINSON
    Star-Ledger Staff

It took a dizzying free-agency spending spree that totaled an unfathomable $62.75 million in guaranteed money over a four-day span, but the Jets have apparently filled all their major needs and have the look of a playoff contender just two months removed from a disastrous 4-12 finish.

It's perhaps the fastest -- and most expensive -- makeover in club history.

The Jets, who have plugged gaping holes in their offensive and defensive lines and added a pass-rushing linebacker, made two blockbuster signings yesterday landing linebacker Calvin Pace (six years, $42 million, $22 million guaranteed) and right tackle Damien Woody (five years, $25.5 million, $11 million guaranteed).

"I thought it was just a great opportunity for the organization," said Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum in a conference call last night. "We did a lot of planning. We had tremendous support and input from (owner) Woody (Johnson).

"We're excited about what we accomplished. It was a very methodical process. It was competitive with some of the players. We feel really good about where we are relative to our cap. We feel we have some guys who'll be here for a number of years.

"I think spending in the NFL is a little cyclical and we had the opportunity to improve our team and we tried to take advantage of that opportunity."

The only downer was when a deal to send nose tackle Dewayne Robertson to the Bengals for a fourth- and a fifth-round pick fell through after Robertson, who passed his physical in Cincinnati, couldn't agree on a reworked contract. He's scheduled to earn a $9.8 million base salary next season and it could make for an awkward situation when -- and if -- he's still a Jet as the team reports for offseason workouts on March 17.

"Obviously, we were close (to trading him)," Tannenbaum said. "We'll see how it goes."

The bold moves by the Jets seemed to solidify somewhat a roster that still lacks a game-breaking offensive talent and a clear-cut starter at quarterback where veteran Chad Pennington and second-year player Kellen Clemens both saw time last season.

Drafting Arkansas running back Darren McFadden -- if he's available when the Jets pick sixth overall -- could be that electrifying weapon the Jets need. Adding that the team is still committed to building through the draft despite the recent spending spree, Tannenbaum said the club is in the middle of its pre-draft preparation.

The Jets began reshaping their roster on Friday, acquiring massive defensive tackle Kris Jenkins (five years, $30.25 million, $8.75 million guaranteed) from Carolina for a third- and a fifth-round pick. Concerned with his weight and work ethic, the Jets loaded the contract -- which includes far less guaranteed money than originally thought -- with workout and weight clauses. The club can get out of the deal after one season without blowing up its salary cap.

On Saturday, the team agreed to terms with seven-time Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca (five years, $40 million, $21 million guaranteed). Faneca chose the Jets despite coach Eric Mangini's reputation for running a tight ship.

"If anything, it swayed me to (the Jets)," said Faneca in a conference call. "I'm not the kind of guy that's going to make a decision to run from a difficult situation. If anything, I know the work ethic was in place to go win games."

The Jets also traded middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma to the Saints on Friday for a fourth-round pick in 2008 and a conditional pick in 2009 that could be as high as a second-rounder.

In trading Vilma and trying to deal Robertson, the Jets finally admitted that neither player fit their 3-4 scheme. In the end, Mangini picked his system over his players.

Pace, 6-foot-5, 270 pounds, is a former first-round pick in 2003 who had a breakout year last season with 98 tackles and 6 1/2 sacks while playing in a 3-4 scheme for the first time in his NFL career. He has started for just 1 1/2 seasons and has only 38 starts in five years.

The Jets outbid the Dolphins -- and Tannenbaum's former mentor, Bill Parcells -- for Pace. Johnson, the Jets owner, spoke to Pace on the phone and made his private helicopter available to give Pace a tour of New York City and the Jets new training facility in Florham Park.

Tannenbaum insists the Jets have seen enough of Pace to determine he's the real deal as an all-important edge pass rusher in the 3-4 scheme. Of course, the Jets signed Bryan Thomas to a long-term deal last season expecting him to fill that role and he bombed.

The Jets expect Woody, a former Pro Bowl center, to step in and start at right tackle, where he will replace Anthony Clement. Woody, who spent his career at center and guard, started the final five games of last season at right tackle for Detroit and played well.

Notes: The Jets are scheduled to visit with S Eugene Wilson (Patriots) today and RB Jesse Chatman (Dolphins) tomorrow.

    YES.
1 year of spending does not even come close to the years this cheap ass dude has kept his wallet closed.
How many JETS were turned away from their money and how many Young JETS players were shown the door when it was contract time.

Funny thing, It's still happening even with all the spending. Don't be so blind people.

Funny thing is that on this board there are so many people who say Woody has nothing to do with spending.

That quote right there proved my point. Thank You

If your point is that Woody was once "cheap," I might buy into that, but if your point is that Woody is still "cheap," that dog don't hunt. Nor does it fly that Woody is personally not interested in the franchise and in acquiring good talent:

"Johnson, the Jets owner, spoke to Pace on the phone and made his private helicopter available to give Pace a tour of New York City and the Jets new training facility in Florham Park."

So you mean to tell me that getting rid of players because the have contracts coming up and refusing to pay current players doesn't count now because he FINALLY spent a few bux?

C'mon. You guys can't be that naive can you? I mean try and look beyond the signings and look at the big picture. Maybe we'll just have to wait and see how the rest of the team gets "handled" before we can retire or shine the "Cheap" stigma.

People forget the money you spend when it doesn't work. The popular belief is that Leon Hess didn't care until he went and got Parcells, but that wasn't the case. His GM got ill, he stepped in himself and dumped Carroll for Kotite, then the next year he laid out $25 for Neil O'Donnell fresh off a Super Bowl and Jumbo Elliott at LT for another huge contract. Only after all that bombed, then he got Parcells and the team got good did Hess get any credit.
